Jeyme was still disappointed that she wouldn't be able to travel to
Emerald Falls for Arippa and Reven's wedding. She and Arippa had
become good friends while they were being fostered under Lady Felyna.
Jeyme had even been there the first night Arippa met Reven and she had
been with the when they went riding as a group.
She was happy for Arippa, especially after the disappointment of
Namiren's death. Reven was a good looking man, and according to the
rumor mill, working hard to get Green Valley in shape.
Having heard that D'hol would be attending, the Weyrling went to his
office, letter in hand. If she couldn't be there in person then she at
least wanted to write Arippa a letter if congratulations, and
hopefully, D'hol would deliver it for her.
Knocking at the man's door, she rocked back on her heels as she waited.
"Enter!" D'hol was busy at his desk, a bubbly pie half-eaten beside a
mound of hides. He glanced up as the door opened and one brow arched.
"Jeyme. This is unexpected."
Jeyme flashed a small smile as she entered his office. She hadn't been
there since the first time they'd met on a Weyrling assignment. The
letter she had written for Arippa was clutched in one hand.
"I don't mean to interrupt you while you're busy," she shot a teasing
glance towards his half eaten bubbly, "but I was wondering if you were
attending the wedding at Emerald Falls tomorrow?"
"I'm almost always busy, Jeyme, so when you interrupt me it's a
welcome break." D'hol sat back, answering her teasing glance with a
cocked brow and a half-smile before answering. "I'd been invited yes.
Politically, it's best that I do go, whether or not I want to. Why do
you ask?"
Jeyme took a seat in front of the man's desk, liking the fact that he
called her a welcome distraction, "I was wondering if you would
deliver a letter for me while you are there? I became friends with the
bride while I was there, but because of Quinneth I won't be able to
attend."
"Ah." He considered her for a moment before he shrugged. "I suppose I
can." He held out his hand for the letter. "I had forgotten that was
where you were living before you were Searched, but you're right,
Quinneth isn't ready for your absense just yet."
A smile wreathed Jeyme's face as she handed the letter over to the
Wingleaeder, "Thank you D'hol. I wouldn't have bothered you with it,
but I don't really know any of the others that will probably be
going." She combined her fingers through her short, chin length hair
as she thought about Quinneth, "She's maturing faster than I thought,
or maybe it's just going by faster than I had imagined. I can't go to
their wedding, but I console myself with the fact that I'll be able to
visit them myself in no time."
"I suggest you get to know them. I believe the Weyrleader and
Weyrwoman are going. You could end up in one of their wings,
eventually." Though he had singled her out for his own, he didn't
necessarily get the first choice. He tucked the letter away and
crossed his arms on his desk. "Greens mature more quickly, at least
physically. Soon she'll be rising and you'll have to deal with that
aspect of her nature."
Jeyme had met the Weyrleaders briefly after Impressing Quinneth, but
she certainly didn't feel comfortable enough with them to ask them to
deliver a letter for her, shards, she hadn't even been sure if D'hol
would agree. At the mention of mating flights, the greenrider shrugged
her shoulders lightly, "Yes, I suppose so, although I am far more
concerned about fighting Thread than waking up with a stranger."
"As well you should be." D'hol agreed smoothly. "But don't discount
mating flights. It may not be a stranger you wake up to. It could be
someone you don't like or someone you do. " He sat back. "For someone
from a Hold, you take the idea of promiscuity quite well."
"Well," Jeyme confessed, "I tell myself that it's just two or three
days out of the Turn, and, I am trying to leave behind all of that
Hold nonsense." Of course, sometimes that was easier said than done.
She did get nervous at the idea of mating flights, but at least it
wasn't as it would have been had she stayed at the hold- married off
to some older man who she would be chained to until he died.
D'hol's face grew serious. "Listen, Jeyme, trying to adjust to Weyr
ways isn't going to that easy. Its how you were raised and that can't
be discarded like yesterdays rubbish. I commend you for trying, but it
will take time and flights have always been a more sensitive topic for
holdbred. I have seen many a holdbred green rider come out of their
first flight sobbing because they weren't ready for it. I've even been
the cause of those tears a time or two. Its not pleasant for either
party. Do yourself a favor and approach your Weyrling Master about it
as soon as your green is old enough."
Jeyme had heard such stories before, but she still found her eyebrow
raised as she studied the man's serious expression, "And what is my
Weyrlingmaster going to do about that?"
"Your Weyrling Master can assist you in finding an appropriate man to
teach you and make you comfortable in those areas you may be
inexperienced in. Most holdbred greenriders are very innocent in that
respect and are embarrassed to talk to the weyrling staff about it and
then pay the price for it I've known several who have never viewed
flights positively afterwards. Don't do that to yourself."
The greenrider smirked a bit, unable to keep the teasing glint from
her eyes, "Isn't that something you could just help me with?"
Both brows shot up and he leaned towards her against his desk. "I am
more than capable of doing that, yes. However, I believe your Weyrling
Master would prefer someone a little closer to your age and not in a
position of authority." He spoke plainly, not returning the tease
though his lips lifted just a little. "The subject is a moot one
however, if you've already handled it privately before you arrived."
Jeyme debated on answering that before arching one eyebrow, "No, I
have not, as I am sure you expected," men looking for marriage didn't
pay expensive dowries for used goods, "and as for the Weyrlingmaster,
he's not the one who is having to sleep with someone, so I dare say I
should get the final decision in the matter." And if she was choosing,
it would definitely be D'hol, none of the other men close to her in
age seemed half as interesting as the Wingleader. Besides that, she
got the feeling that D'hol more than knew his way around the furs.
"Yes, I would say you do get the final decision, but Sh'del and the
Weyrleader might frown on me as a choice." N'vanik definitely would,
he knew. "Even so, you have until your fourth month as a weyrling
before you can really make that decision. You may decide otherwise
between now and then. And, I'm not going to encourage you to follow in
that line of thought, Jeyme." Though it wasn't because he wasn't
interested; he most certainly was. "I'm an an authority figure and it
could be seen as me taking advantage."
"Perhaps," Jeyme stood, although she had already made her mind up about the matter, "I'll talk to the Weyrlingmaster about it when the time comes. Thank you for your help, D'hol, and for agreeing to take the letter for me."
"You're very welcome." He paused and then offered her a slight smile. "But, Jeyme, should you make that decision..." His smile grew slightly wider. "You would not regret it."
Her grin matched D'hol's, "Oh, of that, sir, I have no doubt."
