Description: The Weyrlingmaster meets with candidate Bedjon
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 1, day 19 of Turn 7
H'vack had met with almost all the candidates now. He only had one or
two left. He'd called in a boy, Bedjon, to meet with him next. As he
waited for him to arrive, he finished up some of his paperwork from
earlier in the day. The eggs were hardening. Time was fast approaching
that the Hatching would begin and his TRUE work would start.
"Sir, you asked to see me?" Bedjon peeked in from the door.
"Ah, yes, Bedjon. Sit." H'vack motioned to the chair and waited for
the boy to take the seat. He didn't wait long before he pressed.
"So tell me how you ended up a candidate here at the Weyr?"
"I was Searched. My dad thought it was best for me to accept the
Search and go to Weyr immediately," Bedjon replied with all honesty.
H'vack nodded. "Wise father. So, what were you studying at the time
you were Searched?"
"Nothing. I was working at our farm. My main duty was tending the
animals, herdbeasts and draft-runners," Bedjon replied.
"I see," H'vack replied, "while you are here, you may want to choose a
craft to work on, especially if you don't Impress straight away. With
your experience beast-crafting sounds like a field you might like to
pursue further." H'vack liked to make sure the young riders were well
rounded and he knew from experience that it was good to have a craft
to fall back on if one didn't Impress. Though, even without a craft,
there was always plenty of work to be done in the Weyr due to the
Threadfall.
"Obviously the dragons choose us, but have you considered what your
own preferences might be?" This too was important and often told much
about the young candidates.
"I'm pretty sure where my preferences are," Bedjon said, his eyes
twinking with amusement.
His thoughts however were stuck on what the Weyrlingmaster had said
about the craft. "You think I could still become a beastcrafter
apprentice? They don't think me too old for it?"
He noted the boy had evaded his question regarding preference, though
his answer gave away more than he might have realized. In all his
dealings men who preferred women were eager to state that, but men who
preferred men or both were often more evasive. H'vack eyed the boy and
noted that he would make a good green or blue rider for sure. He was
tall, but very attractive for a male.
"Not too old, not here in the Weyr. No one is ever too old to learn a
worthwhile craft here. Will you advance far? That's hard to say. You
will be older than most apprentices, but that can be to your
advantage. If you don't Impress right away then you can make much
progress before the next hatching. Would you like me to speak to the
beastcrafters for you and have them begin your training?" H'vack knew
as Weyrlingmaster he could arrange for the candidates to receive the
proper schooling and crafting that would help them further their
studies and be useful to the Weyr while they waited for their chance
to Impress.
"Yes, sir, that would be wonderful!" Bedjon replied, eyes shining with
excitement and joy. To him the Weyr was turning out to be a place
where his dreams came true.
"Alright, I'll speak with them straightaway. Best get you working
towards a craft while you are here. However, you cannot shirk your
candidate duties in the meantime and _if_ you Impress, your sole focus
must be on your dragon. Is that clear?" H'vack waited for the boy to
respond.
"Yes, sir, very clear," Bedjon replied promtly.
H'vack nodded. He liked the boy's respect for authority. That would do
him well in the Weyr.
"Alright, do you have any questions for my, Bedjon?"
"I heard we're going to get to see the eggs before the Hatching?"
Bedjon asked with a hopeful tone.
H'vack nodded, "Yes, yes you will. We will see them officially for the
touching. It should take place just shortly before the Hatching, when
we're sure the eggs are hard enough. It's highly encouraged that
everyone participate in that. You will likely be able to see them
sooner if you stop by the Sands, but I wouldn't get close. Oralith
won't like that at all." H'vack knew _no_ gold dragon liked prying
eyes around her eggs, but it was common practice for the weyrfolk to
sneak a peak here and there.
"That sounds great, sir," Bedjon was obviously waiting eagerly for the Hatching.
"Alright," H'vack replied. "Unless there's something else you'd like
to discuss," here he paused and waited. "Otherwise I will see you in
classes."
"I have no questions, sir," Bedjon replied.
