Merlish wrung her hands slightly as she waited for her husband to come
home. She had decided to try to put the plan she had started for form
at Black Rock into action. As his wife, it was her duty to take care of
his health, as his sister had reminded her, and she definitely needed to
stop eating all the heavy, fatty foods he seemed to enjoy so much. Her
making her special ovine salad for dinner was a start. She just hoped
he would not be disappointed in her.

She started slightly when she heard the doorknob, quickly pulling at the
strings of her apron. The moment of truth! "Good evening, husband.
You must be hungry."

"Good evening, Merlish. How was your day? Yes, I'm starving," Eilomar
greeted, and actually gave her peck on her cheek after taking off his
clothes.

"Oh, well, I made you a special treat today," she said, trying to sound
especially excited. "I've always wanted to make this for you, husband.
It's a very special recipe and one of my favorites. But..." This time
she let her worry shine through in her eyes. She knew he always seemed
to want to protect her from the harsher things, and this was what she
was counting on right now! "But, I'm afraid you might not like it."

"A food I don't like?" Eilomar sounded puzzled. Was there a food he
did't like? He didn't remember ever encountering a one.

"Well, I don't know, husband. I've never seen you eat this, so..." She
brought over a large platter covered in vegetables - leafy greens,
roasted tomatoes, onions and mushrooms topped with thin slices of young
ovine. "I made fresh garlic bread to go with it," she quickly added.
It was one of her favorites, but she held her breath as she held it out
for him to see and smell.

"Garlic bread sure sounds good. It's just for starters, right?" Eilomar
said and added hopefully. It did seem to him like typical starter for
those fancy feast dinners.

Merlish let her face fall. "Well, I made some roasted potatoes as a
side, but... This is the main dish. Are you displeased?"

Confused was perhaps the correct word to descripe Eilomar's feelings.
"Well, I'm hungry, so let's just eat it," he said with resigned sigh.

"You are not happy," his young wife said, real tears welling up in her
eyes. Perhaps she had misjudged the situation. Was he really angry and
just not showing it? Would this be her one and only chance, and had she
failed? Was she just going to have to resign herself to this unhealthy
life?

Eilomar really didn't know how to react to a weepy wife. Puting his
jacket back on and returning to the hall crossed his mind. Perhaps he would
run
into an apprentice who was up to no good, so he could yell at him...
Except the apprentices were still in Dolphin Cove weyr.

"Stop that, you're not making any sense. It' just food, for Faranth
sake," Eilomar said with irritated tone.

Merlish bit her lip before a true sob could escape her. As it was, her
hands shook as she set the plate down on the table and began to serve
salad onto his plate. The tears were falling, more so now that she was
trying to stop them, until finally she just whispered a shuddering, "I'm
sorry," and ran from the room, holding her hands to her eyes. He was
angry with her for the first time, and she felt utterly foolish and at a
loss as to what to do. She wished her mother was there.

"Women," Eilomar huffed, and not knowing what else to do, just sat down
the table and started eating.
