N'vanik was on his way to his office when he spotted the young
goldrider. "Hey there."
Meledei stopped in her tracks then turned to smile. "Hey there, long
time no see."
"How are you doing?" He didn't want to pounce on the poor girl, so he
tried to ease into the conversation.
"Doing all right." Meledei grinned broadly. She was doing more than
all right, she was doing very well. Things were going well with
T'nom, she'd managed to get mostly caught up on the records, and
Cyradis had started to let her lead drills on a regular basis. Yep,
it was really good. "How about you?"
"I'm good," he said. Nope, he wasn't good at small talk. "Did Cyradis
talk to you about Elleth's upcoming clutch?"
Meledei shook her head at that. "No. Why?"
"Considering how young the bronze was ... it'll probably be a small
clutch. Cyradis isn't very happy about it." He wasn't, either, but he
wasn't going to blame Meledei.
Meledei stared at N'vanik for a moment, then crossed her hands over
her chest. "Um, N'vanik...age has nothing to do with clutch size.
It's the length of the flight. It's always been the length of the
flight, and that was a decently long flight."
"I think you need to talk to Cyradis. She's planning for the worst,
like what happened at Dragonsfall." He hadn't announced the
restrictions on younger dragons chasing, hoping the clutch would be
better than they expected.
Meledei's mouth dropped open. "Wow." She stated, taken aback. "I've
never been so insulted in all my life. Wow. Just...wow." She raised
her hands. "Fine. You guys think of the worst. Thanks for the vote
of confidence. Now if you'll excuse me, Weyrleader, I do have some
work to attend to."
He held a hand out to stop her. "Hey, Mel. I'm on your side. I just
wanted to warn you."
"Well I'm glad someone is on my side. Thanks for the warning."
Meledei didn't feel that grateful, but she knew N'vanik didn't mean
any harm, even if her emotions were shouting at her.
He nodded. "The eggs aren't even clutched yet, so everything is just
speculation anyway."
"Speculation. And the worst speculation. Even if it _is_ a small
clutch, it will be a _good_ one." Meledei lifted her chin. She
didn't like it when people implied that Elleth was...well, not the
best some how.
"Of course. No matter what we'll have more fine, healthy dragons." He
patted her shoulder.
Meledei relaxed visibly. "Thanks N'vanik. I know it didn't turn out
the way you wanted, but at least you're willing to look on the
positive side and not proclaim doom."
"Trying that optimism thing you're so good at," he said with a smile.
