Meledei was tired. It'd been a long day that had started way too
early. The night had ended in restless slumber which had been
punctuated by several awakenings. It meant she didn't get much sleep
and the dawn would wait for no one. She stared down at the plate in
front of her, idly thinking that she should pick up her fork, cut off
some meat and put it in her mouth, but for some reason her hand wasn't
moving. So she short of just sat there. And stared. At meat.
"It helps relieve hunger better if you actually put it in your mouth."
R'enh slid into the chair across from Meledei. She looked completely
worn out.
Meledei's lips stretched up in a grin and she tried to laugh but it
sounded flat. "Yes, well, I am _exhausted_ she admitted as she tried
to take up her fork and put something in her mouth. She succeeded
this time, though her chewing went very slowly. When she finally
finished that bite, she asked, "How are you doing, R'enh?"
"You look it," he said with sympathy. He pushed his cup of klah toward
her. "Here, maybe that will help you stay awake long enough to finish
your meal." He chuckled. "I'm fine, getting ready for tomorrow."
"There's never enough time is there?" Meledei reached for the klah
and lifted it to her mouth, taking a long sip. "I'm not sure if it
will keep me awake. That might be more of an issue of sure force of
will." The mug was set back on the table and Meledei proceeded to cut
off a piece of her steak. "Anything interesting going on with you?
More used to the Weyr now?"
"No, sure doesn't seem to be." He waived at one of the drudges to
bring a pitcher and another mug. Lifting the pot he topped her mug
with hot beverage before filling his own. Then began to tuck into his
own steak and tuber. "Just the ordinary day to day stuff," he said
between bites. "I think I need something to read in the evenings."
"I can help you with that if you're interested in history or wing
formations or the cycles of how many people live in the Weyr." A grin
sprouted onto Meledei's face. Having company helped her gain some
energy back. She didn't feel like she wanted to get up and dance a
jig, but she didn't feel like she was going to fall over. "Have you
checked with the harpers?"
He smiled at her grin. "Cute," he commented on her quip. "I haven't
checked with anyone yet since I just thought about it. See what
thinking out loud gets me? Abuse!"
Meledei giggled and gently poked toward him with her fork, though it came
nowhere near to touch him. Then she proceeded to poke into her food.
"You should check with the Harper Hall - I'm sure they'll have a goodly
amount of stuff that would be interesting."
"I'm sure they would," he chuckled. "Though I probably wouldn't mind
reading about the history of wing formations." Then he took another
look at her eyes. "Seriously Mel you need to get some sleep. You won't
do anyone any good if you can't keep your eyes open or you get sick."
"Yeah, I know." Meledei began to eat more in earnest. She needed to
sleep and she needed to eat. "Maybe I'll go to bed early." She did
have plans for the rest day, after all, and she didn't want to be
tired for _that_.
"No trip to the beach tonight, you march right up those stairs to your
weyr when you're done." R'enh grinned at her knowing he was sounding
more like her da than her friend but he didn't like seeing her this
exhausted.
"Yes sir!" For once, Meledei was willing to take that sort of command
- she was just that tired. Even if R'enh hadn't 'suggested' it she
probably would have done just that. The food was finished and Meledei
pushed her seat back. "And that's just what I'll do. I'm sure I'll
see you soon, R'enh."
At least she didn't look upset by his 'command.' Goldriders could be
touchy at times. He supposed it was because of the assurance of their
lifemate that they could command the Weyr at will. Which of course
they could. If Elleth wanted Mnoranth to go play ball with her... he
would do as she asked.
"Have a good rest. We have fall day after tomorrow, we need you." He
signaled one of the drudges for a glass of wine.
"Don't worry, I'll be sure to be rested by then." Meledei smiled and
waved, then turned to head out. Yes, bed was just the thing she
needed!
