Description: Ground drills and bored dragonets
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 10 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Liftuth
Garreth was bored. The weyrlings were outside working on ground drills
and those dragonets that were awake were watching them. That's what
Garreth was supposed to be doing anyway. Yawning widely, he looked up
at the adult dragons lounging on the rim or on weyrledges and sighed.
:} Are you almost done, Mine? I am hungry ... or are you hungry ... I
can not keep it straight right now ... are you almost done? :{
Z'hren grimaced when Garreth continued to chatter about nothing. He
missed his step and tripped into the girl in front of him. "Oh! Sorry,
Naevyn. Are you all right?" he asked as he continued the steps that
were definitely seeping into his subconscious.
"That's okay," Naevyn stammered softly. "Did I go to slow? I do that
sometimes. I'm sorry." It didn't once occur to the girl it was Z'hren
who'd made the mistake. It did occur to her young green, though, and
Eslith prodded her lifemate gently. }:You were doing just fine, Mine.
No need to apologise.:{ Turning to Garreth, she added a }: Right,
Garreth?:{
Z'hren was stunned that she took on the miscalculation but then he
should have remembered. He'd heard that she often did that, a
deflection of sorts to keep the peace as it were. "Oh stop that, you
did absolutely nothing wrong. It was all me and my incredibly annoying
brown at the moment," he said and sent a loving glare to his lifemate.
:} Of course. Mine has two left feet since the beat is usually
opposite of the way he needs to walk. Mine finds Yours very pretty :{
Garreth answered his sister without thinking that it may confuse her.
He was so used to the music in his lifemate's thoughts that he thought
everyone had music in their heads.
The young brownrider blushed and carefully watched Naevyn to see if
her green would relay what Garreth had said.
}:What beat?:{ Eslith asked curiously, not bothering to comment on the
other young dragon's second statement, as she fully agreed with him.
Her rider was the prettiest human alive, she was sure of that.
Naevyn mirrored Z'hren's blush, but for a different reason. "I
apologise too much, don't I?" she asked softly as she continued her
steps, only just refraining from adding "I'm sorry".
Garreth cocked his head slightly as he waited for the music in his
lifemate's head to start up again. Once it did, he hummed the melody
for Eslith, the tip of his tail lifting and falling to the beat. }:
That is what is most prominent in Mine's head so it interferes with
the steps. We will have to work on that :{
The blush eased as Garreth relayed that the green didn't mention the
pretty comment. Z'hren coughed lightly as the group was called to a
stop for a rest and he asked, "Would you like to sit with Garreth and
I for a moment? And yes, you do apologize often but I'm thinking it's
more of a habit now, right?"
}:That is certainly quite odd..:{ Eslith commented in amazement. She
tried to listen more carefully if she could hear something similar in
Naevyn's mind, but came up with nothing. }:Do all humans have that? I
can't hear it in Mine.:{
"Oh, sure," Naevyn nodded, moving to take a seat next to her green,
who was chatting with Garreth anyway. "And it really is, I guess. Old
habits are hard to break, right?" Habits formed out of
self-preservation even more so, she figured.
Garreth looked over at Naevyn then at Z'hren, still hearing the beat
in his mind. }: I thought they all did but apparently not. Interesting
... :{ the brown said as he settled more comfortably next to his
clutchsister.
"They certainly can be," Z'hren answered with a small smile. "I used
to hum out loud ... a lot. My sister would slap me on the back of the
head every time I'd start. I wouldn't suggest that kind of breaking.
Have you noticed a change since you've Impressed?
}: I didn't realise anyone did. :{ Eslith replied, just as curious. }:
Maybe we should ask around. See who else does and doesn't. Maybe it's
a boy-girl thing? :{ The green loved the challenge of this little
puzzle.
Naevyn considered his question carefully for a moment,. "I guess..."
she said slowly, not quite sure of herself. "I don't know. Do you
think impressing can change habits like that?" If that was true, maybe
she would be able to break that habit as her bond with Eslith grew. It
was quite an appealing thought.
}: You know, I do not know if anyone else does. We *should* ask! :{
Garreth bugled softly and turned to see if any of their clutchmates
were nearby.
Tilting his head slightly after she'd answered, Z'hren said, "Yes,
actually I do think habits can change. My father used to tell me that
he was notorious for talking in his sleep as a child but once he'd
impressed, he never said a word unless he was particularly stressed.
Of course, it didn't happen overnight ..."
Garreth's bugle had him looking around with a frown. "What are you doing, Gar?"
}: Eslith and I want to find out if any other two-legs have music in
their heads ... like you :{
Dark eyebrows rose in surprise and he glanced at Naevyn. "DId you know
they want to find out if anyone else has music in their head?" he
asked before bursting out laughing.
"Then maybe there is hope for me yet!" Naevyn said with a grin. "And
no, I didn't. You have music in your head?" Naevyn wished she was good
at music sometimes, she really admired harpers for being able to
create such beauty.
}: There's Liftuth Let's ask him. :{ Eslith said eagerly as she
spotted a blue brother not too far away. }: Liftuth! Come over here
for a moment? :{
"I am constantly working on new songs, yes. Have you ever noticed that
everything we hear is musical? There's a rhythm to everything," he
said with a slight shrug.
Garreth looked over to the blue and bobbed his head. }: Yes, come
here. We have a question for you. :{
}: What is it now? :{ came Liftuth's annoyed response. He wasn't too
keen on silly distractions and he had come to learn rather quickly
that most of his sibling's questions were silly.
"A rhythm to everything?" Naevyn asked. "Even to... doing the dishes?"
she asked, coming up with the most boring task she could think of.
Garreth wasn't too happy with Liftuth's response but gallantly kept
his thoughts to himself. He didn't want to upset Eslith by berating
the blue but he would set him straight if his brother continued his
rudeness. }: We wish to ask if Yours has music in his head :{
Settling back on his elbows, Z'hren smiled. "Oh yes, even dishes. Just
imagine the sounds ... lower the plate in the water with the soft
ripple of the water, reach in to grasp the scrubber with the gentle
pop of bubbles, circle the plate to the beat of the water hitting the
edge of the tub, lift it to hear the patter of drops then rinse and
set in the drainer where it continues the slow beat," he said, filling
in the empty spaces with extra beats. He whistled the imaginings he'd
conjured and found the song rather interesting.
The brown turned to listen before bespeaking his siblings. }: See?
Like that ... :{
Naevyn's jaw dropped a little in amazement. "Wow, I had never
considered that," she said with an appreciative smile. "I shall
remember that for next time."
}: Like what? :{ Liftuth asked, not remotely curious. He hadn't been
paying attention to what the /humans/ were saying.
Setting his hand on his chest and bowing his head to her, Z'hren
grinned as he memorized the tune he'd just whistled. "Anytime,
m'lady."
Garreth exhaled loudly in annoyance at his brother. }: The whistling,
did you not hear it? :{ He looked at his sister and shifted into a
more comfortable position. }: His obviously does not hear music or he
would not have asked 'what' :{
"Maybe you can help me find some music in my assignments sometime
too," Naevyn giggled. When she noticed the class was moving on again
her blush returned. "I guess we should start paying attention again."
}: So not everyone hears music in their heads and Mine is not weird
for not hearing it, right? :{ Eslith asked.
"I suppose we should," Z'hren replied with a smile as he stood and
offered her a hand up. "And I'll be happy to help you find the
music." It was a pleasure speaking with Naevyn and his look said as
much.
}: Your lifemate is not weird and do not let anyone say otherwise :{
Garreth answered with a gentle nuzzle.
Taking his hand, Naevyn heaved herself to her feet. "Thanks," she said
with an honest smile. He made her feel a whole lot less shy and the
thank you was as much for that as for his offer.
}: Good. I knew that. :{ the young green rumbled happily, letting the
brown nuzzle her, before turning her attention back to the exercise.
