Tamajan had promised himself that he would be outgoing at the Weyr. It had been an easy promise to make at the time, because he hadn't been faced with a room full of strangers. Many of them seemed to know each other well, but Tamajan took some comfort in the fact that he wasn't the _only_ boy who looked a little uncomfortable. As he made his way to his bed, he did his best to look confident and friendly.
Of course, his feet betrayed him. He'd spent the last turn tripping over things that weren't even there, and now was no exception. His confident walk turned into a stumble, and he ended up sprawled on the floor in front of the bed next to his, looking up at his new bunkmate.
Mortified, Tamajan's embarassment only deepened when he realized that there was a girl sitting next to the first candidate, doing her best to hide laughter as she looked at Tamajan's sprawled form. "Rialt, I think your new bunkmate is here..."
"Well, well... Tamajan, is it?" Rialt drawled with a friendly grin, standing to help the younger youth up, taking great care not to laugh at him. "I'm Rialt. And the girl who's trying her best to look solemn is Isaline."
Isaline let out a snort of laughter as Tamajan made it to his feet. The new candidate looked from Isaline to Rialt and back, feeling a little unsettled.
"I... I thought this was the boy's barracks. D-do we all sleep in the same room?"
"Huh? Oh, yes and no. We're seperated by a curtain, as you can see." Rialt gestured towards the middle of the large room. "But Isaline usually counts as one of the boys, don't you, Is?" He grinned and gave her a teasing wink, knowing he was going to pay dearly for that.
Tamajan didn't think Isaline looked much like a boy, but the scowl she got on her face made her a little less pretty. "It's nice to meet you, Isaline,"
he said cautiously, turning his attention quickly back to Rialt.
"And you, too, Rialt. Have you been here long?"
"All my life," he grinned. "And Isaline too. Where'd you come in from?"
"Topaz Seahold," Tamajan replied, perching on the edge of his bed. "I was an apprentice in the Seacraft Hall."
"From Topaz, huh? How's the rebuilding going over there?"
"Slow," Tamajan admitted. He peeked at Isaline out of the corner of his eye again, blushing when she grinned at him.
For her part, Isaline was thrilled at the affect she was having on the new candidate. "I think there's a weyrling from the Seacraft Hall. You should see if you can find him. Didn't he Impress in the last Hatching?" The last sentence was directed at Rialt, and Isaline gave him a nudge with her foot.
"Yeah... Yeah. His name was D'ral, or D'cal... Something like that. You know, I'm pretty sure it was D'cal."
Tamajan shook his head. "I'm not sure... I might know him, though."
"Well, you'll have to ask around!" Rialt grinned suddenly as he looked over at Isaline. "Hey, Tamajan... I know you're a seacrafter and all, but do you know how to ride runners?"
"Well... I've done it a couple times..." He looked at Rialt curiously. "Do you do that a lot? Ride runners, I mean."
"It's what I do! I'm a beastcrafter, and so is Isaline. We both have runners...you should come out with us sometime."
"Don't worry," Isaline reassured Tamajan when he looked nervous. "Rialt thinks he's such a great rider, but he's horrible. I'll teach you how it's done, though."
"Yes," Rialt nodded slowly. "She rides like just like a lad does, so I'm pretty sure she could be the best to teach you." He swung his feet off the floor and onto the bed before she could kick them. "Not counting me, that is," he grinned in an afterthought.
It was Isaline's turn to flush, and the glare she turned on Rialt would have terrified Tamajan. "Oh, you're _so_ funny, Rialt. How do you handle yourself?"
"It's the great question of the Pass, sweet. I'll let you know when I've figured out the answer."
Tamajan jumped back into the conversation, hoping to smooth over things.
"I'd like to go riding sometime, if you want to."
"Sure, we'll take you! It's great fun, riding along the shore. You'll see!" Rialt smiled at Tamajan, then winked at Isaline. Things could definitely get interesting.
Isaline pointedly ignored Rialt and graced Tamajan with a _very_ friendly smile. "It will be nice to have someone else along with us." Bouncing up off of Rialt's bed, Isaline leaned down to give Tamajan a light kiss on the cheek. "It was nice to meet you, Tamajan." With that, she swept off in the direction of the curtain that lead to the girl's barracks.
Tamajan was bright red and looked highly startled. "Uhhm, that doesn't happen a lot, does it? Because that didn't happen a lot at home..."
Rialt grinned. "Tamajan, my friend, welcome to the Weyr."
