N'vanik

N'vanik

}:Mine needs to speak to yours,:{ Loseth told Elleth, sadness and
confusion tinging his voice.

Meledei didn't like the sound of Elleth's message from Loseth. Of
course, she immediately stopped what she was doing and headed through
the hallways and to the Weyrleader's office. Once there, she knocked
and then stepped through when given leave. "You asked to see me?" She
offered a small smile, but it did little to lighten the somber mood.

"Have a seat." He waited until she did so. "Janani is leaving."

Meledei sat up straight then froze. This was not what she had expected
at all. "She is? But...but why? She's not been here long at all..."
Had something happened?

"Another Weyr needed an experienced goldrider, and she volunteered.
She's leaving tomorrow morning." He tried to keep the anger out of his
tone. Meledei liked Janani and this had to be hard for her.

"But we need her too!" Meledei didn't mean to raise her voice, it just
happened. She pulled back when she realised it was getting loud and
she shook her head. "I don't understand...it's like she's using that
as an excuse because she doesn't like it here."

"Exactly."

"So she's just abandoning us?" Meledei's voice rose again and she
forced herself to calm down, to try and not get upset. N'vanik didn't
need that, it wasn't like it was his fault. "She's too consumed with
her own personal desires that she's putting herself before the rest of
the Weyr?"

"Yes," N'vanik said through clenched teeth. His anger was rising
again. "If that's how much we mean to her, then I say good riddance."

"I just..." Meledei stopped and shook her head again. She was angry
too, but she wasn't going to start shouting. They would deal with the
situation. They seemed to be able to do that quite well.
"So...acting Weyrwoman will be Cyradis?" Like N'vanik, she knew
Jyramikah was not up for the job - hadn't been since before Meledei had
Impressed. To tell the truth, the youngest goldrider barely saw her.
She, herself, knew she was woefully unprepared for such a big duty -
not even including her age into the factor.

"Yeah, unless I manage to run her off too." He'd certainly done a good
job of angering her so far.

"I don't think you are the one running them off." Meledei sighed. "If
they were, it'd be obvious. This isn't your doing." She was
emphatic. N'vanik had a tendency to take a lot on his shoulders -
including blame for things that were not his fault.

"I can't help thinking if I'd paid more attention to them, this
wouldn't have happened." Maybe Janani wouldn't want to leave, maybe
Traelyn wouldn't have gone crazy.

"N'vanik, you didn't _ignore_ them. It's not like you can spend every
waking day tending to their needs and wants. You have a Weyr to run
and they should know that. If they can't handle it, then they aren't
as strong as we thought they were." Meledei couldn't describe the
depth of her disappointment. Yes, first Traelyn and now Janani. Would
Cyradis do the same? "I guess I'll go meet with Cyradis, find out how
she wants to do things."

"Yeah." He often thought the same thing. "And I'm sorry, Mel. I know
you liked Janani."

"Yeah, well. People sometimes disappoint. I'll just have o take it
and look forward."
