So N'vanik had a new Wingleader. Meledei had to admit she was curious. Of
course, it was also good to know all the Wingleaders and the riders as well
- by face if not by name. She did work with the Wingleaders from time to
time, even if it was mainly in regards to records and more domestic duties
of the Weyr. Still, she thought she ought to introduce herself and welcome
him if nothing else. He was a bronzerider too, and that made him a
possible contender when Elleth's time came. She would at least like to
know him a little bit with that sort of possibility. Of course, she wasn't
the kind to come without bearing gifts, so after a quick stop, she made her
way to the man's office, laden with a small basket, and knocked upon the
door.
"Come in!" D'hol sat at his desk, his head resting on his chin as he
perused the hides in front of him. Wing reaction time was quite good and
they were coalesced well as a unit. Only a few minor scores from the last
fall too. Making a notation, he rubbed his jaw. K'deren,
it turned out, was a fine wingsecond. He'd have to take the time to get to
know him a little bit better.
"Hi." Meledei greeted the bronzerider with a bright smile as soon as she
stepped inside the office. She moved forward and held out her hand to him.
"I heard you just took up a position as Wingleader. so I thought I'd come
welcome you and introduce myself. I'm Meledei."
D'hol looked up and his brows rose and he stood to greet the young woman
who had entered his office. "Ah...the young goldrider." He inclined his
head. "D'hol, of Yumath. Yes I did." His brow flicked in questioning
towards her basket. "Well...thank you for the considerate welcome. It
is...unexpected."
"Eh, it's nothing. Here, this is for you." Meledei placed the small
basket on the desk in front of him. "I wasn't sure what your tastes are
but I hope you like it." Of course, she just went with something she
liked. Bubblies. After all, who didn't like bubblies? "So you came from
up North?"
"Thank you." He looked down at the basket and suddenly gave a wide smile
and then a chuckle. "You know how to get to a man with a sweet tooth." And
it was true. D'hol did have a thing for bubblies, though it wasn't widely
known. It was a weakness of his. "Please sit." Reaching in, he plucked a
bubbly out of the basket and then offered her one. "I did indeed."
"I didn't know you had a sweet tooth, but now that I do..." Meledei
grinned and she held up her hands. "Thanks, but those are for you. Trust
me, I'll make sure I get one for myself later." She cocked her head,
studying the man. "So how do you like the South thus far?"
Taking a small bite, D'hol sighed with pleasure at the taste. Fresh
bubblies were not as common in the North as the South and he had
missed them more than he realized. He looked at Meledei and put
the bubbly down. "Just fine, actually." Though truth be told, the
South, especially those in charge, were most likely far less
happy. "Just here to do a good job."
"Well, it's warmer here so you can enjoy that while doing a good job." Meledei knew the look on the man's face. She had a feeling it was the same that marked her face when she enjoyed the delectable pastries. "What made you decide to move down here anyway?"
The questions she asked were often those he ignored or kept quiet about. A private man, D'hol did not often encourage questioning about it. But she had brought him bubblies, so he was feeling quite charitable. "I moved around often in the north." He shrugged his shoulders. "But I am from the South. When I heard about the opening, I decided it might be good to come home to settle."
"I can understand that. I've never lived anywhere but the South, but I really don't want to live anywhere else." Meledei didn't even want to leave Dolphin Cove, though she'd be more receptive to that than going up North. "Did you grow up in a Hold?
Putting down the bubbly, D'hol looked at Meledei with a bit of a frown. "Why does everyone want to know where I'm from?" His brow knit. "First that yapping puppy of a Weyrwoman from River Bluff and now..." He shook his head and breathed deeply. It wouldn't do to alienate a goldrider from his own weyr; it was one thing to be annoyed at Rhosyn, but quite another to be rude to a woman who had at least been polite. " I apologize. It's curiosity, I suppose, right? I'm Weyrbred, actually. "
Meledei tensed then relaxed when D'hol made his apology and she offered another smile. "Yeah, just trying to get to know you, that's all. You never have to answer anything you don't want to. I'm Weyrbred too. I was born at Thayan Peak, before the earthquake...and of course, came here after."
Considering that, D'hol nodded. "I'm no mystery, I'm just simply private." He explained. "I suppose it makes people believe I have some deep dark secret that must be discovered." He gave a slight smile in return before taking another bite of the bubbly.
"Well then your secret is safe with me." Meledei gave him a wink. "I'll stop bothering you with questions now. Welcome to Dolphin Cove."

D'hol's smile was actually welcoming and held a touch of warmth. The girl was spunky and again...she had brought bubblies. "You're not bothering me. Feel welcome to drop in any time you like. And thank you for the welcome. "
