The summons to the Weyrwoman's office was hardly expected.
Bahji had only heard the woman once or twice, but she could
not figure why Rhosyn wanted to speak to her. Compounded
with an already stressful sevenday, her nerves were in near tatters.
She had to take a deep breath as her guide murmured that
they had arrived. She thanked the young woman and tapped
on the open door. "Weyrwoman? You wanted to see me?"
"Aye I did. Please come in." She knew the girl had not been in
her office and wouldn't know her way about so Rhosyn stood up
and came around her desk. "There is an empty chair about seven
steps from the doorway-straight ahead." The doorway had been left open for
her so she motioned for the girl with Bahji to shut it once she had come
inside.
"Thank you." Moving carefully she stepped forward, found the chair
and then felt around it to finally sit, her hands in her lap. Her head
tilted marginally as the door closed, and her brow furrowed. "May
I ask...have I done something wrong?"
Coming back around to sit with a small thump, Rhosyn thought about
how to approach this conversation. "No. I just need to ask you some
questions. First off, do you like being here in the Weyr?"
That was not a question she had expected at all. She nodded, clearly
confused. "Yes. Yes I do. I love it here. I've more friends than
I have ever had in my life." There was a pause and she swallowed.
"Why?"
"To be plain-your father is here. And he is wanting to take you home.
I explained to him that it's your choice whether or not you go. So now
I am asking-would you like to return home with him?" It was probably
as she expected.
Bahji paled immediately and her hands clutched at her abdomen,
her fingers digging into the cloth of her dress with a nervous tremble.
"I..no. I don't want to go home." She swallowed. "I love my father.
I love my family, but..." She shook her head. "I can't."
"Can't or won't?" Oh something was going on here. "Listen, I will help
you with this, but I need to know what's going on Bahji. You understand?"
Rhosyn hoped she did. She wouldn't tell anyone anything after all.
"I....both." Her hands fluttered over her stomach as she shifted. She
drew in her lower lip and took another deep breath as her shoulders
slumped. "I'm with child, Weyrwoman. My father...he wouldn't
understand and I couldn't wed the man that my father would
like while I carried another man's babe. It wouldn't be right."
"Ahhh." **And I am not letting Weyrblood out of this Weyr** "Very well.
I think you need to tell your father that you are not going home and I will
witness it. If he has further issue I will deal with that. Can you do that?"
Thinking to herself that this girl had put up with much in her life, Rhosyn
wondered what Jitarim would do. If he didn't accept it, she was not in the
mood to be very understanding.
Dredging up a measure of internal strength, Bahji slowly nodded. "Yes.
I will tell him again." She continued. "My father...he's a good man, just
very stubborn. I'm his only child."
