"Hey stranger." Meledei picked up her pace so she could catch up to
the bronzerider as he made his way through the halls. SHe cast her
grin upward to the handsome Weyrleader. Of course, she had no
intention on trying to seduce him, though surely many a woman did.
N'vanik was far too much like a big brother to her to try anything
like that - not that it was her style anyway. "Where are you off to
in such a hurry?"
"Sneaking out to the beach to get some work done." He nodded at the
hides in his arms.
"That doesn't really surprise me." And it didn't. Meledei had caught
N'vanik outside doing work before. She'd even followed his example on
particularly nice days. Somehow the sunshine had actually helped her
wake up and focus a bit more. Or perhaps it had been the fresh air.
"Do you ever take a break?"
"Whenever I can get away with it." He laughed.
"Which isn't often, I bet." A Weyrleader's work was never done. How
many times had he stayed up into the wee hours of the morning?
Meledei suspected he'd lost count. "The clutch was a nice one. How
are things going with Cyradis?"
"Better. The clutch and her new weyrmate seem to have put her in a
good mood." It made him less worried that she might abandon them, but
doubt still lingered.
"That'll do it." Having a weyrmate would certainly ground someone,
but was it enough? Meledei eyed the stack that N'vanik held. "You
plan on staying outside til the moons rise and set?"
"Oh no. I'm efficient. I also know that if I work too long I get
grumpy, and no one likes a grumpy Weyrleader." He nudged her
playfully.
"Grumpy Weyrleaders mean a grumpy Weyr. Not generally a good thing."
Meledei responded with a goodnatured jab from her finger. "If you get
grumpy, I'll just have to smack you out of it, that's all."
"Why are you women always threatening me with violence?" He pushed
open a door and bright sunlight greeted them.
"Because it's fun?" Meledei squinted at the light til her eyes got
used to the sudden change. "You are very smackable."
"If you were someone else, I might consider that an invitation." But
Meledei was like a niece or a little sister.
"Don't get any ideas, buddy." Meledei laughed and shook her head. "I
should probaby let you get to work. Faranth knows you have enough to
do - just make sure you take breaks."
"You too, Mel. I know how hard you work."
"Not as hard as you do. Speaking of work, I should get back to my
own. Catch you later?" Meledei turned and began to walk backwards in
the other direction, back toward the Weyr proper, her eyes on the
Weyrleader.
"Yeah. Come drag me away from the hides if I'm still out here by
dinner." He shifted the stack in his arms. He could _probably_ get
them done before then.
"I'll bring the rope." Meledei gave N'vanik a salute then turned to
hurry to the records room. They both had work to do...she just
couldn't do hers outside. Ah well.
