Briata

Briata

After everything had died down and she had informed the rest of the Weyr
about her condition since people were probably speculating already and
it would be obvious soon anyway, Rhosyn asked Briata to come to her weyr
if she would. In a loose white dress, Rhosyn sat in her sitting room, looking
over Records. Her mind went to Briata's own son and she wondered what hers
would be.

Briata arrived. As usual, she had Brigel with her. This time the baby
was strapped to her back. He was awake and looking around but quiet.
The young weaver smiled as she entered the room and closed the door
behind her. "Hello Rhosyn. How are you feeling?"

"Oh here and there, but it'll be fine. It's hot as shells outside so I'm
enjoying the shade in here." She waited for Briata to sit, watching her
bundle carefully as she set down her Record. "Well Briata, you were
right." It sort of made her feel better that Briata only had one child and
so didn't know much more than she did about mothering. "Unlike you, I can't
really raise my child. So of course he or she will be fostered within the
Weyr. And....well when we talked last...so I was sort of hoping maybe you
might."

As usual the Weyrwoman came to the point rather quickly. She liked
having her cups in a row.

Briata's eyes lit up and her hands clasped together. Then she moved
forward and threw her arms around the Weyrwoman's neck. "Of course. I
would love to be your baby's foster mother." Relief flooded through
her. Rhosyn was not going to go /between/. "I'm so glad you're going
to keep the baby!" That had been her biggest worry and she had pondered
talking to the Goldrider about it but was very glad she wouldn't have to.

"Well Reeva says it's too far now to do that." She shrugged, still looking unsure
about the entire pregnancy thing. At least Briata had done it, though.
So there was someone to talk to perhaps. Feeling awkward, she let the young woman hug
her and softly patted her back.

"Well, I'm glad it is. A baby is a life, a precious life." Briata was
adamant about that, even if the rest of the Weyr acted like they didn't
matter just because they were tiny and in the womb. "Have you thought
of names?"

"That's going to depend upon who its father is, I suspect." So she was
avoiding the issue. And besides, it would also depend upon whether or not it was
a son or daughter and that she wouldn't know till the day of.

"Well, if you want help figuring out names, I enjoy that sort of thing."
Briata enjoyed most things about babies. Not _everything_ but then,
who did? "How are you feeling? Do you need anything?"

"Not that I know of yet. Besides clothes." At that she smiled. Of course she
would ask Briata for that. Didn't she always? Rhosyn wasn't about to confess
her fear to the holder girl. That was for her and N'vanik.

"Of course. If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to ask.
I'll do what I can. If you want, I can help you prepare for labor as
well." Briata had been very fortunate to be around babies and pregnant
women, and even help in some births. She'd learned some good techniques.

Her eyes got big and round when Briata mentioned labor. Rhosyn hadn't really
considered that part too much and immediately it made her pull up short. She
was going to have to get with Reeva on that. Something about the
healer's no-nonsense manner made her feel more comfortable.

Briata saw the expression and offered a gentle smile. "You know, I have
learned some techniques that are very effective. I can teach them to
you if you like."

"Maybe someday. Right now I'd honestly just like to umm...get used to the
entire idea of being pregnant and there being a little person in there. I don't
want to think of it coming out just yet." And her screaming for it to
just come out.

Briata nodded. "Please don't hesitate to call on me. I will do what I
can to support you in this." She was just so glad that the goldrider
was going to keep the child and not kill the babe. "And, of course,
clothes will be one of those things."

"I plan to fully exploit my weyrfolk in this point as much as possible,
so don't worry," It would also keep Rhosyn a bit removed from the situation
if she could get others to deal with it for her. It could keep her mind
off of it.

"Ah, but I want to help and I'm going to be the fostermother, so I
insist." Briata couldn't help but feel a little excited. This wouldn't
be a second baby of her own, but there was something nice about knowing
she'd be caring for the baby of a friend.
