Characters: Rhosyn, Briata
Description: Briata lets Rhosyn know there's going to be another clutch from Jewel to give away.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 7, day 1 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Y'gel
Briata was grateful that Jewel hadn't risen when Y'gel had been
around. She wasn't sure she could go through another situation like
that - not that she had to worry about getting pregnant. She was
already pregnant. And now so was Jewel, though the gold would have her
eggs long before Briata had her babe.
Of course, that meant another trip to the Weyrwoman. So after classes,
the young woman found herself at the door to Rhosyn's office, knocking
upon it.
"Come in, whoever it is." She was beginning to think she could go
cross-eyed if she had to look at another formation diagram. Her little
project was going well with the headwoman and they had managed to
increase trade by getting rid of some of the excess stuff.
"Weyrwoman Rhosyn," Briata called as she stepped inside. She offered a
smile to the woman as she closed the door behind her. "I'm sorry to
bother you."
"Oh no, it's not a bother. I'm just tired." She frowned, thinking a
bath later might help things. Stretching her arms and standing, she
walked around to grab a pitcher of water and pour. Taking a drink, she
hoped it would help. "How are you feeling?"
"Well thank you." Briata inclined her head in a polite gesture to
couple with the vocal thanks. "And you?" It wasn't how she had
imagined the conversation to start, but ah well.
"Things have been a little crazy the past few days. I'll try and get
some rest after dinner. Orlaith says I have to." She gave a rueful
smile. How could she argue? Rubbing her forehead, she brought her head
back up and nodded. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" Offering Briata
some water if she wanted, she continued to drink.
"Jewel has risen and is now heavy with egg. They will be lain soon."
Briata explained.
"Oh, well that's handy. How many do you think there'll be this time?"
She knew as firelizards matured, they usually had more eggs so she
was curious.
"I'm not sure. Ten or so." Briata really had no way of knowing,
though it would most likely be more than her last clutch. "I have a
few I have reserved to send to friends, but the rest will need homes if
the clutch is not small."
"Sure. How many do you need exactly?" She pulled out a logbook that
she used to keep track of firelizard eggs-who gave them to her and who
wanted one as well as who received one. It was an easy way for Rhosyn
to show her favor to Weyr residents or even to foster good relations
with certain holders.
"Five, but I have a feeling she'll have several more beyond that."
Briata eyed the Weyrwoman a moment. "Perhaps you should keep one."
"Me? Oh no. I've got enough to worry about taking care of Orlaith and
myself. I'll ask K'sedel if he had anyone in mind. Perhaps one of the
Master Crafters..." Rhosyn looked down her list to see who had requested
one before.
"Still, they can be quite useful." Jewel was, and she was good
company, especially on really bad nights. Currently the little gold
was asleep, curled around Briata's neck - her favorite napping spot.
"I'll let you know the exact number as soon as she lays them."
"That'll be fine," Rhosyn agreed, leaning back in her seat. "So how are
things going?" She was quite interested in this child as a possible
candidate, though it would also make Y'gel happy and a happy
dragonhealer was good.
"Things are going well, thank you." Briata knew that Rhosyn was
disappointed in her for not standing, but she hoped that the Weyrwoman
wasn't trying to encourage her to do so after the baby was born. She
had no plans to do so. "And with you?"
"Back to flying again which makes me happy, but usually means there's
more to do." Now that the hatching was over, she didn't have to worry
about that aspect of duties for awhile. "Other than that, I have no
complaints."
"I'm sure there's plenty to do when you are _not_ flying," Briata
stated in a good natured tone. A Weyrwoman's work was never done after
all. "I am glad to hear you are well. The weyrlings are a fine bunch."
"Aye K'sedel and I are happy with them. Of course they aren't very far
along just yet, but they seem to be learning without any problems so
far." She was happy for A'shel, though she hadn't spoken to him since
the first month. "So how much more do you have to go in your crafting?"
"I'm only a senior apprentice." Briata knew her knots would say as
much, but she didn't mind answering the question. "I'm...working on a
project, though. I'm hoping it might convince them to promote me."
It was a long shot, but Briata wanted to do it - even if she remained
an apprentice.
"Is it anything I can help with? And for what it's worth, when the time
comes, I'll speak for you." Indeed Briata had managed to almost single
handedly keep her from going naked, though Rhosyn's definition of naked
was different than others'.
"No, this is something I have to do on my own, but I thank you."
Briata smiled and inclined her head. "It may not go anywhere, they may
think it's too early, but I feel like I should at least try."
"Aye, it's always good to try no matter what, better than not at all."
She nodded her head, then yawned. "All right well let me know when Jewel
decides and how many."
"Of course, Weyrwoman. I will." Briata offered a smile, then slipped
out - obviously Rhosyn needed some rest!
