N'vanik smiled when he saw his next visitor. "Hey Meledei."
Meledei slid into a chair next to N'vanik's bed and returned the
smile. It had been a shock to hear that their Weyrleader had gotten
Scored. Of all the riders, he just seemed...so untouchable. This was
only proof that no one was. "Hey...how are you feeling?"
"My head is killing me, but I'll live." His shoulder was covered in
numbweed so it didn't hurt much.
"They can give you something for that." Meledei pointed out. She
didn't particularly like putting stuff in her body unless she
absolutely had to, but sometimes pain just needed to be dealt with by
using medication.
"I know. My next dose is coming up. Can't imagine how bad it would be
without something to dull the pain." They hadn't been able to use
fellis right away since they didn't want him falling asleep.
"Tell me about it." Meledei hadn't taken fellis after the first day
and a half, though. She just didn't like having something in her body
that affected her so strongly where she couldn't focus properly and
have complete control.
"I should be out of here in a day or so. If it wasn't for my head, I'd
be out of here already." The healers were being cautious, and much as
he didn't like it, he knew it was best to listen to them.
"You have a hard head, they should know that by now." Meledei let a
grin spread over her face. "Besides, it's not like there's anything
to damage in there."
He gave her a mock glare. "I'll get you for that one. Just wait til I
get out of this cot."
Meledei fluttered her eyes and placed a hand against her chest. "What,
you would punish me for being honest?" She clicked her tongue, then
grinned. "You'll just have to catch me first. That's harder than you
think."
"I'm not going to try to outrun you. I'll just wait until you least expect it."
"Better be careful, Elleth might want to eat you." Meledei's grin
broadened. "And you know Loseth wouldn't go against her."
"Unfair advantage," he grumbled.
"Don't hate me because of my dragon." Meledei laughed. "Besides, you
know you wouldn't ever follow through with that threat."
"You just keep thinking that. Then when I dunk you in the lake, it'll
be a surprise." Even though his head was still throbbing, the banter
helped him almost forget it.
"We'll see." Meledei grinned and a twinkle lit up her eyes. "Better
be careful, I might be the one doing the dunking."
"I'll definitely watch out. I know you're trouble." He hadn't been
stuck in the infirmary long, but he already couldn't wait to be
outside enjoying himself again.
"You have _no_ idea how much trouble I can be." On anyone else it
might have sounded like a threat, but it was Meledei who was saying
it. "So only one more day? You sure you shouldn't stay longer?"
"I'd crack my shell if I had to stay here longer. I won't be able to
do much, but at least I can be in my own weyr. My own bed." Once the
healers were sure there weren't complications to his head injury, all
he needed was medication and rest, and he would rest much better at
home.
"That I understand." Meledei had been so glad when she had finally
been able to go home to her own weyr. "I probably shouldn't keep you.
Don't want to tire out - I know old people tire easily."
"If you come a little closer, I think I can still manage to kick you,"
he grumbled.
"Now now, we don't want to aggravate those injuries or possibly injure
something else." Meledei giggled, but then she did move closer and
carefully slid her arms around him so she could give her Weyrleader a
hug. "Seriously, I'm glad you're okay."
He patted her with his good arm. "Me too."
