Reven

"Found out something interesting about your hold." Caenir commented
as he sat next to his friend. He had a sliver of wood which he worked
with his mouth and tongue back and forth. He smiled to the holder and
tipped his hat out of respect for the position the man now held.
"Thought you might be interested."

Reven looked up from his desk, his eyebrows raising as he leaned back
in his chair, "Oh? Go ahead then." He motioned for Caenir to sit, a
smile playing across his lips, wondering what the Stablemaster had
found.

"There was a fire a few turns back." Caenir pulled out the chair and
turned it around then sat down on it backwards. "Burned down the
original stables."

The Holder's eyebrows shot up, "Really? You know, I think I remember
my mother writing something about that in a letter she sent to me
while at Red Rush. Of course, I didn't pay it much attention." Reven
had been far busier chasing skirts and working in the fields to worry
about his Green Valley home.

"Evidently the wife of the holder at the time went in to get the
runners out. Seems he was intending to breed too." Caenir had found
that personally interesting.

Reven leaned forward in his chair, much more interested in the
conversation now. He couldn't imagine letting Arippa go into a flaming
building, even for prized breeding lines. And if she dared to risk her
life in such a way Reven was sure he would turn her over his knee
himself.

"Did the lady make it out? What about the runners?"

"Yes, they did. The runners made it out because of the lady, and she
made it out with minor injuries. Mostly smoke inhalation." Caenir's
mouth quirked. "The Auntie I talked to even mentioned at how upset
the holder was in regards to what his wife did. Evidently their
marriage was arranged and she found it evidence that they had started
to care about one another."

The Minor Holder's eyebrows were nearly in his hairline as he listened
to the story. It was quite a show of bravery on the lady's part,
rushing into the fire to save the runners, "Well, I am glad that she
suffered no lasting harm. I wonder if that fire discouraged the
breeding and selling of runners that they had planned?"

"Actually, no. They had plans to do just that." Caenir shook his
head. "Remember how I said you had some good stock already?
Evidently they are a legacy from him. Unfortunately, he and the wife
died of an illness, which is when more upheaval started for the hold."

Reven found this an interesting turn of events, and wondered why he
had never bothered to take notice of the history of the Hold. Probably
because all of his interest had been in farming at Red Rush. He had
never considered that becoming the Holder of Green Valley was even a
possibility for himself.

"Good discovery, Caenir, at least we know that we have some good
foundations to start building from. I want the words 'prized runner'
to become synonymous with Green Valley." There was good money in the
buying and selling of runner flesh, and Reven would capitalize on that
if able.

"With what you have already and what I've been looking at, I can see
that as a definite possibility." Caenir had gotten to take a good
look at the runners and he'd been on the look out for others when he'd
gone to Emerald Falls. "I actually have some purchases that will need
your approval. Two mares. There's a nice stallion here already -
evidently he was the holder's personal runner. I think he'll make for
good racing runner stock."

There weren't a lot of extra funds floating around Green Valley,
especially with the lack of management around the time that Namiren
had taken over and then died. Such poor handling had allowed the minor
hold to fall behind, and only now were they beginning to make progress
forward. Still, the two mares would be an investment that the hold
needed in order to make profits in the future.

"I trust your eye on that. Go ahead and buy them."

"Thank you. I'll do my best to haggle the price lower." Caenir's
face split into a grin. He wasn't bad at doing just that,
particularly with runners. "I'll head to Emerald Falls tomorrow."
