Description: Rhosyn and Y'gel perform a progress check on the eggs.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 14 of Turn 6
She'd gotten away from the Sands for most of the day. However, it was
time to make sure everything was going well.
Orlaith had lain many clutches in her career as a breeding gold.
Rhosyn was familiar with eggs and how they changed as they hardened.
Still, she didn't think it would hurt to get a second opinion that
everything was going well. So, after she grabbed her boots, she met
Y'gel in the hatching cavern.
Called as he was to the hatching cavern he had to scold Aughashyth to
stay where he was. **No you cannot come, they are not yours and
Orlaith will not allow you near her eggs.**
He already had his boots on and waited by the entrance for Rhosyn. He knew
enough not to approach the queen in her current state without the
Weyrwoman. Their tryst had been nothing more than her working off her
preflight proddiness so he greeted her as he would any other friend.
"How is she feeling," he asked.
"She's fine." The goldrider nodded, walking inside slowly. **We are coming
to see** she told her queen, whose whirling eyes could be seen easily amongst
the shells of the eggs she guarded.
"Come on Y'gel, it's okay." She led him onto the sands and into the first row
of eggs. "What do you think?"
He kept one eye on Orlaith for the slightest protest as he knelt
examining the eggs only visually at first. "Mmm," he hummed as he
concentrated. "These look good and seem to be hardening evenly. She
knows what she's about and when to turn the eggs." He looked toward
the golden queen. "May I touch?"
}:Be very careful, healer:{ she warned him, but otherwise she stayed back,
watching. She had worked with Aughashyth and the healer enough times that
she trusted him.
He blinked and threw a startled and pleased look at the Weyrwoman.
That was the first time the gold had spoken to him directly. He didn't
take her warning at all lightly. **Assure her I will use the utmost
care** and he heard as Aug passed the word along.
He ran his fingers lightly across the surface of the nearest egg and
nodded. They were indeed hardening nicely. Once he'd examined three
more in a like manner he stood and bowed to the queen. "You are an
excellent mother," he said in his most respectful tone.
He turned to Rhosyn. "She's doing great," he smiled. "They all appear
to be full of life. I didn't find a single dud." That didn't mean all
of them would hatch but it was worthy of note. Sometimes for some
inexplicable reason eggs either didn't develop or didn't hatch and
that was very upsetting to the Weyrleaders and their lifemates.
"Aye, I've been watching them myself. Hopefully this time they'll all
hatch out, though when they don't, it's usually for good reason." Rhosyn
frowned, thinking of a few such instances she had seen before. Flit eggs
did the same thing from time to time.
He nodded in response to her statement. Rhosyn was a fine dragonhealer
in her own right and understood these things. "Will she allow herself
to be examined now or would it be better to wait until after they're
hatched?" He didn't see evidence of any fresh ichor to be concerned
over but it never hurt to be cautious.
"To be honest, I think we will have to wait. She's not going to move now and
she's not in the mood to tolerate any prodding." The Weyrwoman could only
push her dragon so much and when there were eggs involved, she didn't get very
far.
"Good enough," he nodded. Truthfully he'd gotten farther today than
he'd thought possible. "Will she let you out now that you're here?"
"Oh aye, she doesn't care about that. I come and go as much as I please.
She just stays and is careful about other people who might come in." She
remembered what Hygalia had said about her gold not letting her leave.
Rhosyn had never had that problem.
"As she should be," he agreed. Of course all queens were different in
their needs and relationships with their riders. "Do you think she'll
allow the candidates to visit?" He didn't think they should come yet.
The eggs were still a little too soft but soon they would be hard
enough.
"Orlaith will, but she'll want them here one by one. Big groups mean less
control to her and less safety. It also means that they get more time to look
around, though." Rhosyn gave her queen one last glance before she quietly
led Y'gel out of the grounds.
He nodded as they moved out of the hatching ground. He thought
wistfully of how great a father Aughashyth would have been had he not
been flamed so young. But then he was also quite certain his own life
would have taken a completely different path. He put a hand on
Rhosyn's back to usher her out the door before him. "She's doing a
great job," he said. "Of course she's experienced so that's to be expected."
"Aye well we need the dragons so every egg counts." Praise for her queen was
always welcome even if Orlaith didn't care about it. "You hungry?" she
asked easily.
"Famished," he grinned. He happily accepted the comfort of their
working relationship. "And I have a nice bottle of wine from that new
vintner to go with."
