K'sedel

Orlaith had been awake all morning. The gold knew her eggs were hard and it
was only a matter of time. Outside the Hatching Cavern, rain fell onto the
sand in the Weyr Bowl. The droplets could be heard on the roof of the stone. Pat, pat, pat.. The gold's head lifted as the first egg began to rock. Then another. She moved into the center of the Sands, with her eggs around her.

And then she opened her wings and rose up and gave a low hum that started
and then began to be spread around the Weyr. It wasn't long before they knew it was time for the hatching. }:Nikornath, it is time:{

Rhosyn had been ready for this for the last few days. The goldrider changed
course and went straight to the candidate barracks. They knew to be on alert so they hadn't gone far. "Get in your robes! Now!" Nodding to the weyrlingstaff, she helped them get the children to the hatching cavern and onto the Sands. As they saw to the placing of the meat, she stood on the Sands and tracked the progress of the shaking eggs. Orlaith's glowing blue eyes met hers for a moment and then they searched for her bronze mate.

Head dipped in homage to his golden mate, Nikornath greeted her with a bugle as he arrived. }:Our hatchlings will greet us soon,:{ he told her, even as K'sedel arrived, dressed in his best gather finery.

The Cavern began to fill as people took their seats in the Stands. The other dragons in the Weyr could be heard as the humming increased to welcome the little ones. Even the Weyr's firelizards joined in, humming with their cousins. As more and more eggs started to shake, one on the left cracked open and a small body came out. The dragonet pulled itself onto the sands, a brown head greeting the world.

Rhosyn disappeared into her temporary weyr to get herself dressed and ready. The Weyrwoman found her Weyrleader and took her place to watch.

Another head appeared on the right of the Grounds, a green by the sounds of
things. This continued for a time, many eggs opening and hatchlings scrabbling out. The candidates hurried forward to greet them, their white robes circling the eggs. One of them rushed forward to yell, "His name is Orbath!" The first impression was made to a blue.

Many more eggs began to rock and come open, showing the crowd the new dragonets who would one day join River Bluff's wings. Shouts could be heard from the stands as people from holds and halls saw their young ones impress. It was always a thrilling experience.

Much to Rhosyn's delight, a little bronze was coming out of an egg. He was well formed and she watched his progress until a boy could be seen going towards him. Vatonth's head came up as Krizdee found him. The Weyrwoman elbowed K'sedel. "See!"

Orlaith's eyes went to a little brown who was looking at the candidates. His hide was dark, contrasting with the light colored sands. }:You should find your rider:{ the queen commanded helpfully.

Wenarth looked up at his queen and then back at the white things. }:I know
him, but where is he?:{ His head continued to bob as he moved to the left of the group. }:Pastrah!:{ he called, causing a boy to rush forward with wide eyes.

As candidates continued to walk off the sands, Orlaith shifted her weight.
The big gold continued to hum, happy to be surrounded by her hatchlings. They were healthy and finding their candidates. People in the Stands praised her with their applause.

Rhosyn smiled as she saw the boy come off with his brown. **Let him have his future** she thought to herself. Impressions and hatchings always made her remember the day she had impressed, much to everyone's confusion.

An egg near Orlaith's tail rocked and toppled over, leaving a blue dragonet on the Sands. Gaskarth came out and looked around. For a moment, he seemed to want to get back in. His head turned and his eyes rested on a few boys who had come closer, seeing his arrival. }:Only one is right.:{

His sturdy little body made its way across the Sands, a bit ungainly. Almost bumping into one of his sisters, he got himself straight and then walked into the arms of a candidate. Alitel was now A'tel, a bluerider.

After a few greens found their riders, the crowd on the right of the stands began to watch an interesting brown who had a yellowish tint in his hide. Tyerth was crawling from his egg across the warm sands. His whirling yellow eyes showed their hunger. }:Can you hear me?:{ he called to his rider. }:I am hungry. Will you find me?:{ There were a few candidates who came toward him, but they stayed back, thankfully.

A lad pushed through them. "Tyerth! I'm here!" Layris' strong voice was breathless since he had just run across the sands. He rushed forward to wrap his arms around the brown who lifted his head up to him lovingly. They left to get him fed and settled, another pair made on River Bluff's sands.

The Weyrwoman gulped down a bit of water as the sands' heat could be felt by all even as the rain continued. She was glad for the new weyrlings. Putting her hand on K'sedel's knee, she watched for any eggs that hadn't hatched. There was one-oh wait! It was shaking! Letting her breath out, she saw a blue.

He was a brilliant color, easy to spot. The cornflower blue dragonet was slow at first. There weren't many candidates left. The boys came forward, calling to him. He saw them but Himarth raised his neck and headed the other way. It was sort of funny, actually. The candidates were chasing him and he was almost running as fast as his foreclaws would take him. }:Golden One! Tell them to stop chasing me!:{ he cried plaintively.

Orlaith's eyes whirled a bit faster before she bugled at the offending candidates, who stopped short, but looked longingly at the blue. Rhosyn was confused. Why was the dragonet leaving the candidates behind? Her eyes followed him as he picked his way slowly through the egg shards. }:I have to find my rider. He is here, somewhere:{ Peeking into the eggs, he seemed to be searching for his partner.

}:Himarth, he is not in there:{ Orlaith encouraged, guessing at what her last hatchling was up to.

}:He is here. I know it:{ the blue told her, plodding along further to the edge of the sands. The other weyrlings were at the tables, feeding their dragonets. Some of the candidates who had fallen and scraped themselves up were being seen to by the healers. The boys continued to stand back, watching, still in their white robes. And then, Himarth's eyes connected with a boy. This boy was not wearing a white robe. He was in a red tunic with dragonhealing knots on the shoulder.

Knowing his in that moment, Himarth bugled in triumph. }:I knew it! See!:{ Walking up to his rider, he gently butted him in the leg with his head. The boy turned around from where he'd been handing another a tool. His eyes saw the dragonet first and then he stood very still. }:Feed me please. I thought I wouldn't find you:{

When it was clear what had happened, the crowd gasped. Most didn't know who the boy was, but some of the Weyrfolk did. Rhosyn secretly smiled, though she was slightly worried. She wanted Angshel, A'shel now, to get through this. She'd do whatever she could for him. }:It will be allright, mine:{ Orlaith soothed her before leaving the grounds to eat. Sitting with eggs was hard.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Y'gel's daughter head off. Gelira hadn't impressed. Good. **Maybe she'll get a gold yet** Rhosyn hoped. The weyrlingstaff had the new pairs in hand, getting them fed and to their wallows.
