Description: The greenrider meets a new Weyr resident.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 8, day 14 of Turn 6
Bahji sat in her small corner, her fingers stroking the pile of flexible reeds beside her.
The hustle of the weavers? craft area didn?t seem to phase the girl; she was
mostly left alone, except for the occasional comment thrown her way. Most of
the weavers were still getting used to the sight of the blind girl and her
baskets. She didn?t mind; she was happy for the company, though she did find
it a little humorous that they really didn?t know what to make of her. She
felt eyes on her and her blank eyes twinkled in good humor as she picked up
a reed and with dexterous fingers braided into the base she had already
started. It would be a fishing basket, she decided. With a good, sturdy
handle. She nodded to herself as she laid her hand on the pile of reeds,
searching for one with the length she wanted.
D?lorn had come down to meet a friend for lunch. The greenrider was
notorious for giving them scraps of fabric from tunics and things he had
worn out to where they couldn?t be mended.
This time, he didn?t have a scrap bag as he walked slowly into the weavers?
work area, looking around for his friend. Getting a bit too close to the
girl, he quietly apologized as he waited.
She had heard the footsteps, but hadn?t paused in her work. Instead she
tilted her head in the voice?s direction and smiled. ?It?s okay. Do you need
help with something?? She slid another reed into the forming basket,
fingers tucking and weaving it tightly into place. ?Perhaps I can help?
"Ah I was just meeting a friend for midday meal. Apparently, he's taking his
time about it. What's that you've got there?" As a rider, he had seen many
people with different injuries throughout his time. Some of them had been
blinded so he didn't react to her injury once he noticed there was something
off about her.
While he spoke, she ghosted her fingers over the basket, feeling out the
emerging texture. She nodded to herself and wove another reed into the
basket. ?Oh? Who is your friend?? She stretched out her hand, searching
through the reeds to find one of just the right flexibility. ?This? Oh. It?s
a basket for fish. I?ve made many of them. May I ask who you are??
"Waiting on Xornis, and I'm D'lorn, green Villith." He left out his rank
since in this case, it didn't matter much. As it was, he was more
fascinated with what she was doing and how. If he could do riding
straps like that...it would be great. "You?"
"I don't think I've met her yet." Bahji smiled again. "A pleasure to meet
you, D'lorn. My name is Bahji." Her eyes twinkled. "No rank, not a rider,
obviously. Just a student. The weavers let me sit here with them and make my
baskets and occasionally try out a small loom. It's good company." She
tugged on the sides of the basket, testing it's strength before she added
yet another reed. "I'm sure your friend will be along soon."
Xornis was a man, but he didn't correct her since it didn't matter much. "So
you don't have craft rank then? Hmmm how long have you been here? I
don't think I've come across you before..." Of course he would have
remembered if he had.
"No, I'm limited in what I can do." Her lips quirked. "But I do like what I
do. It serves a purpose and I suppose that's the most important part."
She felt over the sides of the basket, satisfied with the emerging
texture pattern. "About five sevendays, I think. The days run together.
I've been here off and on, and you may have seen me, but I'm not very
noticeable, I think."
"Where did you come from, if you don't mind me asking...and why come
here?" Curious, D'lorn liked to hear stories. Peoples' lives were
fascinating sometimes and the trader in him caused him to connect to
the differences in others'.
"I lived at Sunstone Sea Hold, actually." She smiled slightly, but there was
a hint of sadness in her expression that couldn't be denied. "After I lost
my sight, my parents thought that coming here would give me a chance to
do something other than be pitied. They wanted me to be happy and they
thought the Weyr was the best chance I had." She reached for another reed,
then paused, laying her hand down as she cleared her throat and her brows
furrowed. She missed her parents deeply, but had tried not to think of it.
She shook her head and picked up another reed, then spoke simply. "I'm
adapting."
"Really? Usually holders never send their children to the Weyr..." D'lorn
stopped himself then. Perhaps that was the story Bahji told herself. The
holders were probably trying to get rid of their disabled child who would
just be a burden to them. The greenrider didn't think that way, but
traderfolk were different. "Glad to hear you like it. Have you met any
friends?"
Her brows raised. "Most holders don't have blind daughters either." She
spoke a bit sharply, then shook her head with a sigh. "I could have chosen
to stay. I didn't. It was my choice." She slid a reed into place and
frowned.
"Not really. I tend to make people uncomfortable." She shrugged. "It's
normal."
"Lord Corowal of Emerald Falls has a blind daughter and one who is deaf, I
hear." It probably didn't reassure her, but it was something to note. D'lorn
never considered there might be something faulty with the man's line for
something like that to occur, but it might be possible. "Riders see all
sorts
of injuries and problems so I suppose we aren't as uncomfortable hm?"
Bahji listened with interest but she didn't know the other blind girl,
so while she was interested, it didn't mean much to her. "This isn't
an injury. I was born with sight. There is just something
wrong with my eyes." She shrugged her shoulders and lay
down her reeds to give him her full attention. "As for riders,
I wouldn't know. I don't know that many. " Her lips quirked a bit.
"I don't see their injuries at all."
"Well maybe you should meet some then dear. Can you find your way around
the Weyr at all?" With the labyrinth of tunnels, it might be hard for her
and easy to get lost despite the best sense of navigation.
Bahji actually laughed softly. "I've met a few, you included. But it doesn't
mean I know them. You all have busy lives and hardly enough time to
entertain me. Eventually I will." She rolled her shoulders. "I know my
way around areas I need to. The Weyr is much too big for me to
wander around in. " She paused and gave him a dimpled smile. "You're
going to be late for your lunch, you know."
"Oh I see the friend I was waiting for. You know, why don't you join us eh?"
He threw that out there, thinking it might be a way for her to meet at least
one more person. D'lorn was beginning to think it might be good to introduce
this girl to some folks.
"Oh, I wouldn't want to intrude..." She paused and tilted her head. "But,
If your friend is willing, I'd like that."
He saw the other man and there was a short conversation-all done through
gestures. "Okay, hope you're hungry," he invited, waiting for her to leave.
