R'enh

R'enh

The day was warm and training had gone late. Then there was hidework
and meetings. After dinner he was restless... **Want to go down to the
beach** }:Yes! Lets. There is a ball:{

**Ball? What are you talking about**

}:Elleth showed me her ball. I think we should have a ball.:{

**Just come and get me.** R'enh snorted and shook his head as he
walked out of the dining cavern. He was looking forward to the cool
waters at the beach. When they finally arrived the sun was setting and
a cool breeze blew in across the water.

Elleth liked the water.  It might be because she had been hatched at a
seaside Weyr.  She had already _been_ in the water, but she wasn't
alone.  Meledei had gone with her, that was for sure, but no, her
other companion was quite a bit smaller - and rounder.  As the bronze
had said, there was a ball, and it was Elleth's ball.  She was kicking
it with her foreclaws and tail, sometimes into the water to let it
skipp over the surface, then back out again.  Sometimes she would push
it further out to sea, then draw it back in.  Over and over again
without tiring, she played with that silly ball.

Meledei wasn't quite as enamored with the toy as Elleth was.  She
played with her dragon for a little while but then called for a break
and made her way onto the shore.  She was leaning back on a blanket
she had brought when R'enh and his great bronze appeared.  One hand
lifted in greeting, then dropped down as she watched them draw closer

"Hey!" yelled R'enh as they dove straight into the water beyond
Elleth. **Warn me next time you plan on doing that!** he scolded as he
spit water and swam to the surface. Luckily he was wearing old
clothing. }:The ball is here.:{

He snorted and stroked for the beach coming out of the water dripping
wet. "Big brat." he said grinning at Meledei. He didn't drip on her
blanket but stripped his shirt off and wrung it dry before draping it
on a rock.

"How are you this evening," he said trying to ignore the expression on her face.

By that time, of course, Meledei was laughing, holding her stomach as
she had watched the bronze and the results of his actions on his poor
rider.  "Hi R'enh!"  She managed after a moment, that laughter slowly
simmering into giggles.  "I'm all right.  Drier than you.  It looks
like you got an impromptu dip!  And you're _still_ dripping."  She
noted as she motioned to his soaked trousers.  "Did he do that without
you knowing?"

R'enh chuckled and pulled off the wet pants but left his undershorts
just because. Tossing them on the rock next to the shirt. "Yes he did,
big bully," he laughed. "I only got a glimmer as he dove. Enough time
to pull my safely release."

He looked back out over the water to see the ball pop into the air
followed by Mnoranth's head coming out of the water to bat it toward
Elleth. He shook his head.  "Where did you get that thing?"

"Elleth got it."  Meledei giggled again, unable to help herself.  "It
was when we were Weyrlings."  Meledei made a motion for R'enh to have
a seat next to her, the blanket more than big enough for the two of
them.  "And it was before she was involved in the training so she was
pretty young.  I was in class and she had gone to the lake.  Evidently
there was this girl there with a ball and they began to play but the
girl had to go and let Elleth keep the ball.  Now it's her favourite
thing in the whole world."

}:That's not true.  You are.:{

Meledei grinned.  "She's corrected me. I'm her favourite thing, so
that must be her second favourite."

He laughed and ran his fingers through his wet hair. "As it should
be," he said. "So I guess they wanted to play with the ball tonight."
He sat down on the blanket to watch them.

"Elleth likes to play with her ball a _lot_.  She'd probably play with
it a lot more if I didn't force her to put it away sometimes."
Meledei chuckled and lay back down, hands behind her head as her eyes
turned toward the sky.  "So what brought you to the beach?"

"I just like to come here in the evenings," he said. "The breeze is
nice after a long hot day. Besides, I think Elleth has been recruiting
more ball players."

"She'll ask anyone to play ball with her."  Meledei grinned up at the
sky and hooked one leg over the other, her foot bouncing up and down -
much like Elleth's ball.  "She's obsessed with that thing.  I didn't
know you came here.  I like the water myself so come here or the lake
quite a bit."

R'enh leaned back on his elbows enjoying the evening air and the cool
gentle breeze coming off the lake. "I don't come as often as I'd like.
Still getting my arms around the work and I want to really make a
difference in the wing. So I tend to work late." Plus there was no
weyrmate to be upset if he wasn't there on time for dinner, but he
wasn't going to add that part.  "They're sure having fun." He pointed
with his chin out to the water where the ball was flying back and
forth.

"Yeah, I guess there are some advantages to not having a Weyrmate."
Meledei sighed softly.  At one point she thought she might have had a
Weyrmate.  And yet, it was a good thing they hadn't.  It would have
just made things worse.  "Though sometimes I don't like the fact I
come home to an empty weyr."

"Trust me I know the feeling." he said softly. There were times when
he missed the warm friendly body in the bed next to him or simply
sitting together as he was now with Meledei. But other times the
yelling and possessiveness left him happy enough to be alone in his
own Weyr.  But that made him think of something else.

"You know I could use a good eye if you have the time at some point."

"A good eye?"  Meledei didn't quite understand what he meant, and she
may have caught on but Elleth's flicking the ball toward them and
having it roll almost all the way to her feet distracted her.  She
grinned and stood and kicked it back toward the dragons before
lowering back down to her former position.

"Yes," he said as she sat back down. "I got a couple of tapestries
from Janani to help make my new weyr a bit more homey. But I can't
figure out exactly where to put them.  She offered but has been very
busy. She said you helped her with them originally but she has her own
stuff here now and doesn't need them anymore."

"You got them from Janani?"  Meledei remembered when she had acquired
some tapestries for the Weyrwoman - back before she was actually
Weyrwoman!  "Sure, I don't mind helping out with that.  Sounds like
she's passing along the tapestries that I found for her.  Yeah, they
were something I thought might make the place a little more cheerful
til she could bring more of her own stuff over."  She had figured they
wouldn't be permanent.  "When do you want to do that?"

"Whenever you have an evening free. I'm usually working late but I'd
appreciate a night off." He smiled, "I'll even make sure you have
dinner." The thought of actually making his weyr seem like home
instead of a temporary stopping place uplifted his spirits.

"Well, if those two are willing to finish with the ball, we could go
right now."  Meledei eyed her dragon who was flipping the toy up into
the air and letting it come down with a splash - a splash that was
quite pitiful compared to what the dragon herself could do!  **Think
we can head back to the Weyr now?**

}:I would like to play with my ball some more, but if you truly wish it.:{

"I think we can convince them," he said with a smile. "We can always
come back for more fun another time."
