Y'gel

Y'gel

Y'gel worked on his hides late into the afternoon and was beginning to
feel his eyes tiring. He pinched his nose and called for an assistant.
"Angshel!" he called knowing the youngster liked to hang around the
cavern even when he was out of class.

"Yes, sir?" The slender boy came into the room, his study manual
still under his arm.

"Have a seat son." He indicated the chair across from his desk. "How
are your studies coming?"

"Okay..I think." He tucked his book self conscoiusly under his arm,
hoping the Master didn't think him overly studious. Some of the boys
seemed to think that was funny, or at worst, trying too hard.

"I have a bit of a situation that I believe you can help me with," he
said. "The recent hatching has depleted our candidate supply so we're
a little short on helping hands. So, I wondered if you would like to
expand your duties a bit."

Angshel perked up at that. "Yes, I would love to! What can I do, sir?"

"You know that blue who was injured in the last fall, Gormth?" He was
pleased by the youngster's eagerness to help. "Well his rider is
unable to care for him so he needs someone to make sure he's
comfortable, watered, and even fed if necessary."

"Oh, I know Gormth quite well." He was so sorry to hear of his and
Im're's injury. "It'd be an honour to help him in whatever way he
needs."

"Then let's go see him shall we?" He pushed up from his desk and
walked out into the healing cavern beyond.

The boy jumped up off his seat and followed the Masterhealer out into
the vast cavern that was the dragon infirmary. "How extensive are his
injuries, sir?" He wondered about the state of Im're as well. The
boy hadn't looked at all good the other day.

"He had a deep scoring to his leading wing edge, I had to be closed
with sutures. It required Orlaith to control him as he was in great
pain. The Weyrwoman helped with the repair. It was well done and he is
on his way to recovery. But he lost a bit of ichor and will need to
remain hydrated." Y'gel talked as he walked quickly toward the blue.

"See there? His trough is empty! Why don't you run get him some more water."

The boy nodded and ran to do just that. Just a quick glimpse told him
that Gormth was in a bad way. He wondered how Im're was doing.

As the apprentice scurried away to do his bidding Y'gel walked toward
his blue patient. **Is he at all hungry?** he asked. }:Mine wishes to
know if you are hungry.{:

}: No, :{ Gormth replied, not in a mood for long chit-chats.

Angshel came back with a full tub of water, which he placed as close
to Gormth as was comfortable for the dragon. "Here you go..." he told
the blue, shyly patting him on the forearm.

Y'gel smiled and then turned back to Gormth. "Angshel will take care
of you and find out information to bring you about yours." Then his
eyes moved back to the boy. "He can understand you just fine Angshel
but I want you to keep his water full and get him an update on Im're
every few hours until he's conscious and able to communicate.

"Im're's still unconscious?" The boy wanted to cry--or punch
something--at that thought. Of all the people to be injured.

"He's in and out from what I hear. He'll heal well enough though so
it's necessary to keep Gormth reassured."

"Okay." The boy made a mental note to see Im're as soon as he could.

Y'gel put his hand on the boy's shoulder. "You're doing well son. Keep
up the good work." With that Y'gel turned and went back towards his
office.
