Briata

"Briata, can you do a little sewing for me?" Her tone was a bit more
needling than usual. The truth was, Rhosyn was getting fat and she
didn't like it. Since she had been sick and laid up and now grounded-the
Weyrwoman hadn't been exercising so much. And she was slightly disgusted
by it. Still, she couldn?t get rid of it in time for the Hatching and
something needed to be done.

"I'm sure I could spare some time." Briata motioned for the Weyrwoman
to enter the quarters she shared with Y'gel and Brigel. The child was
snug in a wrap that wound itself around his mother which kept him close
to her heart. He was asleep and blissfully unaware that anyone had come
to pay a visit. "What do you need?"

"Well I need one of my dresses let out so it'll be suitable for the
Hatching. Just a bit...here"-she pointed to her chest-"And here".
Gesturing towards her lower abdomen, she frowned. "All this being
sick and then being grounded has just not let me run around like I usually
do."

Briata eyed the Weyrwoman. Surely she wasn't that naive? Was
she? "Rhosyn...are you sure it's simply lack of movement that is causing
this?"

"Of course. It's just a few extra bits here and there. Not a problem and as
soon as I get back to flying-I'll get rid of it." Her eyes almost dared
Briata to say she was eating too much.

"No, Rhosyn, I don't think you understand." Briata stepped forward to
take the Weyrwoman's hands in hers. "Rhosyn, when was the last time you
had your flow?"

"My what?" Rhosyn looked up at Briata and stepped back.

"Rhosyn, I could be wrong, but it sounds like you might be
pregnant." Briata just put it out there since obviously the goldrider didn't
quite get the meaning of the question.

"Psh..Briata, all I need is a dress that fits. I've been eating and I
haven't been able to get around while I was ill and now Orlaith's eggs
and...I haven't even been swimming really. So, can you do that for me?" It was
almost as if she had ignored the mention of pregnancy entirely.

Briata honestly didn't think that was the case, but if Rhosyn wanted to
ignore the signs, she wasn't one to press. She was, however, going to
pay a bit closer attention to the Weyrwoman. Hopefully she'd realize
what was going on sooner rather than later. "All right, let's take a
look at the dress and get some measurements."

Rhosyn pulled the frock from her shoulder and laid it out. It was more
simple than some of her other Hatching garments, but it was comfortable
and that counted for a lot.

"I like this." Briata fingered the garment, then unlaced it. "Let's
try it on and see how it looks and that will help me determine how much
we need to change."

With a lot of pushing and pulling, Rhosyn made it clear that as it was
she wasn't getting into the dress. Frustrated and more than a little
annoyed at being subjected to this when she clearly said the dress was
too small, she stood there still and quiet.

"Okay, let me see this." Briata pulled off the dress and examined the
stitches. "To be honest, I'm not sure I can let this out enough and
retain the integrity of the seams." She held up the dress and eyed it.
"It's a very simple design. I can have a new, larger one made for
you in a day. Do you want to go that route?"

She huffed just slightly. The whole point of this had been to keep from
getting a new dress. Rhosyn didn't really need a new dress-she had a few
already. But it was clear this was not going to fit really, at least not
in time. "Fine."

"It will be all right." Briata assured her. "Let me keep this so I can
use it as a pattern."
