U'das has called whole of his wing to a meeting. It was unscheduled
one so more than one face looked puzzled when they walked in and took
seats around the long table. Wearing eyeglasses, U'das studied their
faces when the came in. Shards, he was going to miss them all.

D'arvn just folded his hands on the knee he had crossed over his other
leg and waited whiled the voices calmed down. These kinds of meetings
were fairly rare and usually brought some kind of news to the wing.

S'ber was one of the puzzled ones but he was sure to sit at the back
to keep from blocking anyone else's view.

J'ren leaned back in his chair, his hands laced together. Unscheduled
meetings weren't common, so it was obvious that whatever the subject
matter was, it was going to be important. He glanced around - almost
everyone was there.

When everyone was seated, U'das cleared his throat and began: "Dear
friends and wingmates. I have had the honour and pleasure to lead this
wing for several Turns now. However, that is going to change." He
continued by telling them about the healer's prognosis about his eye
sight and it's gradual deteriorating. "So, for medical reasons, I'll
be stepping out as Wingleader in near future. As from this day on, I
won't be flying Falls. J'ren will be leading you during those. Drills
and wing evaluations I will be doing as usual."

K'mai frowned, sad at the news. U'das was a great Wingleader and he
considered him a friend. "We'll be sorry to see you go."

"I'll be staying in River Bluff Weyr, just not as a Wingleader," U'das
answered him. He was going to miss his wing too.

This, of course, meant more responsibility would fall upon him, but
J'ren knew that the day would eventually come - he just hadn't thought
it would be quite just yet. He also hadn't realised that U'das' eyes
were so bad.

D'arvn had known a little about the situation in advance though he
hadn't known his weyrmate's father was going to actually step down. He
sent a message to U'fouinn through Falzeth. It would be quite the
change to lose such an experienced Wingleader. The room around him
seemed stunned and the silence just went on far too long so finally he
began to clap and finally stand in appreciation of the job Udas had
done over the years. One by one other riders joined him until the room
was loud with applause.

Surprise was etched on S'ber's face as his eyebrows shot up. The
thought of J'ren taking over didn't upset him but the idea that a spot
was opening up in the wing was an interesting one. He knew that
Dylorth wasn't the most ambitious bronze but it never hurt to consider
the possibilities. "It's good to know that we'll still have contact
with you, sir. If there is ever anything Dylorth and I can do for
you, simply ask," he said with the utmost respect, his meaty hands
causing the hair on the rider before him to wave in the wind he
created.

"It's good you'll still be around, but the Wing won't be the same
without you," K'mai said.

"Thank you, friends," U'das was visibly touched by the applaude and had to
wipe his eye corner.
"Anyway, the official date is first day of month first, Turn seven so
you're stuck with me until then." That day seemed awfully close now.

Hearing how soon it was going to happen was a bit surprising but S'ber
figured it had more to do with U'das' pride in not giving in until it was
almost too late than with anything else. With a final word to the man, he
stepped back for others to speak to him before getting a final dismissal.

There was still some time yet before the change would actually take
place. Hopefully it would be enough time for everyone to get used to
the idea. Even J'ren.
