Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 4 of Turn 7

Jeyme had waited a couple of days after Arippa's wedding before
deciding to approach D'hol. She knew that she and the Wingleader were
being watched because of the rumors about them, all if which were
false. Jeyme was interested in D'hol, obviously, but she was neither a
rule breaker nor interested in risking Quinneth's beautiful
development into the lovely creature that she was becoming.
Grabbing a bubbly from the lower caverns, and wrapping it neatly in a
napkin, Jeyme headed to D'hol's office, knocked and then opened the
door.
"D'hol?"
The office was empty but a soft voice behind her sounded shortly after
she opened the door. "Boo."
Jeyme let out an "eep" in surprise as she whirled, the startled
expression on her face melting into a smile.
"D'hol! You nearly have me a heart attack!"
He gave a soft chuckle, true mirth and warmth in his eyes. "That's
what you get for opening my door without me in there." He gestured her
in and followed her, leaving the door pointedly open. He'd heard the
rumors and had already been spoken to by N'vanik. He was half
expecting Cyradis to come blazing into his office to find out just
what he was doing with one of "her" weyrlings, but it had yet to
happen. "Have a seat."
"I even brought you a gift." Jeyme said with a wink as she laid the
wrapped bubbly on D'hol's desk and then seated herself in the chair
across from him. It was rare, the Weyrling thought, to find the
Wingleader in such a lighthearted mood, and she hoped to take
advantage of it.
One brow arched as he looked down at the bubbly and twitched the
napkin to the side. His smile lifted a bit. "I suppose you've
discovered my weakness." He inclined his head and sat, immediately
breaking a piece of crust off and popping into his mouth. "Thank you."
He paused while he chewed and swallowed. "Why the gift?"
"Just a little thank you for taking the letter to Arippa for me."
Jeyme explained, tucking a strand of her short hair behind her ear as
she relaxed in the chair, "And I was hoping for, perhaps, some
information from you about the details of the wedding." She grinned a
little, hoping that the bubbly was enough to bribe some girl-talk out
of the Wingleader.
"A simple thank you would have been fine." D'hol shrugged, but still
took another bite of the bubbly. He glanced up, noted the grin and
leaned back with an arched brow and a mild smirk. "Details..." he
drawled the word out. "I don't know if I'll tell you what I want to
hear. I found the whole matter a bit boring."
Jeyme smiled, her nose wrinkling up a bit, "They can be tedious
sometimes." She agreed. The former holder had been to many weddings in
her short life, shards, she'd spent most of her youth planning her own
wedding day. Crossing one leg over the other, Jeyme idly swung her
foot back and forth, "Did they seem happy?" She had been with Reven
and Arippa before to have seen the natural chemistry that the pair
shared, but chemistry didn't always promise a happy wedding.
"At times? As a rule." D'hol took a bit of a piece of crust and then
frowned. "I find the idea of tying yourself to one person for a
lifetime a bit...." He paused." Stupid. Feelings change, lives
change." He shook his head and then shrugged. "They both seemed very
happy. Smiling. All that bit."
Jeyme was not surprised by D'hol's attitude toward marriage, he was a
bronzerider a Weyr man through and through, "I am glad for them. It is
a lot different for Hold women than weyr women. The only thing you are
allowed to hope for in your future is a secure marriage. Since you are
then stuck with whatever man bid the most for your hand, your only
hope is to try and make the best of the situation and be happy." She
lifted her shoulders in a shrug that said she was glad she had escaped
such a fate.
"I was with Arippa when she first met Reven, at least they already had
interest and chemistry with one another before Lord Corowal arranged
the marriage."
There was a soft snort. "I know it's different; perhaps it has to be
considering the differences." He shrugged. "I suppose you should be
happy for them; the girl is your friend. Perhaps they'll be a rarity
and be happy." But he wouldn't hold his breath. "But chemistry and
interest only go so far. It's great in the beginning, but then you
have to think of the day to day matters." There was a sudden tightness
in his jaw and his face cooled to a remote mask. "Passion, interest
and chemistry don't last."
Jeyme watched D'hol's lighthearted mood fade to a frosty exterior, and
her brow furrowed as she came to a realization, "I take it that you
are speaking from experience?"
D'hol's gaze shifted from remote to utterly icy and his hazel eyes
became hard as granite. The expression was clear; he did not desire to
discuss the matter. " Whatever that experience may be, it won't be
repeated." The underlying message was also as clear: 'Don't get
attached to me'. "I thank you for your bubbly, Jeyme. I'm sure you
have classes to attend."
The green Weyrling chuckled and held her hands up defensively, "Relax,
Wingleader, I was merely going to agree with you and add that a
friendship is a good basis to begin a relationship." Jeyme stood and
walked to the door, "And just so you know I wasn't intentionally
prying for information. Thanks for delivering my letter, D'hol, I owe
you." With a wink Jeyme slipped from the man's office, she _did_ have
classes to attend.
At that, D'hol's shoulders did relax. Her grin surprised him; she'd
not been cowed in the slightest. One brow arched as she slipped out of
his office door and he leaned back in his chair to stare at the door
for a long while. The girl was irrepressible. Interesting.
