K'sedel

The clutch had been hardening and the candidates had even been to
touch the eggs under the Weyrlingmaster's supervision. Everyone in the Weyr
felt the anticipation grow and the Weyrwoman was quite ready to be flying
again so she hoped the eggs would hatch soon.

Sitting in the weyr she had moved into, Rhosyn was chewing on some herdbeast
jerky while she went through all the requests from her Headwoman. The chair
here was more comfortable than the one in her office. She could also
hear Orlaith sleeping out on the Sands. As she moved a hide, she noticed
that the low noise she made while sleeping had stopped. Orlaith was awake.
And she was moving. And she was humming. **Eggs!**

And Rhosyn was hurrying to get into her clothes which didn't fit and cursing
as she did so. "Faranth!"

K'sedel couldn't miss the humming, well no resident of the Weyr old enough
to understand could fail to notice the buzz it generated, even as he quickly
dismissed his wing to their pre-Hatching duties, and headed back to change.
It took him a few moments, before he quickly knocked on Rhosyn's door.

She was struggling and hearing the knock, she gave up. She couldn't miss her
own Hatching! "Who is it?"

"K'sedel," he called. "Anything you need me to do before we go in?"

"Yes, help me get into this stupid dress!" She was cursing and overheated
due to her struggles. And that wouldn't do. When Rhosyn got hot, she sweated
and then she smelled.

K'sedel entered the room, "Let me see." Initially he thought that perhaps it
was that she couldn't reach the fastenings.

Briata had let the dress out already. Still it seemed it was going to be a bit
snug. Rhosyn couldn't get herself into it no matter what she did. She didn't
want to wear one of those pull-you-in things. Standing there, helpless,
she waited for K'sedel to do something about it, half naked.

"Okay," he said gentlemanly averting his gaze. "Is there a button
you can't reach?"

"No, I just can't get it shut. Some pulling and tugging is in order I think."
Deep into denial, she refused to look at her body and the changes that had
been wrought.

"Perhaps another dress?" Time was of the essence, and the humming seemed to
be taking on a note of greater urgency.

"This is the one Briata let out. The others..." The annoyance in her voice
was changing to anger, and slowly to despair. She was going to miss her own
Hatching. Looking down, she tried not to cry. "Just please pull it tight.
I know that'll work."

"If you're sure," the Weyrleader said as he came closer.

After the many sevendays of being angry at K'sedel after what he'd told N'vanik,
Rhosyn found herself trusting him, at least, to do this. He would take care
of it she knew. After some effort, she was dressed. Taking a few moments to
get her shoes on and check her hair, she grabbed his arm and hurried to the Sands.

Safely in her usual seat before any of the eggs started to rock hard, Rhosyn
watched as Orlaith settled herself back behind the careful egg rows, watching and
humming with the others as her eyes whirled a happy blue.

"There," K'sedel said softly, pointing to one of the larger eggs. "See the
crack there?"

"Aye, I wonder....did I see a flash of brown?" She moved forward in her
seat, her chest heaving as it was jailed inside the dress. Her eyes followed
the white-robed candidates as they stood on the Sands, waiting to see if they
would leave with a dragon. Some of them she knew rather well.

The humming continued and then some of the eggs were moving. Rhosyn's eyes
traveled, trying to see them. She felt Orlaith doing the same thing. When it looked
like one would be the first to crack open, she heard noise as another one on
the other side revealed a baby dragonet first. The creature crawled onto the
warm sands and it was clear that it had blue hide. "Ah a boy first. Well
there's another fighting dragon for us."

"And another," an egg at the far side of the sands to where the Weyrleader
was sitting rocked, then cracked, a green foreleg emerged, widening the crack
until the little one could emerge on the sands, calling for her mate. After
a few heart stopping moments, she unwaveringly made her way to boy looking
barely old enough to be on the sands. Sudden maturity spread over his face
though as he realized what had happened.

Seeing the Impressions occur, Rhosyn thought about that day, long ago, when
her life had changed forever. Warm feelings came from Orlaith, even as the
queen saw more and more of the Sands covered by her children. Smiling to
herself, her eyes fell on Bedjon. Would the Holder boy Impress? Her question was
answered when a little green crawled across the Sand creeling for him. "Ahh..."

Several other Impressions began to happen then as the eggs emptied their
occupants out onto the Sands. It was a happy moment whenever a dragonet found their
lifemate and Rhosyn heard a collective sigh from the folks in the Stands when a
little bronze came up against a white-robed young person.

Then, another one-she thought he was called Natur-was shouting out.
"Graileth, he is Graileth!" The brown near him seemed to be happy so Rhosyn
didn't stop to think about that.

Orlaith ushered her little ones toward the waiting candidates, though with
such a large clutch it did take some time. The gold continued to hum, eyes whirling while the
rest of the Weyr and its guests looked on. Some of the crafters walked off the Sands to feed
their dragonets. Then there were holder children. One of them, a female, wasn't
quite a child. And yet, Ameala had found herself a green. "Look,
K'sedel...Ingoth that one is." Rhosyn hoped things would go well for her.

All in all, the Hatching went well and Rhosyn found herself content when all
was said and done and all the eggs had Hatched out and the dragonets had found themselves in
the care of their riders and the Weyrlingmaster. Standing up, she brushed herself off and
grabbed K'sedel to get to the feast. She was starving.
