Sometimes when he saw Briata across the cavern she reminded him
painfully of Liranet. But then, so did is daughter. It had been such a
long time now yet once in awhile it swept over him like a huge wave.
He stood there frozen for a few moments watching her talking to Gormth
again. stroking him and leaning against him and the wave of grief
nearly bowled him over.
He turned and went back into his office and covered his face with his
hands. "Oh Lira, how I miss you," he whispered to no one there.
~~~begin flashback~~~
He jogged across the Weyrbowl when he saw Olineth swoop down from the
heights. Her beautiful dappled green hide shining with health. "Lira,"
he called before she could scramble up the side of her lifemate.
"Y'gel," the dark haired beauty said as she turned to the man who
approached. A smile lit up her face and made her eyes seem to dance.
Liranet moved forward, arms extended. "I've missed you." It was true
that what existed between them was nothing serious, at least not yet,
but ever since he'd won Olineth's flight she'd found herself enjoying
his company and now, well, now she had an even greater reason to talk
with him. "I'd been hoping to find you today," she spoke quietly.
He grinned as he got close to her. "Guess what Lira!" he said as happy
as a he could be. "Master T'olsn pulled me aside just a few moments
ago. I'm going to walk the tables. I'll be a Senior Journeyman!" He
was so happy he wanted to pick her up and swing her around. Instead he
grabbed her hand grinning like a fool. "Please come to dinner with me?
We can celebrate."
"Oh Y'gel," she said throwing her arms around him. "That's wonderful
news. I'd love to have dinner with you." **Maybe that would be a good
time to tell you,**, she mused. "Maybe we can find a nice, quiet table
all to ourselves." She definitely didn't need an audience for what she
had to share with him.
"Wonderful," he said wrapping his arms around her. She was sweet and
beautiful and didn't mind at all that he and Aughashyth didn't fly in
one of the wings. "Are you ready now?"
"I am," she replied. "Lead the way. We can celebrate your walking the
tables and..." she paused. "I might have some news to celebrate too,
but I'd rather wait until we get settled first." Liranet hoped Y'gel
would think her news was something worth celebrating, but she wasn't
completely sure how he would react.
"Ok," he said and walked beside her toward the dining hall. He knew
exactly which table he was going for and sure enough it was empty.
"Why don't you sit here and I'll get our food. How does that sound?"
"That would be lovely. Thank you Y'gel." Liranet smiled as she looked
at him. **Would he be excited by her news?** As he walked away, she
slipped a hand down to her abdomen as though she could some how draw
strength from what she knew. Liranet wanted him to be happy with her
news. She liked Y'gel, far more than she normally felt about the other
riders. She looked when she saw him returning.
"They didn't have the kind of bubblies you like but I found us a nice
wine," he said holding up his prize. He slid the tray onto the table
and went back for glasses. Soon he was back and slid into the chair
next to her there in the corner. "There we go.' He opened the bottle
and poured her glass then his.
She eyed the glass but didn't drink from it. "I think perhaps I'll
just drink some klah or water tonight," she said with a small smile.
She did, however, pick up the bubbly pie for her stomach was rumbling.
It seemed since she found out that she'd been nothing _but_ hungry.
"So, when will you walk the tables?" Liranet wanted to be there for
him when the official day came.
"Another couple sevendays," he said with a smile. He poured himself a
glass of the wine. "Are you sure you don't want any?" He was enjoying
his times with the greenrider quite a lot and even found himself
drinking a little less than he had previously. He went to get her the
requested klah and set it in front of her when he got back. He smiled
and pressed her hand before he started in on his meal.
She shook her head when he offered her wine the second time. She
wouldn't be drinking it anytime soon. "I'll be there to support you,"
Liranet told him as she sipped the klah he brought her. She opened her
mouth to tell him, then found the words seemed stuck in her throat.
What if he wasn't happy about the whole thing? It could potentially
ruin the wonderful relationship she felt they'd been building
together, yet, if that was the case, then perhaps it was best to tell
him now.
"I got some interesting news today as well," she said quietly.
He smiled as he chewed the steak was wonderful and juice slid down his
throat. "Did you? What kind?" He was looking at his plate while he cut
another bite.
"Hopefully good news," Liranet replied. Pausing a bit, she leaned
closer towards him across the table. "I'm pregnant."
It took a moment for what she'd said to register but when it did his
fork dropped to his plate and he swallowed... hard. His eyes got round
and then a smile spread across his face. " Lira? Is it..." he couldn't
bring himself to finish the question but it was there in his eyes.
Hope.
She nodded. "I could be no one else's," she stated simply. "I'm
keeping it." She hoped he would be happy about the child, but
regardless she'd already decided she wanted this babe more than
anything. It would be so much better if he wanted it, too. She
couldn't tell for sure from his initial reaction what he was really
thinking. "I hope you want to raise the child with me," she said,
looking into his eyes, afraid that he might tell her nay.
He leaned forward and covered her hand with his. "Liranet, this is
_wonderful news_!" His fingers turned and slipped under her hand.
Picking it up he lifted it to his lips. "Of course we're keeping it."
Her heart could not have been happier. Liranet thought it just might
burst from the sheer joy of the moment. "You'll make a wonderful
father, I know it," she whispered quietly, a tear of joy forming in
the corner of her eye.
Her reaction told him everything he wanted to know. Only one more
question and if she said yes, he would have everything he'd ever
wanted right there in his hands. He leaned in to capture her soft
lips.
"Werymate with me Liranet," he said softly.
Her eyes opened wide for the briefest of seconds, not have expected
that question in the slightest.
"Oh Y'gel," she breathed, her eyes growing misty, "Yes. I would like
that more than anything."
~~~End Flashback~~~
His shoulders shook and tears flowed freely once again for the love of
his life. Too soon, they'd both passed too soon. Both they and their
dragons had been truly mated. A soothing croon sounded from the cavern
beyond and love flowed across his link with Aughashyth. Y'gel turned
once again to the table in his office where he kept that one thing
that could reliably take the edge off his grief. He poured himself a
strong drink while wiping the tears from his cheeks.
