A Surreal Life

Writers: Heather, Jelena
Date Posted: 12th March 2012

Characters: F'aen, Naevyn
Description: F'aen and Naevyn impress to Scarleth and Eslith.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 11 of Turn 6

From the moment word had come to the barracks about the imminent
hatching, Naevyn had felt like she was ready to throw up. She hadn't
expected the hatching to happen already. The girl was certain she
hadn't even learned a fraction of what she was supposed to know, even
though her superiors seemed to think so. Taking long, deep breaths to
steady herself as she pulled the hatching robe over her head, Naevyn
tried to comfort herself with the thought she wouldn't impress anyway,
so there was no need to worry about not being good enough. The dragons
would know that, wouldn't they? Still, walking on to the sands was the
scariest thing she had ever done in her life, even if she was
accompanied by fellow candidates on all sides. Feeling the heat of the
sands through the thick soles of her boots, the girl looked anxiously
at the candidate beside her. "Hey." she whispered nervously.

Glancing sideways at the whisper, Faylenthe shot a little smile to the
girl beside of him, "Nervous Naevyn?" He asked softly. It was odd, for
even someone as adventurous as Faylenthe was even feeling the little
flutters of vtol wings in his stomach. He supposed he wouldn't have
been as nervous if it weren't for the fact that someone, including
himself, could be seriously mauled on the Hatching Sands by the large,
clumsy dragonets. Not only that but the entire Weyr was watching. He
hoped nothing embarrassing happened to _him_.

"Nervous.. scared.." Naevyn said, biting her lip. "You've never stood
before, either, right?" It was only a small comfort to Naevyn that the
candidate beside her was just as inexperienced as she was, because she
was pretty sure that she would still be worse at this then he was.
Still, at least Faylenthe might not laugh at her too hard if she
messed up somehow.

"No, this is my first time... It was kind of a split section
decision." Faylenthe admitted to her. He was a Junior Journeyman
Harper and he'd never been the kind to make long term plans. So after
he'd walked the tables to become a Journeyman he'd made the rash
decision to try Candidacy. He still wasn't sure if this was the right
thing to do; what if he didn't Impress and he was one of the
unfortunate sots left trodding back to the Candidate Barracks without
a dragon? That would be embarrassing.

"I'm sure you'll do great," Naevyn said with a sweet, encouraging
smile. "Are you hoping for a specific colour?" For her, it was pretty
obvious, but she could imagine the boys thought about stuff like that.
Then again, they would probably all want bronzes, right? As she spoke,
her eyes were drawn to the spectacle before them as the first egg
spilled it's contents. "A bronze!" she said breathlessly. "Wow."

Faylenthe barely heard what Naevyn said as he dubiously took in the
sight of the wobbling egg. As the shell split in a small shower, a
gorgeous bronze stepped out. He didn't even have words to describe
what it was like watching a dragon hatch from its egg. Nor could he
later describe the feeling of adrenaline that was coursing through his
veins. He also couldn't force the words to his lips, but he didn't
care what color he Impressed, he just wanted a dragon!

"Look, there's another one! A baby brown!" Naevyn practically squealed
as she noticed another egg spilling it's precious contents onto the
hatching sands. Forgetting all the worries that usually occupied her
every waking thought, for a moment the young girl was free to enjoy
the spectacle to the fullest of her abilities. Gone was the shadow of
insecurity and instead a very enthusiastic young lady was barely
containing her enthusiasm as she bounced on her feet. "I hadn't
thought it would be this.. this beautiful." she stammered in
disbelief.

Faylenthe hadn't thought the Hatching would be so fast paced. Dragons
seemed to be Hatching at an alarming rate in his inexperienced
opinion. He noticed a green dragonet hatch but she was standing near
her egg not moving, her head swaying from side to side as she surveyed
the group of Candidates. Beside of the dragonet other eggs hatched
spilling forth a beautiful blue dragon. **Maybe he'll come to me.** He
thought hopefully.

As more and more dragons hatched, Naevyn had to do her best to keep
herself from spinning around, trying to catch a glimpse of every
hatching dragonet. She soon noticed the first green in the hatching
and drew in her breath as she admired the young green, just standing
there. "Look at her!"

"Yes..." Faylenthe breathed the word even as he felt himself stepping
forward, towards the glistening green creature who's hide was a
perfect shade of an emerald in the sun. He wasn't sure if the dragonet
was looking at him, but it felt as if she would bore a whole through
him with the heat of her whirling gaze. Realizing that he'd stopped
walking and that the dragonet was indeed coming his way, Faylenthe's
heart pounded in his chest. This was the moment, the dragon could keep
walking past him, to her rightful soulmate, her she could choose him
as her own.

}:Breathe, rider, before you faint.:{ The voice was soft and dainty,
with a slight rasp to it that smoldered.

**Scarleth.** The name came to Faylenthe's mind just as if he'd always
known it. The sudden knowledge of the dragon's name astounded the
newly Impressed Weyrling.

As the green headed their way, for a moment hope swelled in Naevyns
chest. But as it soon became clear it was not to her that the
hatchling was headed, but to Faylenthe, she felt herself deflate
again. Yet, she couldn't help but smile in wonder as she saw the
expressions on the boy's face. That had to be the best feeling in the
world, she really couldn't remember ever seeing anyone that happy.
"Congrats." she said softly, though she was pretty sure Faylenthe
wouldn't be paying attention to anything anyone said.

Observing the newly impressed pair, Naevyn didn't realise more greens
had hatched and were heading straight for her as well. It was only as
the tiniest of the three was but a few feet away from her, that Naevyn
gasped in amazement and turned to face her. For the first time in her
life, there was not a doubt in Naevyn's mind, because as she looked
into the little green's whirling eyes, she knew no one could ever take
Eslith away from her. Eslith!

The girl dropped to her knees, but quickly stood up again as she felt
the sand burn. It did not hurt her, though. Nothing could hurt her
now.

}:That's right.:{ sounded the soft, yet confident voice in her head.
And that was all Naevyn needed, for now. The doubts would return,
surely, when the first shock of impression ebbed away, but for now,
nothing stood in the way of the already deepening bond between the new
weyrling pair.

Being herded from the Hatching Sands by some of the Weyrling Staff,
Faylenthe, now F'aen he supposed, smiled over his dragonet at Naevyn
who also had a gorgeous green dragonet by her side, "Can you believe
it?" He called. Just moment before they'd been standing together,
wondering if either of them even had a chance at Impressing, and now
here they were with dragonets of their own.

"No, no, I really can't!" Naevyn replied, though her eyes did not
leave Eslith for a second. "It's a dream, right?" The girl really had
no other explanation. }:No, it's not.:{ Came the soft, yet determined
voice of the young green into her mind. }:Or we would both be
dreaming.:{

F'aen smiled at Naevyn's question, but had to agree with her
astonishment. Looking down at his beautiful, dark green dragonet, he
had to wonder if he was going to wake up at any second and find
himself back in the dark confines of the Candidate Barracks.

}:This is no dream. Now we'll be together always.:{ Scarleth said in a
confident tone, even as they arrived at the feeding area where the
Weyrling Staff were helping the new weyrlings get some food into
their dragonets.
