Description: Merlish and Eilomar are settling into married life
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 1, day 10 of Turn 6
Merlish carefully spooned a bit of gravy over the river grains on each
of their plates, trying to be careful not to drip any on the table cloth
that had just come back from the laundry. All that was left would be to
pour them both a glass of juice and everything would be ready for Master
Eilomar's return. She knew he had only a short time for lunch every
day, so she liked to have the meal ready and waiting by the time he
arrived. Of course, in the Weyr, she had no kitchen to cook anything
herself, but she could at set the table properly. There was just enough
time to pat a flower in the vase back in place before the door opened.
"Welcome home..." She had to stop herself before she added 'Master
Eilomar'. It still sounded strange to call him anything else. "Your
lunch is ready for you."
"Thank you, Merlish," Eilomar replied and put the armful of hides he had
brought with him to a table. He had to admit that it was nice to come
home to a ready table again.
Merlish resisted the urge to frown. She had just cleaned that table!
Though the hides could eventually be moved easily enough. "Are you in a
rush today, sir?" She winced, realizing that yet again she had added
the honorific title.
"I've told you dozens of times to leave of that sir," Eilomar said with
tolerant tone. She would learn eventually. "Those are apprentice works I
have to go thru for tomorrow. I though I could look them this evening,"
he glanced the pile.
She turned to pour them their glasses of juice to hide the crimson glow
on her face. Merlish was trying so hard to be the perfect wife, but she
always ended up doing or saying something that made her feel stupid!
"It looks like a lot of work."
"It is. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only master harper around,"
Eilomar grumbled. "Oh, Almonteo asked if we want to move to the new
Harper Hall in the first wave or later," he suddenly remember.
"Oh?" Merlish perked up at that thought. Their promised cot at last?
"Will your students be moving first then?"
"Probably not. That would disturb their studies too much, since the Hall
is only half-done yet," Eilomar replied.
"I see." She sat down, feeling that perhaps it wasn't as simple as she
had hoped. "So what will we do?"
"I grew up in that place, it's home," Eilomar said. Besides the climate
agreed with him better too.
Merlish felt no attachment to their present location either, and would
rather not spend much more time at the Weyr than was necessary. "So you
want to move with the first group then?"
"Yes, I do. I'll let Almonteo know," Eilomar replied, glad that the
matter was decided.
"Oh, it will be so wonderful to back into a _real_ home again!" Merlish
all but squealed as she clapped her hands with delight. A home of her
own! A kitchen! Rooms with windows! People like _them_ around!
"Certainly preferetable than this," Eilomar agreed and waived his hand
to indicate the weyr they lived.
"I'm so glad you think so." She also gestured the rooms they had been
sharing so far. "I could stand all this for your sake, but I can't wait
to leave this place."
Eilomar just nodded and concentrated on finishing his food.
