Meledei," Cyradis smiled and beckoned the younger woman from her
desk. "Can you come in here a moment?"
"Sure." Meledei crossed the room over to the Weyrwoman's desk. She'd
been summoned to the office but didn't know why. She wondered if it
had anything to do with the hatching.
Cyradis poured two cups of juice and brought them to her desk while
she waited for the young gold rider to get herself situated. "I'm sure
you're aware of the situation with one of our hatchlings," she stated.
Meledei tilted her head to the side. Ah yes, the hatching. It had
been an interesting revelation in one aspect. "You mean L'cor?"
"I do," she nodded. "We're going to have to keep our eye on the young
bronzrider." She tapped a finely manicured nail on her desk. "I'll
need your help in keeping track of his... well, partners." She waved a
hand, "I know he won't be involved with anyone while he's a Junior
Weyrling but we must be alert after that."
"Because of his lineage?" Meledei arched an eyebrow. So the kid was
the son of a Lord Holder. It wasn't like it had never happened
before. Granted, it wasn't common, but it_had_ happened in the past.
"Yes," she replied. "Lord Corowal made certain I was aware of his
interest in any offspring. They will be 'blood' after all." She half
smiled at Meledei. "While we do keep records when we know of a child's
parentage we're going to have to watch and report L'cor's to Emerald
Falls. I have a feeling he'll want more than that but we'll see."
Meledei's nose wrinkled and she shook her head. "I don't understand.
This guy isn't even a legitimate child. He's got several who are.
Why does it matter? And does L'cor know about this?"
Cyradis half smiled. "A lot of the Holder's ways and traditions don't
make much sense to Weyr folk," she said. "L'cor's father acknowledged
him at the hatching, and that makes all the difference. I'm pretty
sure L'cor knows what it means for that to happen. It means that his
children will be pawns in the political give and take of the hold
bloodlines. They can make alliances."
She didn't even mention the prestige to Lord Corowal to have a
bronzerider son. L'cor could not Hold so Corowal's legitimate heirs
would not be challenged. He could not marry either. But by tradition
of the Weyr, any children would be legitimate and could be raised as
Blood.
"I see." And what if L'cor didn't realise it? Well, Meledei was
going to make sure he understood what it meant. "Did Corowal
acknowledge him before or did he wait to see what colour he Impressed
on the sands?" How convenient to wait until after Impression was made.
That way if L'cor had Impressed the 'wrong colour' then Corowal
wouldn't have been embarrassed. But of course, Impressing a bronze
was its own prestige and what Lord Holder wouldn't want that?
Cyradis sat back in her chair. That was actually a very good question
and she looked at the younger woman with some approval. "Good
question," she smiled. "I spoke to Lord Corowal after the Hatching and
the impression I got was that he was very proud of the boy. Of course
he didn't share his prior relationship or his intentions." But at this
point she hand her own private opinion. "I did kind of get the feeling
he was surprised and pleased at the Impression and blurted it out
rather than planned it, if that's what you're asking."
"Of course he's proud of him." Meledei frowned - and why wouldn't he
be? A lot of boys dreamed about Impressing a bronze and their fathers
surely had such thoughts too. "But did Corowal officially recognize
L'cor as his son before the Impression? And had his son Impressed
say...a blue, or a green, would he have bothered to recognize his son
then?" Of course, no one would ever know the answer to the second
question.
"No, the boy hadn't been recognized before the Impression. Holders
especially their Lords, have many things to consider when officially
recognizing a child born out of wedlock." She could use this as a
teaching tool. She knew a bit of the young woman's history, but she'd
been raised in the Weyr where that stigma didn't exist. "As a
dragonrider, the boy cannot inherit and therefore, yes. I believe he
would have recognized him no matter what he'd Impressed." Privately
she wasn't so sure if it had been green. That would have come with
another set of problems.
Meledei honestly couldn't agree with that. Brown, most likely.
Bronze, most definitely. Green or blue? Why did she have a feeling
Corowal would have remained silent? "Well, I'll keep what you've told
me in mind."
"Good," she said. "Are you hungry?"
"I could go with some food." Meledei relaxed as the subject moved on
to a more pleasant matter. "Want to get something to eat?"
"That's what I was thinking," she smiled and stood. "Let's go see what
Qorri has sent us today."
