Just like they'd been taught the thrum of dragon voices began to
vibrate the very rock of Dolphin Cove. This was it! The time had come
for him to Stand and see if there was a dragon who would choose him!
But he didn't run like so many of the other candidates. No, he walked
to his shared room and took out the carefully prepared white clothing
that marked him as a candidate. His fingers ran down the soft fabric
and he remembered the headwomans instructions. He pulled off his
clothing and pulled on the robe.
Lecordin fell in line with the rest of the candidates. They all walked
in to the Hatching grounds and he scanned the stands looking for his
mother. He didn't see her though he did spot Oria in the stands. He
waved and smiled. Then he found his father with the other dignitaries.
This time he didn't wave. He wasn't sure Corowal was looking in his
direction at that moment. He did give a nod in that direction as if to
include the Weyrleaders and other Lords and Ladies.
It was almost as if he were walking in a dream. In all of his visions
of a possible future he'd never really contemplated becoming a
dragonrider. That happened to other people in books and Harper tales.
One very young boy ahead of him was almost quivering in fear. He was
probably just getting his very first chance to Stand. Lecordin put
his hand on the boy's shoulder.
"It will be alright, just remember what you've been taught. Project
confidence and love. If your lifemate is hatched today, it will find
you."
Of course he was repeating the same thing to himself as he walked to
his place and bowed to the great gold queen. She was so much bigger
than Oria's green. He flushed momentarily thinking about the private
time they'd spent together. It had been only a few hour but it would
have to be enough if he Impressed today. The noise of both human and
dragon voices behind him surged louder as the eggs began to rock in
earnest. It was hard to hear the cracking and popping as small shards
fell away.
He was aware of others around him and the voices from the stands
calling to one or another of the Candidates around him. He grinned and
lifted his chin at Celebaz who was down the line from him a ways.
They'd said they would try to room together if they both Impressed. Of
course it was really up to the Weyrling staff. He knew that but maybe
just maybe they'd let them.
The humming increased and his head whipped around to see one egg
rocking madly. Cracks ran all over it and suddenly the egg almost
exploded outward and a tiny bronze body spilled onto the hatching
sands.
Lecordin's eyes nearly popped out of his head. It was so tiny and
clumsy and the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen in his life. The
little thing was barreling directly at a boy in front of him but
didn't show any signs of slowing down. A cheer rose from the stands
and he pulled the boy to the side to keep him from getting knock down
by the little dragonette.
}:Mine,:{ a voice queried in his head.
His gaze whipped back to the little bronze and fell into the whirling
eyes. **Me?**
:}Yes you are mine:{
He stepped forward to touch the little vision "Tonuth?" he asked a
little shaky. Somehow he just knew the dragon's name.
"That's my son!" he heard shouted behind him but he didn't turn as
love infused and overwhelmed him through his new link with the little bronze.
Hunger rumbled his belly and he looked up with wonder "His name is
Tonuth," he cried out.
A weyrling assistant came to pull at his elbow and urge him off the
sands. "This way," she said.
:}Is there food? I'm very hungry.:{
"Yes, yes, there is food, This way," he said and followed the girl off
the sands but carefully attended his little lifemate. He didn't even
see any other Impressions. his eyes were only for the little stumbling
bronze at his side. The flood of love and total acceptance was like
nothing he'd ever experienced and nothing he could have possibly been
prepared for. A momentary thought flitted across his brain that he
wanted to tell Oria he understood now but it was gone in a flash and
he was telling Tonuth again... **Chew!**
