Zathris

Benani slowly awoke from a deep sleep with a smiled. She moved her
feet carefully to keep from waking Zathris if possible. Then she
realized. They'd slept through the night, both boys had slept the
whole night without a single peep.

It was quiet, even more so by the fact that not only had the boys
slept through the night, but Zathris wasn't there. He had certainly
been there when Benani had gone to bed the night before, and his place
looked as if it had been slept in, but he had risen some time before
the Lady and managed not to awaken her.

She turned and stretched as the morning light streamed through the
window. It was then she realized the bed was empty and she sat up
looking around. "Zathris?"

There was no answer, but before Benani had time to call again, the
door opened and through it walked her husband laden with a tray. He
grinned as he saw her and closed the door behind him. "There you are.
I made sure they made up your favorite breakfast." He crossed over
and placed the tray on her lap before giving her a kiss. "And enough
for two."

"Oh Zathris!" Benani grinned and straightened the covers for him to
put the tray down. There was her favorite omelette and the tiny
sausages. "This is lovely."

"It's a special day. I can't not do anything all day, but I did keep
my schedule clear so we can eat breakfast together in bed." Zathris
speared one of the sausages with his fork and offered it to his wife.
"The boys are already with their milk mother."

"That's wonderful of you dear." Benani leaned over to bite the sausage. "Mmmm."

"It looks like it's going to be a nice day to day." Zathris took the
rest of that piece of sausage, but there was plenty more where that
came from. "I thought after dinner we could hitch up the runners,
bring along some food and have a picnic."

"Oh that sounds lovely," she smiled, then filled her mouth with a bite
of the hot omelette. Her mind had been worrying over some of the news
of the hold that had finally reached her. She knew her husband wrapped
her in wool at times to keep the more distressing things at bay. But
she could help having her heart got out to those in need. "Have you
checked on Chupsin lately? How is he doing?"

"Yes. And he_says_ he's doing all right." Whether or not that was

the truth was difficult for Zathris to ascertain. "I offered to give
him more time off...but he said he'd rather work. Which I can
understand."

"Yes," she nodded her agreement. She'd felt the same way when her
father had died. But she really didn't want to think about that today.
She looked toward the windows and the sunny cloudless sky. "It's a
beautiful day for a picnic."

"And a picnic you shall have. I've freed my schedule considerably but
I do have some things that have to be taken care of." Zathris heaved
a dramatic sigh and fed his wife another piece of sausage. "But I
will finish with them as soon as possible."

She smiled and nodded. "Have you already arranged the picnic with
Zelenka or should I do that while you work?"

"It's all arranged, don't worry your pretty little head about a thing.
I also made sure your schedule was as clear as possible." Zathris fed
her another piece, then leaned over to kiss her. "You take the time
to relax and spend time with the boys."

"Alright," she smiled softly. It always thrilled her so when he found
these little ways to tell her how much he cared.
