Briata

Briata

"Rhosyn?" Briata called after she knocked lightly on the Weyrwoman's
office door. "It's Briata. I have sketches for you." To be honest,
she only had two sketches, but she wanted to show them before she spent
time on working on more.

"Come in." She was actually drinking water as she went over some of the
tithe lists from the headwoman. There were a few shortages that would
have to be dealt with. Putting that aside, she looked up to see what
Briata had come up with.

The young weaver slipped through the door and closed it behind her.
She had two parchments and carried them over to the goldrider. "I
thought you might like to look at a couple of sketches. I can do more
if you don't or make changes if you prefer."

"Let's see...." Looking over the sketches, she tried to imagine herself
wearing the garments. Remembering what she'd asked of Briata, Rhosyn
nodded to herself.

Briata leaned over to gaze at the sketches, though they were now upside
down. The first for the gather was a simpler affair, pretty enough for
a Gather, but not so elaborate that if it rained or got dirty it would
be devastating. A dress of light blue lay off the shoulders with
sleeves that flared out to allow for plenty of air flow. The waist was
encircled by a dark blue bodice that was edged with white beads. The
skirt flared out at the hips from beneath the bodice, flowing easily
about the the ankles, trimmed with flowers. There was simplicity but
it was dressy enough for a day at a gather. The looseness of the
fabric makes it easy to imagine that it would be fairly cool.

The second was of a fancier gown, perfect for an evening where one must
look her best. The bodice portion seemed to almost be wrapped around
the torso, crossing over the breasts with cap sleeves that left the
arms bare. The waist was high, starting just beneath the breasts and
flowing down with elegant, wispy pleats. The colour was a solid green,
but intricate beadwork was layered over the bodice, adding sparkle and
catching the eye. The skirt again was long, but even though it was
simply a drawing, the fabric looked light and flowing, once again,
allowing for air flow. Briata liked them - she just hoped Rhosyn did.

"And you're sure you could have these ready with all of these
embellishments?" That could be a major problem and she didn't want to
set Briata up to fail.

"Yes, I'm sure. The actual construction of the garments themselves
will only take me a day, maybe two at most." That is, if she didn't
work on anything else besides that and work for her classes. So much
for her project, but really, she didn't mind. It could wait, this
couldn't. Briata motioned to the embellishments. "I'm pretty fast
with embroidery as well and since there's not that much of it, it won't
take me long. The beading will take the longest, but I am sure that I
will be able to get it done in time."

"Do you need my measurements again?" Still considering the clothing and
whether or not she had any suggestions, Rhosyn looked at the drawings,
thinking.

"It's always a good idea to take measurements with each commission."
People changed and while Rhosyn didn't look like she had lost or gained
weight, it was better to be safe than sorry - Briata didn't like to
take chances. She reached down into a small pouch that hung from her
waist and pulled out a measuring rope. "If you don't mind."

Standing up, she put her arms out and waited. "Go ahead."

It didn't take Briata long. She'd made so many garments even before
she came to the Weyr that she couldn't remember them all. A few quick
motions and she had the calculations she needed. "Thank you. I'll let
you know when they're done." And hopefully she wouldn't have to make
any alterations.

"No..thank you Briata." She watched the younger woman as she left,
thinking about what she knew of her. Perhaps someday she would see her
on a dragon, regardless of what the weaver wanted. Life didn't always
go as planned.
