F?dom strode quickly across the cavern floor, glancing wildly around
for any sign of Y?gel. Uiranth settled wearily on her haunches and
closed her eyes. F?dom felt a new burst of panic at the sight.
Something was wrong with his beautiful, loving, caring green lifemate,
and he was desperate for help.
}:I am fine, my rider. Just tired. :{ As usual, Uiranth could not
stand to see her partner worry. She opened her eyes and made a
comforting rumble from deep in her chest.
?I want the Dragonhealer to look at you anyways. You?ve been tired so
often lately; something is not right, and I know you?re brave, but I?m
not. I won?t let any harm come to you if I can help it.? F?dom
stubbornly refused to be comforted by his dragon?s words; it wouldn?t
be the first time she had played down a crisis for his benefit.
Striding to the door at the back of the infirmary, F?dom wretched it
open. It was the Dragonhealer?s office; if he was here, this is where
F?dom would find him.
"Yes?" Y'gel looked up from the hides he was working on when F'dom
came barreling through the door. "Whats wrong son?"
"Y'gel, it's Uiranth. She's sleeping all the time, and her appetite is
practically non-existent! She insists that nothing is wrong, but I
don't believe her. I can feel her fatigue."
He grimaced accusingly at his beautiful green, but he was not angry--
only fearful. F'dom knew he had a habit of overreacting in emotional
situations, but this time he was justified! By the Egg, if a man
couldn't get worked up over his dragon's health, what could he react
to?
He turned back to Y'gel. "Help her, Healer. Please."
"Alright," he said. "Let's see what's going on shall we?" He smiled at
the obviously concerned young rider as he got up from behind the desk
and bustled out into the large dragonhealer cavern. "Hello there
beautiful," said as he approached the young green.
Uiranth waited dutifully for Y'gel to reach her, eyes whirling a
calm blue. She crooned in greeting. }:I am glad to visit Aughashyth's
rider. Even if it is unnecessary.{ Uiranth, it seemed, had a deep
abiding affection for healers; perhaps it was in response to last
Turn's cold season, when they had spent several weeks in recovery
after the little green had caught a large clump of Thread across her
left haunch. Or perhaps she just liked this Healer in particular...
after all, Aughashyth was many a green's favorite, and he had given
chase in more than one of Uiranth's flights. Her eyes closed once
more, contentedly, if somewhat wearily.
F'dom paced nervously a few steps behind Y'gel. He snorted at his
lifemate's comment. "Ever the flirt. She says she's glad to see you."
F'dom reached her head and began lovingly scratching her eyeridges.
His addressed Y'gel again, still anxious but decidedly more in control
of himself now that he knew the healer was here. "What's wrong with
her?"
Y'gel smiled at the green's greeting. He was alway happy to attend to
one of the Weyr's prettiest greens. Or maybe that was just Aug's
feelings rubbing off on him. He could understand the young man's
concern over his life mate and chuckled. "Give me a moment," and ran
his hands over the green hide to see if he could find any hidden
injuries or evidence of any other issues. As his experienced hands ran
over the hide he didn't find anything obvious until he reached her
tail. "Hmmm," me mused.? "Well, it looks like perhaps she's
constipated." He knew that didn't sound like much but it could mean
quite an uncomfortable and listless dragon.
"We'll need to give her a purge."
**I told you** he told the green accusingly. **I knew there was
something wrong.**
He nodded to the healer. "What do you need me to do?"
"Well first," he put his hand on the young man's shoulder and looked
directly into his eyes. "I know they taught you this in weyrling
training but you must not let her over eat. That's usually what causes
this." He said it in a very mild tone as it was a common mistake for
young riders and it certainly wasn't intentional. "So we'll give her
and herbal purge and in a few days she'll be just fine." Y'gel went to
one of his cupboards to pull down a large tub and a mix of herbs and
brought it to the green then dumped in a rather large amount of water.
"Get her to drink that."
Uiranth sniffed the mixture and snorted disdainfully. }:That is not
for drinking. It smells like the liquid you use to clean your riding
leathers:{ she complained.
**My heart, the dragonhealer says you must if you are to be healthy
again. I cannot stand to see you sick like this.** He hung his head
and tears sprang to his eyes. **I'm sorry that I let you overeat. It's
all my fault.**
Uiranth crooned comfort. }:No, my rider, do not be upset. Here, look,
I will drink.:{ To prove her sincerity, she hastily emptied the tub.
F'dom felt her displeasure for its taste through the mental connection
they shared, but she voiced no more complaints. }:Better?:{ She asked
anxiously.
F'dom beamed. "That's my girl!" He placed his arms around her neck and
cradled her large head against his chest. His eyes were still shining
as he addressed Y'gel.
"Thank you, Y'gel. I promise, I won't let this happen again. I will
take better care of her." He scratched her eyeridge lovingly. "We will
take better care of each other."
Y'gel just nodded and smiled. He hoped the lesson would serve to make
the rider take more control of his green and not let her walk all over
him when she wanted something.
"See that you do."
