D'naz was happy that things with the weyrlings were going well. He had
some time off this afternoon as another of the staff was leading the
current class. He had know he would be busy in his new position, and
he was enjoying it, but it was nice to have a bit of time to himself.
The young weyrlings needed so much more help in their early months
than they would later.
F'aen was still a fairly new member of the fighting Wings, having
graduated within the past Turn. Still, he had graduated straight into
the Weyrleader's Wing, which he and Scarleth were proud of. As was the
custom in the Weyr, news traveled quickly, about everything, and so he
had heard that D'naz had taken up a position with the Weyrling Staff.
"D'naz," he smiled as he greeted the bluerider. F'aen, being weyrbred
and extremely social, knew mostly everyone.
"How goes it in Weyrling world?"
"Ah, Faen," D'naz greeted the other, "good day today isn't it? Life is
different and more alive working with the young Weyrlings. I'd
forgotten what a sense of pride and accomplishment working the young
gave me." Pausing he looked to the greenrider. "You've not been out of
the Weyrling world long yourself. How have things been going for you
in the fighting wings?"
F'aen held up both arms and looked down at his body, "Well, I am still
alive, and with all of my body parts, no less. I consider that doing
pretty well." His lips curved into an easy grin.
D'naz chuckled, one of his rather deep, booming laughs, "Ah, F'aen, so
it is! Doing pretty well for sure. Hopefully you will keep all those
pretty parts of yours in tact for quite some time." D'naz grinned at
the young rider, noting with admiration how good looking he was. It
was just something D'naz noted of all men, regardless of rank or
rider. Most of the time, however, he kept all those thoughts to
himself, not wishing to offend the other.
"Anything new happening in your wing?" He asked, curious to know how
the drills and such were going now that he, himself, wasn't in the
fighting wings any longer.
"Oh you know the Weyrleader, he's just as tough as ever. If it weren't
for the fact that he needs us during Threadfall I would be sure he was
trying to kill us during practice." F'aen grinned, "Say, I am on my
way to the dining cavern for some klah I'd you'd like to come along."
D'naz grinned and gave a chortle. "Now _that's_ the way to get my
attention. I love a good cup of klah on _any_ day!" He reached a hand
up and patted it on the younger rider's shoulder. "One of the things I
find I actually miss about the wings is the constant drills. I used to
wish for days when I could have a break from them, but now that I'm
not part of them the same way, it's surprising how much I miss that
routine." They continued walking.
"At least I finally get to use some of my old Harpering skills though.
I had started training to teach when I was first searched. How about
you F'aen? Do you have a craft you work on in what little spare time
we get these days?"
"I also was a harper before Impressing," F'aen told the man as they
entered the Dining Cavern, "but once I became a journeyman I worked
mostly with drawing and painting. I still paint in my spare time, and
it's an easy way to earn a few spare marks here or there." The
greenrider had painted more than one risque picture of a woman, or man
even, that they wished to present to their mate. Not to mention the
usual portraits of a rider with their dragon.
"Ah, fantastic!" D'naz's voice boomed slightly at his exuberance. "I
was never all that talented with a brush or a pen to be honest. I was
gifted with the gift to gab apparently," he chuckled. "Actually they
felt I was best at teaching and showing others the skills and history
of the land. My voice wasn't the greatest, but I had begun to study up
on teaching through the songs of old. I didn't last long though as a
visiting dragon happened to say I was candidate worthy," he gave a
half-grin at that. "The rest, as they say, is history."
The moved into the dining cavern and D'naz made for the klah table
straight away. Filling two cups, he turned and reached one out to
F'aen. "Here, my friend. A good cup of klah will do any man or woman a
world of good." He lifted his mug slightly and added, "To harpering
and becoming dragonriders."
F'aen smiled as he lifted his mug as well, "Hear hear." He took a good
long drink of the klah, taking a moment to further study D'naz over
the rim of it. The bluerider, although certainly older than F'aen,
held that good looking quality about him that made the greenrider lick
his lips. Perhaps F'aen was biased because of his sexual preferences,
but in his opinion, men simply got better looking with age, unlike the
female gender. D'naz definitely fit that category.
"At least you're able to use your harpering now, it works hand and
hand with being a trainer, I think." There were some instructors on
the Weyrling staff that made F'aen cringe, just because you rode a
dragon didn't necessarily make you a good teacher.
D'naz grinned, a wide, happy grin. "Oh aye. I must say, though, I
never expected to be made Second. The Weyrleader really surprised me
with that news. Being a bluerider and all, it's not as common." He
took another sip of his mug and glanced around. "Let's grab some food,
shall we? Klah's always better with a pastry."
With a bit of an impish grin, D'naz gestured for F'aen to follow him.
He made his way over to one of the tables where one of kitchen workers
was cleaning up.
"Oh, Ganari," he called as he approached. The woman looked up, at
first guarded, and then seemed to visibly relax. "My friend," he
reached back and all but dragged F'aen forward with an arm around his
shoulders, "and I have been working _so_ hard. You wouldn't happen to
have any bubblies left that we could use to gather our strength about
us again, now would you?" D'naz's voice was all charm and sweet.
The woman glanced around, flicking her eyes back and forth, as though
checking things before leaning in and whispering. "I _do_ have a few,
but _only_ for you D'naz," she looked to the man beside him, "and your
friend." Then Ganari turned and disappeared for a few moments before
returning with something wrapped in a cloth. "Take them, but then get
away from me," she winked and shooed him. "I wasn't supposed to give
those ones away." Then she smiled and giggled and then disappeared.
D'naz turned back to F'aen and handed the cloth to him, "It pays to
make friends with all the workers," he said with a happy smile. His
arm was still around F'aen's shoulders from when he'd drawn the man
closer. D'naz found that he liked it there and F'aen hadn't shrugged
him off like so many others did in the past.
F'aen was more than content to leave the handsome bluerider's arm
around his shoulders, he even snaked his arm around D'naz's waist in
return as he took the stash of bubblies, "Friends in low places," the
greenrider said with a chuckle, "I'll have to remember that the next
time I need some goodies from the kitchens. It also helps, however,
that you could probably charm the pants off of the Weyrleader." He
teased, flashing a grin at the Weyrlingmaster's Second.
D'naz let forth a booming laugh at those words that drew stares from
the few other patrons visiting the dining hall at the time.
"Oh, F'aen. You amuse me. While I do have good charm," here he stopped
and winked at the greenrider, "I don't think the Weyrleader would
willingly give me his pants!" He chuckled again, "Especially not for
the reasons _I'd_ want them off!" It was not secret where D'naz's
interests were and he often admired the strength and physique of the
brown and bronze riders, but he knew that their interest did not
follow the same path.
Turning his head slightly he eyed F'aen a bit, for the first time
thinking about the rider, not just as a recently graduated weyrling,
but as a _greenrider_, and a rather attractive one at that. Yet, it
wasn't his face that attracted D'naz. It was his demeanor, his
presence, his joy. It reminded him in some ways of the happier times
he'd had with N'ril. D'naz faltered a bit in his steps and his smile,
but then quickly pushed the thoughts aside. He'd done well in not
dwelling on his mate for sometime, yet today had drawn out those
thoughts again.
Trying to lighten his own mood back up lest his sink into the dark
thoughts that sometimes pulled at him, D'naz gave F'aen a mischievious
grin and leaned in and whispered, "Now, I wonder if I could charm
_your_ pants off?" He chuckled and gave the lad a wink to let him know
he was just having some fun. Some greenriders took offense far to
easily, he knew, from experience, but he didn't feel F'aen would be
one like that.
If D'naz could have known F'aen's how close the greenrider's thoughts
mirrored his own then he wouldn't have worried one bit about offending
him. The greenrider was incredibly open about his feelings and
sexuality, and was far from shy. As a painter, and unabashed admirer
of the human body, F'aen could easily imagine D'naz naked, and what he
saw looked good.
"I am afraid that all you'd have to do is ask." F'aen returned with a
teasing chuckle, although there was a hint of truth behind it as well.
As soon as Weyrling rules had allowed, F'aen had not lacked for make
company in his bed.
D'naz turned his head sharply and looked at the younger man. F'aen had
surprised him. With a smile, however, D'naz quickly recovered himself
and bumping into F'aen with a wink he said, "Good to know for the
future." He meant it. He hadn't expected things to go this direction
today, but they had. D'naz wasn't sorry. He'd had some interest here
and there since N'ril's death, but nothing had sparked him the way
this encounter with F'aen had. Was it just that he was finally ready
to move forward, or was there more to it than that? Only time would
tell. For now, he wanted to enjoy the company and the bubbly pie he
carried in his hand.
