After a few days of resting, she was feeling better but she still wasn't
anywhere near healed up. Her skin hadn't behaved normally. Apparently it had
to regrow itself rather than just peel off. And that meant pain. So Lenala
was performing her duties and Rhosyn was still in bed. At least her fever
had stopped.
"Knock, knock!" called the Weyrleader.
"Come in," came the grumpy reply. Her body was sticky and it was sticking to
the sheets. Unfortunately, that meant every time she pulled them off, it hurt
her. Her face had a look of misery upon it and she knew she was missing all
of the preparation for Turns End.
"I brought you these. They still need your signature I'm afraid," apologized
K'sedel. "I know it's not what you want to be doing right now."
"Actually I wish I could. I wish I could be out there, helping to get ready.
Anything but this." Moaning just a bit, she slugged back a drink of fellis wine and
then pulled herself up enough to see what needed doing. "How's the rest of the
Weyr? Is Lenala doing okay?"
"I think so, I've not heard any open complaints. Maybe this is
just what she needs to get herself back on track."
"I hope so. She looked a bit like a scared wherry when I told her she was on
her own, but you were there if she had questions." Scribbling quickly, Rhosyn
went through it as quick as possible. "Faranth I hurt so much. My skin...it's
like...I don't know..it's all wet and gooey."
"Do you want me to get the healers to come and check on you again?" asked
K'sedel, a note of concern in his voice. "There must be something they can
do to soothe your skin, some lotion or salve."
"Reeva scrubbed it to keep it from getting infected then covered me with
something before. Then she doses me with painkillers in the wine. She'll probably be
coming by soon I think." Scratching her nose, which was one part she could scratch she
handed him the hides. "Ah well, at least the Flight went fine and we'll be having eggs
again." **Think of the good things**
"That we will. Have the healers said when they expect you to be back to duties?"
"She said at least a sevenday-probably looking closer to two when I can
actually put a covering against my skin again." She frowned at that, trying
not to cry at the sight she made.
"I'm sure you'll have plenty of visitors in the mean time, and if there is
anyone in particular you'd like to see, I can get word to them." It was no
hollow offer, he genuinely meant it, even if he had to put the straps on
Nikornath and go fetch them himself.
"That's just it-I don't want visitors. I don't want anyone else to see me like this. I
just...I just want to curl up and sleep until I have skin again. And it
doesn't help that one minute I'm hot and then I'm cold." Finding herself
whining and complaining, she shut up and leaned back into her pillows. "I
told Gelira if you, Lenala, Solieira, or the healers need me-you can come
in. Everyone else-out."
"Would you like me to make sure people know, I'm betting there will be more
than a few curious people who'll try to insist that they just have to come
in and see how you are."
"You can say I'm under healer orders to stay put and not to be bothered.
Hopefully that will do it. I don't want everyone to know I hot boiled myself like a
dimglow." Not that she had been in her right mind at the time but Rhosyn needed the
Weyr to trust her-not see her as an idiot.
He nodded. "Consider it done, and I'll make sure that Sol, and Lenala know
to say the same things."
And then she remembered something she wanted to speak to K'sedel about.
One thing and another-it had slipped her mind and she hadn't had the chance
to mention it. Now was a good time, though, since she had her Weyrleader's
undivided attention and there was no one else to listen. "I forgot to tell you,
but when I was at the Dolphin Cove hatching....I met N'vanik's new wingleader.
The man was quite rude and insulted both U'das and myself. I told N'vanik
and as it's his man-he'll deal with it, but I thought you should know. I
understand that K'deren is going to be working with the man. I just asked him where he was
from and he got all..strange. Seemed like he was hiding something. U'das
remembered him from up north but he couldn't remember anything but a flight he took
from him."
If she were K'deren, she might want to know, though she knew he couldn't
do much about it. Then again, N'vanik might already have spoken to the
Wingsecond. Either way, Rhosyn wanted K'sedel to be aware of the issue if
the man ever came to River Bluff and for Weyr relations purposes.
"Do you remember his name?" Whoever he was, he'd clearly made a none too
good impression on Rhosyn, and possibly U'das as well.
"D'hol he said," she replied, still thinking A'hol in the back of her mind.
"I'll make some inquiries," K'sedel told her.
"All right," she agreed, thinking it was probably time for a bathing. "I think
I'm going to try and take a bath. Would probably be a good time for Solieira
to get someone to change the sheets. I swear, I stick to them." Moving
slowly, she got herself up off the bed and once she was out from under the
sheets, the true damage was visible. Even after a few days, it almost
looked worse than before. Her skin was peeling before it was ready,
leaving wet pink places in its wake.
"I'll take my leave of you then," K'sedel said diplomatically. "And I'll
make sure that things are kept as you want them to be."
"Thank you. If I need anything, I'll let Nikornath or someone know. If
Lenala can't keep it together, you'll know what to do." Of course it wouldn't
be very long and the other woman had managed during much longer periods
of time when Rhosyn was grounded. However, the Weyrwoman
had been there to answer her questions. Now she was on her own
completely.
"Don't worry, just concentrate on recovering."
