Bryvin

She sighed. It had been two months already, and still nothing had
happened. Leaning against the wall, she looked around her at the
grounds. People were supposed to _come_ to the main Hold. She was
supposed to be meeting lots of potential suitors and so far it had
been almost no one.

Danrina frowned and leaned over the wall. She gazed at the land around
her. Two months, gone. She still had 11 more, but then what would she
do? She _didn't_ want to return to her parents' small hold and deal
with the consequences.

**Perhaps I should start planning for those circumstances, just in
case,** she mused as she watched the workers, looking so tiny in the
distance, as they moved about.

Bryvin had been inspecting the Citrus groves that morning and the sun
was well up when he'd walked back up the hill to the main Hold.
Captain his faithful canine companion trotted beside him. After a
quick change he went out to the yard to toss a ball for Captain to
chase. Unfortunately one of his tosses was a little farther than he
intended. "Heads up," he shouted toward the wall where a woman stood
looking at the scenery.

Danrina turned at the sound and managed to get her hands up just in
time to catch the ball before it smacked her in the face. She frowned.
Her eyes sought out the person who had thrown the ball.

"Yours?" She inquired when she caught sight of the Steward with a canine nearby.

"Yes," he smiled as Captain eagerly crossed to where she stood with
his ball. He sat in front of her expectantly, tail thumping, with that
perpetual canine smile. "Well, toss it." he called.

She'd been rather annoyed to be smacked by the ball, but the canine's
eagerness brought a smile to her lips.

"You want it boy?" She asked, leaning over the wall dangling the ball.
Then with a toss, she threw it and called out, "Go get it!"

Bryvin shaded his eyes and looked up. "Good arm," he laughed as
Captain took off after the ball as fast as his long legs could carry
him. Soon the big retriever was trotting back to Bryvin with the ball
in his mouth.

She gave a slight snort of amusement at both his praise and the
canine's antics.

Captain barked to get Brivin's attention so he turned away from the
young woman and tossed the ball again. She was a prickly little thing.
No wonder she was having difficulty in achieving her objective. He
half smiled to himself and trotted up the steps to the terrace where
she stood.

"Good afternoon Danrina," he said.

"Good afternnon Bryvin," she responded, "I didn't know you had a
canine." She hadn't seen him with the animal before. She'd never had
any pets of her own growing up. Her parents hadn't liked the idea of
animals as pets. She's always wanted a canine or feline companion.
Perhaps then she wouldn't have felt so lonely at times.

"Ah yes, Captain has been my companion for many turns. He is quite
friendly." The black animal sat patiently at Bryvin's side, ball in
mouth and the kind of smile only canine's can give.

She looked at the canine once again, "I've never had any kind of
animal companion. Do you find having him enjoyable? Or is it simply
just more work?"

Bryvin smiled one of his rare real smiles. "Oh yes, there are no
complications with a canine. What you see is what you get." **Unlike
people,** he thought. "He's very enjoyable and loyal."

"It would be nice to have someone without complications in life," she
mused, "I've never had a pet of any sort." She wasn't sure she was up
for such things on her own, but perhaps someday she could adjust to
the idea. She was finding watching Captain amusing, and it was giving
her ideas about having such a companion of her own.

"As a pup he was a bit more work but still..." Bryvin ruffled
Captain's head while the plume of tail wagged his happiness. "It's
well worth it." He smiled into her eyes. He could do worse than this
young woman to wife he thought briefly. But he'd wait to see if she
found any other prospects. He already knew her timeframe and was in no
hurry himself.

"Have a pleasant day Danrina," he nodded and trotted up the steps into
the Hold proper.
