Description: There are eggs at River Bluff and the Weyrleaders are pleased.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 15 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Lenala, K'deren, Cyradis
It had been a sevenday and a half since Orlaith had become so egg heavy that
she wouldn't fly. The golden queen had been lounging mostly except when it
was time to get bathed and oiled, every inch of her pale hide getting the
best treatment. She was carrying the Weyr's future and Rhosyn, as always, was
determined that she lack for nothing. That afternoon, as the Weyrwoman was
going over some things she needed to talk to Lenala about while the other
goldrider was leading the Wing, she felt her dragon getting up from the ledge.
Ignoring it as usual, she continued to read. Orlaith, however, was focused.
The queen slowly made her way off of the ledge and into the Bowl.
She needed to reach the Hatching Cavern since it would soon be time. Aware
that there were many eyes on her while she made her slow progress,
she was happy that the lights were off. It was dark and cool, but the Sands
were hot and ready to receive her young. Grunting, she made her way in
and then settled down, waiting for the time when she was ready. }:I await
the eggs:{ she told Rhosyn and Nikornath at the same time.
Of course the goldrider stopped what she was doing, grabbed a waterskin, and
then headed down to watch the show. She took her place in the stands
quietly, hoping this went well. With only two breeding queens, they needed
the eggs. She didn't doubt her dragon, though, and the Flight had been a
good one. Now to wait.
"May I join you?" K'sedel called up to where the goldrider was sat.
"Nikornath says Orlaith told him it was time."
She nodded but continued to watch the Sands, even though it was hard to see
in the dark places. There were skylights in places that lit spots. Orlaith
rested, still not moving. Her breathing could be heard easily and her eyes
whirled blue and slow. "She's getting ready." And then the great dragon
moved. She started to move the sands, adjusting them how she wanted. Soon
they would come.
"I asked for some refreshments to be sent up," K'sedel said as he took a
nearby seat. "I told the kitchens to bring some meatrolls and pastries,
something that could keep us going for a little while."
"Thank you." For once, she wasn't focused on food. Instead, she closed her
eyes and went through the bond to feel what Orlaith was feeling. Her body
was shifting and she could feel the pressure. It was building. Moving was
very hard but she got herself into position. And then she started to push.
The first egg arrived without too much effort. "There's one."
"So there is," K'sedel never tired of the sight of eggs appearing on the
sands. And it was the same for almost a candlemark or so, as eggs arrived
one after another. "How many now?"
Rhosyn's eyes travelled along, searching and counting. "I think about
twenty-five." Orlaith was a fast layer, thankfully. And as she saw more eggs
appear, Rhosyn had less to worry about. Of course none of their previous
clutches had had problems so there hadn't been anything to worry over. "K'sedel, do
you like being Weyrleader?" Perhaps the question had come out of nowhere but it was
something she had been thinking about recently.
"I do, yes," he replied, a little distracted as he counted the eggs. "Yes,
that's twenty five out there."
"Do you like being Weyrleader with me?" She didn't turn toward him. Instead,
she kept looking at the eggs but it was a legitimate question. Orlaith
wasn't done, she could feel the straining in the back of her consciousness. The
gold crooned to her eggs as they appeared, welcoming them to the outside world.
"I've had a lot worse Weyrwomen in my time," he replied. "Dream's End was,"
he paused for a moment to think of the appropriate words. "Tough at times,
she thought I'd had K'deren seduce her daughter to get back at her at one
point in time."
**He's had a lot worse, but he didn't say that he liked it** That pricked a
little. Rhosyn tried not to sound too hurt when she asked quietly, "What
hasn't been..good for you?" She would be with him until the next Flight anyway, so
there wasn't any harm in asking. Perhaps she could easily change whatever it was.
She'd never asked before, after all.
"You need to communicate more. I understand you want things done, but share
that with me and the wing leaders."
"Like what?" To be fair, she probably talked with him more than any of the
others, but even then he didn't know everything-not by a long shot. Of
course, K'sedel didn't need to know everything she worried about. More eggs came and
she counted without thinking, her lips forming the numbers quietly.
"Is that thirty four now?" K'sedel asked as he pondered how to answer. "Try
not to come over as so impulsive, people expect a Weyrwoman to be calm,
measured and thoughtful."
"K'sedel I hate to disappoint you...but I will never be calm or measured.
It's just not me. I'm not the quiet one who listens to everyone before speaking. It
doesn't mean that I don't consider the situation or my options but if I don't say it
right then I will forget what I am going to say or it won't make sense later." Once
again, she was discovering that people couldn't accept her the way she was. They wanted
her to fit into this form of what they expected. She'd never be like Cyradis
and his wanting her to be made her turn inward, reminding her of when she had
been pressured at her old Weyr.
Trying not to be swallowed in her thoughts and her own displeasure at the
situation, she tried to remember why they were there in the first place.
**Do us proud love**
}:Oh I am very proud. And so will everyone be.:{ Orlaith sounded quite smug
before she moved to lay the last egg. It was a good sized clutch and there
would be enough weyrlings. That would mean two classes in the barracks at the same
time, which wasn't unheard of during a Pass at all.
"Is that," K'sedel began as he caught sight of the last egg. It was a
distinctive colour, one that could not be missed.
Catching the tone in his voice, Rhosyn focused and quickly saw what he was
seeing. Orlaith finished laying and when the egg was on the Sands, she carefully
placed it away from the rest a ways. The Queen didn't leave it. Not quite believing and
daring to hope, Rhosyn got down off the Sands, walking forward. The lights didn't do it
justice. Stopping a dragonlength away, she inspected it. It was larger and the color was
there. **Oh you beautiful thing you. You've saved us.** This was their triumph and damn the
rest who doubted them.
}:I am tired and I will rest now. Everything will be allright, mine. Don't
worry:{ Carefully wrapping herself and her tail around some of the eggs, the great dragon fell into a slumber, knowing Nikornath would be there on his ledge while she did.
Turning back to her Weyrleader, Rhosyn smiled as she walked back to the
Stands. "It is."
"Congratulations, She's done us proud," K'sedel said.
