Briata

Briata

Blurry eyed, A'shel walked out of the dinning hall. He had been up
early as Himarth had taken ill in the early candlemarks of the night
and then had woken him again this morning wanting to replace what he
had so thoughtfully thrown up. The slender lad felt every bit as
dirty, worn out and smelly as any day as a drudge. But inside was a
different story. Just ahead was a familiar shock of black hair that
he hadn't seen in a long time.

"Briata! Hey, Briata!" He ran up to her, grinning like a fool.

Briata turned at the sound of a familiar voice and her face lit up with
a smile. She reached out to take his hands and gazed over him. Even
though the Impression had been only a little time ago, already she
could see a change. "Good morning A'shel."

"Good morning!" He leaned down to kiss her on the cheeks, noting that
she was smaller than when he had last seen her. Or perhaps he was
growing a bit? Whichever, he was pleased to see her and it showed on
his face.

"Good morning." Briata echoed again and gave her friend a once over.
"You look good Ang. I'm so glad to see you so well."

A'shel blushed and shyly look down at the sand underfoot. "Thank
you...you're looking well too. W-would you want to meet my Himarth?
He's sleeping out under that grove of Fellis trees right now."

"I would love to." Briata hadn't officially met the little dragon,
though she had heard his mind voice when she 'checked in' on him.
"Please, take me to him."

"Oh, great." Grinning, he took her lightly by the hand and led her to
the spot in the sun where Himarth was sleeping with several other
dragons. The morning light shone brightly on his almost silvery blue
hide, making A'shel's heart swell with pride for his beautiful
lifemate.

"He's quite lovely." Briata stated without need to pretend. The blue
was rather pretty, especially with the way the light spread over his
hide. "I knew you would Impress."

"Did you? I didn't have a clue, he had to nudge me on the back of the
leg, I was so busy helping Y'gel..." His voice trailed off as he
remembered that moment.

"I knew." Briata didn't know _how_ she knew, but she just knew, and
she was so very glad. This was what A'shel needed - a dragon. This
was what would help him heal the most. "And you can continue to help
as a dragonhealer, yes?"

"In time, yes, I hope so. I'd love to be just like Y'gel one day..."
In his mind, the dragonhealer was like the father he never had. In an
undertone, he mumbled, "I still can't believe my luck." That day when
he had stumbled, broken and bleeding, to the Weyr seemed to have
happened so long ago, to another boy.

"I can." Briata reached out to place a gentle hand upon the
bluerider's shoulder. "And you deserve him. He deserves you.
Together you will be a fine pair and, I'm sure, you'll be a fine healer
some day."

"I hope...and to think, if it wasn't for you this would not have
happened. You were the one that pushed me to speak to Y'gel and if I
hadn't been there helping then maybe Himarth wouldn't have found me."
He'd come a long long way from that broken drudge of a few months
back.

"You can not give me credit. Himarth wouldn't have chosen you if you
were not worthy." Briata pointed out with a smile. "And you had to
have the courage to actually _do_ it."

"Well...." He blushed and kicked the dust with his foot. "I have to
go now, but do you want to have dinner sometime?" He would love to
catch up with her.

"I would love to." Briata hadn't had a chance to really chat with
An...A'shel in quite some time. "Just let me know when it's convenient
for you."

"Will do!". Already the boy was belting over to the weyrlings'
classroom. "See you!"

"I'll see you later, Ang." Briata waved to him, but A'shel was long
gone. A smile and a shake of her head later, Briata turned to continue
on her own way.
