For some time now, Z'hren had been thinking about getting Ernola a
flit egg. He spoke to Meledei about it ages ago ... okay, it wasn't
that long ago but it felt like it with Impress and all. So it wasn't
all that surprising that as his eyes glanced about the room, he
spotted the gold flit on a familiar shoulder.
With Garreth tucked in for the night, Z'hren was able to have a
relaxing dinner for once and after he'd gotten some food, he made his
way over to stand beside the greenrider he'd recently met while
bathing his brown. "Hello, Tavia. Would you mind if I sat with you?"
Tavia had just cut a piece off of her meat and put it up to the side
of her face for Glory to take. If she didn't do that every once in
awhile the gold would try to snatch what was on her fork. "Hello," she
smiled at the young rider. She was rather used to the attention the
gold flit brought at times. "Sure, go right ahead."
Grinning at the pair as he sat down, Z'hren reached for his klah and
took a sip before saying, "I wanted to thank you for your help with
Garreth. He's finally stopped pestering me about porcine." He
chuckled a bit into a meatroll. "I didn't know you had a flit ... and
a beautiful little lady she is."
"Oh thanks," she stroked the little gold's eye ridge with a finger.
"And you're welcome," she said. "They're just so inquisitive and yet
you have to explain things over and over since they don't always
remember what you've told them." She chuckled. "Did you finally feed
him one?"
"I did and he hated it at first. But I continued and he now loves
it," Z'hren chuckled again as he shook his head. "He's the weirdest
dragon I've ever known." He watched the little gold, unable to keep
his eyes off her for more than a few seconds and he blushed when he
caught himself staring too long.
She couldn't help but see him looking at her little friend. "She's
still pretty young. Just had her first flight."
The bite he was about to take was paused at her words. He was excited
about the possibility of getting an egg but felt unworthy of even
asking. Why would she give a weyrling an egg from her first clutch?
"Truly? And how did she do? I mean ... was it a good flight?" he
asked, clearing his throat as he blushed lightly.
"Well, I think she did." Tavia smiled at the young man. "From the
images I got, she picked a brown. So, there may not be a large clutch
but I'll need to find homes for them. I mean, I think she's enough for
me." With Sawauth and Kaiavin she couldn't see herself taking on any
more flits. "Do you know anyone who might want one?"
Nearly choking on the bite he finally took, Z'hren again cleared his
throat and grinned. "Boy do I! Me ... well, not me but for my sister
who's here in the Weyr. She's a Harper apprentice and since she gave
up Standing in order to stay in her craft, I thought a flit would be
perfect for her. So ... could I? I'll do anything for you ..." he
rambled out quickly, for once losing his usual calm demeanor.
Tavia chuckled at his reaction. "I'll be sure to contact you then,
when they're ready that is. Does that sound good? Oh, you'll need a
pot or something to keep it nice and warm."
"Okay, I'll find one. This should be interesting ... having Garreth
keep a secret! I'm going to have to keep them separated," he said as
slowly and evenly as he could to lower his racing heart. Calculating
the time in his head, he realized he had no idea about the gestational
cycle of flits. "Roughly how long will it take?"
"They're a lot like dragons so she should clutch any day from how
heavy she's getting. I have to carry her everywhere," Tavia rubbed her
little queen with affection. "So, I imagine once they've hardened
they'll be ready for you."
Wolfing down a few more bites of his stew as she answered, Z'hren
bobbed his head in understanding. Swallowing loudly, he said,
"Excellent, thank you so much, Tavia. I owe you."
"Oh sure," she smiled. "I don't know how willingly she'll part with
them but we'll make it happen for your sister." Truthfully she'd been
afraid at first that he wanted it for himself and that would be just
too difficult with a young dragonet. She would have had to refuse him
or have him get permission first. This way it was going to a young
harper. Over all she was pleased by the idea.
Feeling Garreth waking, Z'hren sighed then burped softly. "Oh ...
excuse me. Garreth is waking so I'd better get going. Thanks again,
Tavia!" he said as he reached over to offer the last of a meatroll to
Glory. His sister was going to be so surprised.
