Jylanya carried a tray as she walked toward the end of the hallway.
Naton was buried in his Mastery project again and while she admired
his zeal in pursuit of his dream she sometimes shook her head at his
neglect of his basic needs... like food. She'd taken it upon herself
to clean his room when he was out of the Hall or teaching a class but
more than that she'd begun to watch when he ate. Which wasn't often
enough by half for the amount of work he did.
"Naton," she called through his half open door.
"Hmm?" Naton barely replied, his eyes glued to the sketches and letter
in front of him. He hadn't really heard who was speaking to him
anyway, or he might have been a little more enthusiastic.
She snorted and shook her head. **Buried in his work again.** Jylanya
used a foot to push the door open enough to slide into the room with
the tray. "Naton," she repeated as she set the tray on his small
dining table across from him.
"Yeah?" Naton said, slowly turned his face away from the sketches.
"Oh, Jylanya!" he seemed genuinely surprised and actually turned his
back to his work for a moment as he looked at the food. "That is
wonderful, thank you!"
"You're welcome, now come eat." She smiled and shook her head. "And
you are not eating at your desk."
"Ah, Jyls, I just need to finish this up real quick," Naton said,
looking at her with big puppy eyes. The problem was bugging him and he
knew that if he just worked on it a little longer... the answer might
come to him.
"And meanwhile your food gets cold?" She tilted her head with an 'I
don't think so' look.
"I can take a few bites while I finish this," Naton started, looking
back at his work longingly before giving in and moving over to the
table. "You drive a tough bargain, lady," he grumbled.
She slid into the seat next to him with a smile. "Someone has to keep
you in line or you'd waste away to nothing and the pod won't recognize
you."
"All this bulk and muscle?" Naton joked. "I can't really see that
happening." Still, he hungrily dug in to his meal. After the first
bite, he had to admit food was a mighty fine idea. "How was your day?"
he asked between bites.
She chuckled. He really did have plenty of muscle to throw her around
the bedroom quite nicely. She'd been more concerned about him getting
sick if he didn't eat properly. "Fine," she said softly watching him
devour the food like a canine. "How's your project coming?"
"It's coming along," Naton said with a nod, trying not to get
overenthusiastic right away. "I mean, there's still quite some
tweaking to do before it will live up to the Masters' expectations...
But I really think it will be brilliant." And that conviction showed
in his eagerly sparkling eyes.
"I'm sure they'll find it's brilliant too," she was his biggest fan
and supporter in his bid for Master's knots. "I just don't want you to
neglect your health in the process."
"Well, as long as I've got you to look after me, I'm sure I will be
fine," Naton said, looking at her with a happy grin. He really had
everything he wanted in life, now, didn't he? If only Deet had been
here to see it, things would be even more perfect.
She smiled as she watched him eat. "You still need to break away from
time to time," she said softly. "Why don't you come have dinner with
Vee and me tonight? About the time you have to turn on the lights,
you get up and come to my rooms."
"That does sound tempting," Naton said, looking from Jylanya to his
work and back. "And I guess I could use a break every now and then.
Thanks, Jyls." He paused for a moment to stuff his mouth again and
chew. After swallowing he looked at Jylanya a bit hesitant. "I'm not
being too much of a bother, am I?"
"Don't worry," she said softly. She'd spent most of her adult life
taking care of someone. First her parents then a querulous and
ungrateful elderly person who happened to be her husband. Caring for
someone who actually cared back or even cared how she felt about it
was a completely different thing. She hadn't resented her lot in life
prior to Dolphin Hall but her lot had changed considerably for the
better. For the first time in memory, she was truly happy. Vee and now
Naton were a big part of that change. She put a hand on his arm.
"You're no bother at all."
"Alright, as long as you feel that way, I would love to swing by,"
Naton said after pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I will see you
tonight."
