Cyradis

Cyradis had been evaluating Meledei as they'd been working together
and she could tell that she'd not had much one on one training but
she'd managed to 'figure out' a great deal. Best of all the girl had a
head on her shoulders. A few Turns of maturity and she would be a
strong and competent 'second for the Weyr. Her organizational skills
were strong and all she really needed was some guidance in in a few
areas.

**My dear. Can you please request Elleth's comes to my office?**

}:Elleth? Mine would like to see yours if she is free.:{

Elleth passed along the message. [[Tell her I'm on my way.]] She
didn't mind an interruption to hidework. Sometimes it got a bit
tedious and breaks helped to dispel the monotomy.

It wasn't far trip to the goldrider's weyr and Meledei knocked upon the
door when she arrived.

Cyradis was expecting the young gold rider so just called out. "Come
in," and waited with a smile for the girl to open the door.

"Hello Weyrwoman." Meledei slipped through and closed the door behind
her before she covered the distance across the room and to the desk.
"You wanted to see me?"

"I did," she said. "We have a tithe train coming in today so I thought
you could see how we handle the holders." Of course the actual tithe's
were Qorri's responsibility once they arrived. But the holders
themselves were the Weyrwoman's. "Do you think you have time to stay
with me this afternoon?"

"Sure." Not that Meledei would deny the Weyrwoman even if she would be
'too busy'. "Actually, that sounds like it could be interesting. I've
never relaly done anything like that before."

"Excellent," smiled Cyradis. "I also have an ulterior motive. I'm
gathering some information I'll need some help with that too. Your
bronzerider is a trained smith if I remember, yes?"

"Yes, that's right." Cyradis was paying attention - but, Meledei
guessed, it was probaby something she did with every bronzerider.
"What do you want me to do?"

"Well," she said with a conspiratorial smile. "We are going to start
planning for some work on the Weyr. I have an idea that I want to
implement. But we have lots contacts to make. If R'enh has any
contacts at the Smith Hall, specifically with Technicians I'd like to
know. We're going to put in some electricity."

Now that took Meledei aback. After all, Cyradis was new to the Weyr
and with the sudden departure of Janani, Meledei had to admit she was a
little disillusioned. That idea, however, sounded more long term - did
that mean Cyradis might actually_stay_ around? "Really?"

"Yes really," she nodded. "It's going to take awhile but I think we
can do it." She pulled a few hides out of the way and then shoved the
one she'd been looking for toward the young goldrider. "This weyr was
built quickly under pressure of the return of Thread. We're finally
getting up to strength and now we'll have the time to add what they
left out." She tapped the hide with her initial list. "We're going to
have to work with Qorri to supplement this list and prioritize it.
Then we'll have to plan each stage."

"Yes, I remember." Meledei had been young, but those memories were
clear. "This is going to be a really big job. Dolphin Cove doesn't
have any sort of technology like this." But that didn't mean it
_couldn't_.

"Well, we've got a bit of refrigeration in the lower caverns for food
preservation but that's it. Have you ever been down there in the
kitchen during the day? It swelters." Their kitchen staff did most of
the cooking at night after things were cooled a bit. "And there are so
many other things."

"Yeah, I have." Meledei tended not to linger in the kitchens for that
very reason. "This isn't going to be an overnight thing. How long do
you think this will take?"

"Oh at least a turn or more." She looked toward the ceiling. "I mean,
wouldn't it be grand if the air actually_moved_ in here during the

hottest part of the day?" Inside the cliff rooms it was considerably
cooler than the outside but with fans they could cool the rooms just
with movement of the air like a light breeze had found its way into
the cliffs.

"Yes, it would be nice." Meledei did have to admit it got rather
stuffy and when it was humid - which was often - it was even worse.
"I don't think it's a bad thing, I'm just trying to imagine it."

Cyradis smiled and pulled her notes closer. "Ok, on to the next thing.
I'd like you to start taking the wing meeting on the day after
restday. I'll be there to back you up," she added quickly. "And you'll
lead the drills that day. I'll take the 'second's role." She didn't
want to scare the girl but soon she was going to be ready to lead the
wing in a Fall. But there was no point in sharing that quite yet.

"Me?" Meledei had two surprises in one day from the same person.
"Sure but...are you sure?" It was a lot of responsibility, that was
certain, even if Cyradis was going to be there. Still, Meledei also
knew she'd have to do it sooner or later. Evidently, Cyradis thought
sooner was better than later.

"I'm sure," she said in exactly the same tone she'd heard from her own
mentor so many turns ago. She'd been a knot of nerves the next day but
her voice had seemed sure and strong when she'd called out the
maneuvers they'd planned. "You can do this."

"All right then. I'll do it." And Meledei was going to pour over the
details just to make sure she got it right. This was a chance to prove
that she could do something like this and she didn't want to let anyone
down.

Cyradis mentally smiled **good girl.** She had high hopes for the
young gold and her rider. They were proving to be competent and
learned quickly. Her acting 'second' Jyramikah was clearly not
interested and doing the bare minimum to get by. No, she had high
hopes for this one.
