"And how is my wife this evening?" Zathris leaned over to plant a
kiss first upon his wife's forehead, then his sons'. He smiled down
at them, enjoying the scene that laid so neatly out in their room.
"Fine," she smiled up at Zathris. Zathan added some sort of blare of
recognition and she chuckled as his limbs stiffened in excitement.
"Well, he certainly knows who you are."

"I would hope so. I talked to them both while they were inside you
enough that I would think they'd recognize me right off." Of course,
Zathris didn't know if babies_could_ hear until they were born, but

he liked to think they could. The Lord Holder reached down and picked
up Zathan. "Only fine?"

She smiled softly at the sight of her husband holding his son. "I'm
sure they do," she said. "But they also recognize you now just from
hearing your voice and seeing you every day." She'd walked over to
lean against him and watch their son.

"I'm glad about that. I'd hate for them to not recognize me. Might
make me feel rejected." Zathris grinned and tickled his son lightly.
"So Karhal approached me with an interesting idea today."

Benani chuckled at her husband, he certainly could make her laugh.
"Oh," she questioned as she tickled little feet. "What kind of idea?"

"Karhal suggested using canines in a way I'd never thought about
before." The Lord Holder settled down beside his wife. "I thought
his idea had merit."

"Really?" Benani tilted her head. It wasn't all that often Zathris
shared his work with her but when he did she was all ears."What kind
of idea?"

"As guards in a sense. We're going to meet and he's going to give me
a demonstration." Zathris settled the baby in his arms, the gesture
at ease on him.

"Oh? That_is_ interesting," she said.

"And cost effective. If Karhal is able to do as he says he can, we'll
have a source of guards that costs less than whers and their
handlers." Not that whers were ineffective, but canines would have
their advantages.

"So what are you thinking their advantages would be?"

Zathris laughed. "Are you reading my mind woman?" He shifted his son
then handed him back so he could take the other twin. "It sounds like
they can be trained fairly quickly, more than one person can handle a
canine, and they tend to be less expensive to procure and easy to
breed."

She took the wiggly bundle from him and laughing made faces for his
benefit. They did try to make sure the boys got equal time with both
parents. Maybe it was because of her own upbringing. She'd rarely
gotten to see her own father alone. There had always been a pack of
siblings around, even if some of them were adults by the time she came
around.

"Is he going to train one for us to see how they work out?"

"Yes. Actually, he's going to give a demonstration. It was supposed
to be a couple of sevendays ago, but some things have kept me busier
than I liked. I've had to reschedule." Zathris glanced over at his
wife. Would you be interested in watching?"

"Oh yes," she smiled. She'd been feeling a little out of the loop. Not
that her husband included her in all his decisions. Far from it. But
he had shred some of his work with her, at least until the boys had
come and she'd had to maintain bed rest for months. "I'd like that."

"Good. We'll meet soon. I'll send you word." Zathris shifted the
baby in his arms. "Enough talk about work. I think it's time to
simply relax with my family."

She smiled up at him. "I think that is a very good idea."
