D'arvn

D'arvn

The message from D'arvn had been vague and as Bahji made her way
towards the lake to meet him, her brow knit in curiousity. It wasn't
about weaving; he would have just met her in the Weyr's weaving rooms.
But she could not figure out what he wanted to see her about.

Tugging at her ear, she found her favorite boulder and sat, her
fingers stroking along her skirts to smooth them.

D'arvn spotted her sitting on her favorite rock and shifted the basket
he carried carefully before he crunched up beside her. "Hi Bahji," he
said.

Her head lifted immediately and she smiled in greeting. "There you are.
Hello D'arvn." Her head tilted. "What's going on? Why the mystery?"

"Weeeeeeellll," he drawled. "I have a little gift for you for Turns
End." He gently set the basket in her lap. "Be very careful," he said
hanging on to the handle while she adjusted to it.

"A present?" Bahji's face lit up immediately. "D'arvn you didn't have
to do that..." Her hands went immediately to the basket and her
brow furrowed. "I make these...I think I made this one. What.."
Nimble fingers flicked around the basket, and she stopped as
they brushed against something smooth, hard and very warm.
"D'arvn?"

He crouched down next to her. "Its a flit egg." he said softly. "We'll
have to make sure it impresses to you when it hatches." He wasn't
quite sure how they could assure that but he thought he and U'fouinn
could make it happen.

Inhaling quickly, Bahji's eyes widened. "A flit egg? Really?" There
was a sudden squeak as her hands gripped the basket tightly.
"You got me a flit egg?" A sudden wide smile of happiness
gleamed in her face. "Thank you! Thank you so much! I never
thought that..." She hugged the basket gently. "Thank you.."

"You're welcome," he kissed her temple gently. There was nothing more
than brotherly affection in the act. But he'd known she'd been busy
making gifts for everyone around her for weeks. So, she deserved the
gift if anyone did. "The trader said it should hatch within the next
sevenday."

She smiled towards him, hugging the basket to her chest, but then
blinked. "A sevenday?" Her grip tightened slightly. "But..what do
I do? I don't know anything about flits."

"We'll all help you so don't worry," he said. "You'll need to keep an
ear out and if you hear scratching or you feel it rocking. Or other
flits show up and start humming you'll need to be ready with food."

"Food. Right." She nodded. "Uhm...what kind? Any kind?" She wasn't
worried about keeping an ear out. Her hearing had grown to be
exceptional since the loss of her sight. But the actual care for
the flit would be a little more problematic. "You'll help?" She
sighed, relieved, then hugged the basket. "You don't know what
this means to me."

"Meat," he answered. "Yes, we'll help." He couldn't help but grin.
"We'll make sure you have the right stuff." He was touched by her
gratitude but it had been a simple act of kindness when he'd seen that
last lone egg in the trader's basket.

Bahji offered him a wide, happy smile and she nodded. "Okay. I can't
believe it. I'm going to have a flit of my own."
