His office was small and as D'hol took in the spartan area, his lips
twitched. It would do. He laid the files he had been given as well as
the wing roster on the desk and sat, flicking his eyes over the list
with a critical eye. Good to have a healthy amount of blues and greens,
but he didn't know their strengths yet. And he'd have to meet this,
K'deren, his assigned wing second. His lips pursed slightly in thought.
Asking Yumath to contact K'deren's brown to ask him to meet, D'hol
took a sip of his cooling klah. Might as well get started.
}:Yumath's wishes to meet with us,:{ Donneth told his rider.
**Please inform him I'll be there as soon as possible.**
Yumath relayed the message and D'hol nodded to himself. **Yumath,
why don't you feel this brown out? Get his measure.**
The bronze rumbled from his perch and gave mental assent. }:I had
planned on it. I have to do this for all of them in our wing. We cannot
have a weak link.:{
**There's always at least one, you know that.** D'hol started the pot
of klah, amused by his dragons quiet intensity.
}:All the better to seek it out now then wait until Fall.:{
A short while later K'deren knocked on the door. "It's K'deren."
"Come in." D'hol stood behind the desk, not taking his seat,
but instead leafing through the hides and studying the histories
of the drills. He didn't even look up as the door opened. "You're
K'deren?"
"Yes sir," came the reply. "Donneth's rider."
Finally looking up, D'hol gestured to the seat across
from his desk. "Have a seat. I'm D'hol, Yumath's rider. I wanted
to have a chat with you about the wing. I'm sure N'vanik's let
you know that I was coming in as wingleader by now." He
sat, leaning back in his chair just a little to relax. "You know
the wing better than I do at this point, so I'd like you to
give me a summary of it's strengths and weaknesses."
"We could do with a few more blueriders. We're a little short there. But
some of our greenriders are outstanding, Cosani in particular." K'deren
didn't mention who the girl's father was, it was fairly common knowledge and
in her record anyway. "Ta'sun has just transferred back from the Queen's
wing after a broken arm. He'll need watching for a while as he gets used to
us again."
Listening, D'hol made the necessary notes to the side of the hides, his
eyes narrowed as he made notations of the names. "Only some of the
green riders, you say? Hm...well, we can work on that." He stopped, then
finally looked up and peered intently at K'deren. "Now, to something
a little more personal." He leaned back. "Tell me why I should keep you
as wingsecond?"
"Continuity," he said without hesitation. "There have been a good few
changes here over the last few turns or so, not just in the wing, but at
Dolphin Cove as a whole. It helps to let the youngsters see someone they
know isn't going to run out on them, or transfer on a whim."
D'hol snorted softly. "Change is inevitable and the wing needs to know
how to adapt and overcome it. If I were to choose another, you'd still
be in the wing. Can you not come up with anything better than that?"
K'deren knew that he had to keep his temper, clearly, this was some sort of
test. "You are, of course, entitled to choose your own 'second. But, I have
the respect of the wing, and that counts for something. They trust me to get
them through fall with as few problems as possible. That has taken time, and
they know it goes both ways, in the air and on the ground. I'm not their
friend, they know I'm in charge. Ask any wingrider and he or she will tell
you that. "
"Hmm...We'll see. Consider yourself forewarned, K'deren. I will be
watching you to see how you perform. If you don't perform to my
standards, you'll be replaced." He leaned forward to meet the
brown rider's gaze firmly. "And don't rely on any relationship with
a ranking rider to keep your place. Cyradis and I have a distinct
understanding. It won't have any bearing on my dealings with you."
"Understood."
"We're finished here, then." He laid aside the hides. "Drills are first
thing in the morning. I'll expect to see you then."
