Characters: Naton, Opater
Description: Naton and Opater wake up with some good klah and man-talk.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 6, day 2 of Turn 6
Naton yawned widely as he walked into the Dining Hall, already suited
up for his shore patrol duties. He didn't mind the morning shift, or
at least, he didn't as soon as he was in the water. But it was getting
out of his comfortable bed that caused him the most trouble. Well,
just six days of this and he'd get on another shift. Pouring himself a
big mug of klah, the man looked around to spot his partner for the
next couple of days.
"Hey, Naton!" Opater waved from behind his mug of klah. "Over here!
Have a seat. Let's talk." The journeyman never was one for
pleasantries. He just liked to get down to business.
"Ah, Opater," Naton said, stifling another yawn as he sat down next to
his fellow journeyman. "I suggest we head out as soon as we finish
this?" he asked before taking a big sip of his klah, burning his
tongue in the process and making quite a nasty face.
"No need to hurry," his companion assured him. "I want one more after
this. I don't plan to get down to Red Rock Cove until mid afternoon.
There's usually a couple greenrider ladies bathing nude on the beach
about that time."
Feeling his tongue with a pained expression, Naton looked quite silly,
but he quickly recovered at the mention of bathing greenriders. "Now
really?" he asked with a grin. "That is something new to me." He
paused for a moment, pondering. "And these ladies won't mind some
passing dolphineers?"
"Oh, no! They sit up and wave! Those Weyrgirls love to show off
their jiggly-bits. Though, mind, those greenriders don't have much
that jiggle if you know what I mean. Faranth's toes..." Opater said
with a far off look on his face. "I swear I'd run up on the beach to
talk to them if my anchor wasn't weighing me down just at the sight of
them, if you know what I mean."
Naton laughed a hearty laugh, giving Opater a friendly pat on the
back. "That good?" he asked with a laugh. "I sure need to see them,
then! Who knows, maybe we can get the 'phins to lure them into the
water, eh?" Naton hadn't been with a woman in too a long time, for as
far as he was concerned, and he couldn't really object to the images
Opater's words were conjuring up for him.
"Oh, and some of them get so _hot_ for them, too! You'd think they
didn't ride _dragons_ for Faranth's sake!" Opater leaned a little
closer, lowering his voice. "Once they hear you're a dolphineer,
their eyes just light up, and they talk about seeing the 'fins jumping
and leaping and all, and they talk about how amazing they are... You'd
think we rode _bronzes_ or something! You start talking about
dolphins and panties start dropping like rain, I'm telling you!"
"Now really?" Naton said, raising his eyebrows in interest. "I'll have
to remember to try that sometime." All sorts ideas started to whirl
through the dolphineer's mind, but he tried his best to push them
away. He wasn't really looking for the kind of relationship such a
greenrider could offer him, or was he? Then again, if one of those
ladies happened to be something like what he was looking for, it
couldn't be wrong to happen upon her when she was naked on the beach,
right? "You sound like you have had your share of conquests on that
beach," Naton said, diverting his attention.
"Mmmm," he said, setting his cup down as he swallowed, nodding. "And
not just that beach, and not just _on_ a beach, but anywhere in view
of dolphins you stand a good chance. Now, mind you, not every female
greenrider is easy, but some just can't keep their hands to
themselves." Opater lowered his voice once more. "I was once down on
the beach, right down there in view of the Hall, and a greenrider and
I started flirting up on the sand. I asked her if she wanted to meet
the dolphins and of course she said yes. So I took her out to pet...
Shards, I don't remember who... And pretty soon, shocked as an avian
in a lightning storm, I was, but I realized she wasn't petting the
dolphin anymore, if you know what I mean. Not five yards from
shoreline and in full view of the Hall, the girl had her hand down my
swimming suit. I swear on Farath's Egg," and here the journeyman
raised his right hand as a sign of his sincerity.
"Wow," Naton said, his eyes growing slightly bigger, before gulping
down his klah, now it had finally cooled off. "That is certainly
different from everything I'm used to. I've had my fair share of slaps
just by looking at a lady the wrong way." He rubbed his cheek as if he
could still feel them by remembering. "I think I made the right
choice, moving here!"
"That you have, my friend," Opater said, his hand coming down to give
his companion's shoulder a hearty slap. "Plenty of it to go around, I
promise. Though mind, you have to watch out for some of those boy
greenriders. When they have their clothes on, it can get a little
confusing with a couple of them. Nice enough chaps for what they are,
but make sure you're really talking to _woman_ before you agree to go
back to their Weyr. It's never happened to me, but I have heard
rumors, you know."
"Really?" Naton said, his eyes widening again. "I'm starting to feel
as if I've found myself in a whole new world." He pondered this for a
moment as went to fetch the both of them another mug of klah. "We
should go and visit the Weyr together sometime. They do have something
like a tavern there, I'm sure?" It had been a while since Naton had
operated with a wingman and he was quite liking this guy's style.
"Not really. They have the dinning hall, which serves as a tavern of
sorts after the evening meal. If the riders feel like a real drink,
they can go to any tavern on Pern with just a dragon-thought, so I
guess no one ever really thought they needed one of their own." It
was a pity. A true tavern would be welcome so close by.
"Well, that's a shame!" Naton said, frowning in thought. "If I didn't
love my craft so much, I think I would have found myself a new
occupation. Just imagine that, running a tavern so close to a Weyr!"
It was a bit of a let down for Naton, he liked to let his hair down in
a tavern every now and then, with or without greenriders.
"Ah, but that's why you make friends with the Weyrfolk," Opater
pointed out. "If you have a buddy with a dragon, he'll take you
places sometimes."
"Now that is an awesome idea!" Naton said, but then he hesitated a
little. "I've heard /between/ is a very scary place though. Have you
ever been /between/ yourself?" Naton had heard descriptions of people
who had gone on such a ride and they usually weren't very enthusiastic
about the experience. Not that getting to ride adragonback didn't make
up for it. But still...
Opater raised his mug to his lips as he considered the question.
Finally he said, "Think of the blackest place imaginable, and then
think of the coldest sea you've ever dived into, think of the most
silent depth you can imagine, and then think that no matter how you
will your body to move, you can't see, hear or feel a think except
that cold. That's /between/. But what you have to remember, is that
it's only a few breaths, and then you're right back in the brilliant
sunshine with the wind on your face. You just have to let the moment
be, and then something wonderful comes up on the other side. That's
the way I think of it."
"Well, scary as it may seem, it's an experience I wouldn't pass up
on!" Naton said with a thoughtful nod, taking a sip of his second mug
of klah. "Do you have many dragonrider friends? Someone you could
introduce me too, perhaps?" Naton raised his eyebrows suggestively.
"Friends who could give you a ride? Sure!" Though female friends who
could give Naton a good time, Opater was a little less willing to
share. Bedding the same woman as his friend just felt wrong. "Shards,
how late is it?" They actually were supposed to work that morning,
after all.
"Awesome," Naton said with a grin. "The more people I get to know
there, the better. I actually met a bluerider the other day who
offered me a ride sometime if I need it. I never thought of using that
favor to get to a tavern, to be honest." When Opater mentioned the
time, Naton got pulled back into the reality of the day and nodded.
"Patrol time, my friend," he said with only a small sigh. He loved his
work, really, but it was still awfully early. Still he got up rather
quickly to put the klah mugs away.
