Briata bent over the cloth in her lap. The colors were bright,
twinkling with their own internal glow as the light hit them. The
project was nearing completion - she only had four more blocks to go
before she would put it all together. Since the embroidery would be
done, that would be the quickest part and she'd probably finish within
a sevenday after the last block was finished. The question was,
however, would she finish before the baby was born?
The room was empty and silent so it was obvious when footsteps
marked the entrance of someone into one of the weaver rooms. Briata looked
up and a smile formed instantly upon her lips. "Weyrwoman," she
greeted, "How are you?"
"Oh just fine and dandy. The better question is-how are you?" Rhosyn
was in fine fettle. With Lenala's gold sorted out and eggs happening,
she didn't have to worry about any of that. In the back of her mind, though,
she was thinking it had been awhile since she'd seen Briata and she ought
to make sure everything was progressing there. Finding an empty seat, she
made it known she was going to visit, but that Briata didn't have to stop what
she was doing.
"I am very well, thank you." Briata straightened up and shifted the
cloth. It spread over the swollen belly, a perfect resting place while
she worked. "Keeping busy."
"How much longer will it be now?" she asked casually as her eyes
took in just how much larger Briata was. The girl seemed healthy so that was
good. She was sure Y'gel had her seeing the healers when she needed to.
The Records had indicated abilities like Briata's could be hereditary in
Bloodlines. Rhosyn was secretly hoping that might be true.
"I'm due around the end of the month." Time had flown by and Briata
had to admit it surprised her that she was so close. Where had the
time gone? She supposed it had helped to keep herself occupied. "So
not too much longer."
"Have you chosen a name?" That was a curious question and Rhosyn half
wondered if Briata had talked it over with Y'gel or if she had just chosen a
name on her own. As it was, this had to be different from what the young
former holder had envisioned for her first child.
"No." Briata supposed she should have chosen a name by then, most
would have. "I thought I would wait and see what suited the child."
Sometimes a name picked out beforehand just didn't fit.
"Hmmm that's fair enough. And how is Jewel?" She didn't see
the gold firelizard but that didn't mean she wasn't somewhere nearby.
Rhosyn remembered their last conversation and had already spoken to a few
folks about possible eggs.
"She's fine, currently flirting with a bronze outside." Briata knew
what that meant. It meant there would be eggs again soon. "I'm sure
she'll be glad to know you asked about her." A smile quirked over her
mouth.
"So many think they're good pets. And if it means a little goodwill toward
the Weyr..." She didn't finish the sentence, just smiled. "I hear they hum
like the dragons do when a baby is coming."
"Yes, they do. It's rather musical in quality. A higher pitch than the
dragons, but still the same intent." Briata had found it endearing and
it merely solidified the fact that dragons and firelizards were
related. "When an egg I gave to a friend hatched, Jewel and several
other firelizards formed a chorus."
"Hmmm..." Rhosyn still didn't want to bother with one but it did mean an
advanced warning system for Briata's labor was in place. That was good.
Y'gel probably knew to look for that. "Are you sore any now? The healers
say that can happen. Soreness and swelling."
"No, I'm actually feeling quite well. No soreness, no swelling."
Briata's pregnancy had been easy compared to what she had heard
from others. She hadn't gotten sick, just very tired and had taken
to sleeping as much as possible until she was a few sevendays into
the pregnancy and her energy returned. "I know I'm fortunate."
"Hmm well if there's anything I can do, let me know. When do you think
you'll have to go on light duty?" Of course Briata could still draw, even
if she was in bed most of the time, but Rhosyn understood rest was
important.
"I'll certainly take some time off." Briata still wasn't sure what she
was going to do about her craft - she hadn't yet come to a decision.
"I'm not sure about after that, however. And thank you for the offer -
it's very much appreciated."
"I'll leave you be then but it seems you're doing fine. Can't wait to
find out what the name is." Rhosyn got up and winked, then with an odd
look that meant she was speaking with Orlaith, she turned to go. "Have a
good day, Briata!"
