Cyradis

Cyradis

Meledei stepped before her Weyrwoman and smiled. She had finally
gathered up the courage, but she honestly wasn't sure what Cyradis
would think. She hoped she got a positive reaction, but she told
herself that she needed to be prepared for whatever answer was given
and to trust that Cyradis who was wiser and more experienced would
know what was best. Still, she'd not know if she didn't ask and the
worse that could be said was 'no'. "Hey Cyradis, mind if we talk for
a moment?"

"Of course," Cyradis smiled at the younger goldrider. "Is there
something I can help you with?" She picked up her cup of tea and took
a sip.

"I have a proposition." Meledei paused and then rephrased.
"Well...actually, more like a request."

"Okay," she said with a puzzled expression.

"Well, I know you've been giving me more responsibility, and I
appreciate it." Meledei moved over to take a seat. "But I was
wondering if maybe I could have more responsibility on a more regular
basis."

Cyradis sat back in her chair and looked at Meledei for a long moment.

"And just what kind of responsibility is it that you want?" She knew
the girl had to have put some thought into it before she came to talk
to her so this was her opening to make her case.

"Well, I know you've let me lead the drills on occasion." Meledei had
enjoyed it far more than she thought and she had done better than she
thought. Of course, it had helped that Cyradis had confidence in her.
"I was wondering if I could do it on more of a regular basis."

The corner of Cyradis' mouth quirked up. That was the kind of ambition
she liked to see in a young goldrider. "I think that's an excellent
idea," she nodded.

"Really?" Meledei had wondered if Cyradis would care for the idea.
After all, she knew she was still really young, but Meledei also knew
that doing things like that were necessary if she was going to get
good experience. "Would once a sevenday be all right?"

Cyradis knew the value of the younger goldrider's ambition and
appreciated the courage it had taken for her to ask but she also
couldn't allow that much training time to be taken up with would would
amount to training the younger woman rather than drilling her wing.
The Queen's wing was less stressful than the higher wings as they flew
more of a vigilant role but many of their riders were older or
injured and hoping to get back into the other fighting wings. They
needed the time to drill and an experienced eye watching for every
nuance to ensure they didn't end up in her wing again.

"How about every other sevenday?"

Meledei knew she'd been aiming high and that she'd probably have to
compromise, so she didn't argue with the Weyrwoman. "Sounds fair."
Her smile grew. "Thanks for the opportunity."

Cyradis nodded. "You're really working hard Meledei and it shows. Keep
it up," she smiled.

"Thanks Cyradis. I appreciate that." It was nice to have that
acknowledged. Traelyn never had. Of course, Cyradis was definitely not
Traelyn. Thank Faranth for that.
