N'vanik

N'vanik

Once she finished drying, Rhosyn pulled on her robe. She went into the sleeping
chamber and went to the sideboard. A wineskin and glasses rested there. She
poured, turning to see if he had time to follow so she could offer him one.

He followed her without putting his clothes back on. He reached out a
hand, silently asking for a glass. When she handed it to him, he
knocked back half it in one long swallow.

"Goodness, you were thirsty. Do you want more?" She held the wineskin
out to pour.

He held out his glass. "I don't know how to read you," he said thoughtfully.

"How's that?" She filled it for him, then set the wine aside and pulled her
own glass into her hand.

N'vanik tilted his head slightly. "There's a wall around you. I don't
know if I'm seeing past that wall or if I'm only seeing what you want
me to see."

"I'd say that's true of you as well. To a point, though, we all try to control
how others see us." She finished her glass and set it down. "I would never
cry, knowing my Weyrfolk might see it for example. They need to know that I
am strong and that I can carry them on my shoulders."

"But they aren't watching you now." He took a small sip.

"No." Her eyes stayed on him, considering. "It's a rare thing. I don't do it
often. I get angry instead. And that, N'vanik, you don't want to see." He
had seen glimpses in the past, but never the real thing. Rhosyn had learned
to somewhat control her temper, though it still got the best of her at times.
"I suppose you can blame them for teaching me my manners."

"There's a game to play when you're a leader. Even I've learned that.
But you don't have to play the game all the time."

"That's true. The only thing is, I'm not playing. I've never been one
of those girls. This is who I am. Believe me, if I think something's
funny I'll laugh.
Or if I think you're a feckup, I'm going to tell you so. But the
bottom line is, I'm
going to do what I'm going to do, usually." She had had too many turns of being
denied. "What do you think I'm doing?" It was interesting finding out how others
perceived her.

"Trying to put some distance between us," he said. Maybe he was wrong.
He hoped he was wrong.

"Why do you say that? Just because I'm not jumping all over you the moment
you walk in?" She smiled, leaning back against the table. "N'vanik, you're the
only male I spend most of my time with, barring K'sedel. You, on the other hand,
aren't limiting yourself."

"And you think I should?"

"No, it's your choice to do whatever you like. Weyrfolk don't behave the same
way as others do and I understand that. I also realize that Talryne is there and
I don't begrudge her. I'm just saying I rather think it's interesting
you think I'm
trying to pull away when you're the one spreading your attentions more than me."
Rhosyn was an adult dragonrider. She understood the ways of the Weyr. She also
chose not to be as free with herself as others might be.

"I might be spreading my attentions less than you think." N'vanik took a sip of
his wine.

"Oh? Do tell." She reached an arm inside her robe to scratch her
belly, curiosity
winning out over the fact that she didn't really want details, but
enjoyed her blissful
ignorance.

"There's Talryne, and you, and Janani. Anything else is occasional."
He chuckled. "Between the three of you, I honestly don't have that
much _time_."

"Ah so then catching wasn't just because of Loseth." She frowned upon
this revelation
and turned away, pouring herself more wine as she tried her best to
control the first
thoughts to enter her mind. **I wish Janani would grow a big fat wart
on her face or
walk crooked or...**

Was she jealous? He couldn't help being pleased by the idea. "I didn't
sleep with her before the Flight, if that's what you mean."

"But you have since." She stated it as a fact. Remarkably, her anger had
yet to win through her voice, though her agitation was plain to anyone who
knew her well. "I'm sure it will make for a stronger partnership."

And not for the first time she thought about K'sedel and how their relationship
was different. Rhosyn had no desire to be that way with _him_. **If she had
only been older...or kept her legs shut** Bringing her head up, she looked at
him head-on, her temper clear in her eyes. "Can we change the subject before
I throw something at the wall or you?"

A smile curled his lips. "Oh, I don't know. That might be kinda fun."

"You say that now, but when you have a large bruise on the side of your head
and have to explain to your Wingsecond that another Weyrwoman hit you, it
won't be that funny." She had drank more wine by then, her cheeks growing rosy.

His smile faded. "No Wingsecond to explain it to right now."

"Ah..right. Well then your Weyrlingmaster?" She shrugged. She did start swaying
slightly, but she hadn't yet gotten real tipsy, just good and calm.

N'vanik finished his glass and set it down, pushing the grief back
into the little box in his mind. "Or I'd have to explain it to Janani,
and she'd wonder what I did to upset you, and I'd tell her it was fine
because I made sure to make up for it." He slipped an arm around her
waist and bent to kiss her.

"Don't say her name anymore," she said softly before she returned his
kiss. Rhosyn wanted his undivided attention. Her arms circled his back
and shoulders, as her chest heaved with her breathing.

He slipped her robe off and let it fall to the floor. "Then I'll say
your name instead." N'vanik brushed his lips against her ear and
whispered, "Rhosyn."
