L'cor

The Steward gave a sigh as he looked at the pile of hides on his desk. It
was not getting any smaller in the slightest, and that seemed to be the perk
of his rank. But one of the other perks was under stewards.

"Lecordin!" he called out. "I need you to take care of these."

The young man in question rolled his eyes as he stood in the outer
office and walked toward the Steward's door. "Yes sir," he called
before he got in sight. He presented himself at the front of the man's
desk for _more_ work the Steward was bound to dump on him. "How can I
help?"

"I need you to check that these tally," Deveker handed over a set of
accounts. "I'm not sure how well our tanner counts, I don't think these
numbers add up." And there was another. "This is a letter that needs copying
for the records here, I need two copies, one for here, and one to go to
Emerald Falls."

Lecordin accepted each of the hides as they were handed to him. He
pasted his usual placid smile on his face as his mother had taught
him. His father might be somebody but he was nobody unless he could
rise high enough to command his fathers respect enough to acknowledge
him. He needed to make his own way in this world, that much he knew,
and that meant doing whatever Deveker needed whenever Deveker needed
it.

"Yes sir," he said with each hand off.

"And this one as well." A final hide was handed over. "It's to do with
tomorrows visit to Emerald Falls, we'll need the groom informing to get the
best pair of runners ready to pull the carriage. I believe our Holder wants
to take his intended on a carriage ride."

"His intended?" He knew the moment the words left his mouth that he'd
overstepped. **Sharddit** He'd been playing his role so very
carefully, never appearing to look above his 'station.' Now he didn't
have a clue as to how the Steward would view his curiosity. So he
quickly cleared his throat hoping Deveker hadn't really heard him.
"I'll make sure the groom is notified immediately sir."

Mentally he started prioritizing his tasks. He'd have to run out to
the stables first. They would want to clean and polish the carriage
inside and out. Then the letter copy for Emerald Falls so it could go
_with_ the groom and the Holder. After that, he'd do another copy for
their records and finally check the Tanner's figures.

"You do that," Deveker ignored the comment. A certain amount of curiousity
was normal. "And Lecordin, before you go."

"Yes sir?" he mentally relaxed just a bit.

"It isn't common knowledge, if I hear rumours around here I'll know where
they came from."

He nodded right away. If anyone knew the value of secrecy he did. It
had been fed to him with his baby food. Even the man in front of him
knew nothing of his true parentage only that his family had friends in
high places. That had been a part of the price his family had paid for
their continued support from his father. He would be acknowledged only
if and when his father chose to do so. He didn't even name the man in
his own mind let alone to anyone else.

"Of course sir," he said with wide eyes and a very serious look on his face.

"Then get to it." Deveker dismissed the young man with those words.

That spurred him into action and he turned to hurry out into the
outside office. Arranging the ledger and hides on his desk he made
some notes on his piece of scratch hide just so he wouldn't forget.
Then he made his way quickly to the stables to talk to the groom.
There was no way Holder Namrien would know anything about the job he
was doing but someday he'd make his mark and that started with
pleasing Deveker.

His mind drifted pleasantly as he hurried toward the stables. He
looked forward to his evening and a visit to a pretty young woman and
her parents.
