Jaylene

Jaylene was watching the formations of the weyrlings when the summons
came for her to go to the Weyrleader's room. Saying good-bye to the
staff member who was a close friend, she turned and walked into the
coolness of the man's weyr. She nodded hello to Nikornath before
calling out, "K'sedel? You wanted to see me?"

"Yes, yes I did. Come in Jaylene."

She walked into the Weyrleader's office. "Hello! What's on the
agenda today, sir?" She grinned and took a seat, wondering is they
were going to talk about.

"I wanted to talk to you about that fall," he began. "Tell me your side of
events."

"Okay," she muttered, wondering if she was in some sort of trouble.
True, Reanth was smaller than Im're's blue and maybe shouldn't have
tried to catch him but then again, they were the first to move to help
and she couldn't imagine the damage that would have happened to both
boy and dragon had they fallen a hundred feet or so. "It just was a
bad Fall, I think the boy and his dragon weren't used to having to
deal with conditions like that. And Uetia's green said they had been
hit, Reath and I were in the position to try and stop their descent.
To be honest, we didn't really think about it, we just reacted to the
events going on. How bad are they injured, sir?"

"I'm waiting for a report from the Healers and Dragonhealers on that one,"
K'sedel told her. "But it was more that I wanted to confirm the reports I
got from some of the other riders in our wing."

"Oh...okay." She still wasn't sure if she had done something wrong or not.

"Relax Jaylene. There is nothing to worry about here. In fact, something
quite the opposite." K'sedel felt in his desk draw for a set of knots.
"Poelsia came to see me this morning," The Wingthird was quite popular, or
so he believed with the the rest of the wing. "She and her Bakercrafter
weyrmate Radner are expecting a baby."

"Really? I know she's been trying for turns now...so whow, she's
finally pregnant?" Jaylene smiled, thinking of the feisty little
wingthird. A child couldn't be more loved than that one, for all the
troubles she and her weyrmate had gone through, trying to have one.

"And there's a vacancy, temporary at first, for a wingthird." The knots were
placed on the desk, and gently pushed in her direction. "If you want the
knots that is."

"Really? Me?" The tall woman was stunned and leaned forward to look
at the knots, not daring to pick them up. She racked her brain to
think of why K'sedel would even consider her for the job. She was as
organized as a green flit. But then again, this did mean a new weyr,
one with a private bath. Oh, would Uetia and her brothers be pleased
with that!

"It isn't an offer made lightly, and there are responsibilities that go with
it as well. If you need time to think, I'll understand."

**What do you think, love?** Jaylene knew her green would have been
listening in.

}:Does that mean a bigger wallow, right:{ Reanth was pleased with
that thought. Maybe she could get two blues into it for a cuddle!

**When it comes to males, you're worse than me! It means a lot more
responsibility...what do you think? Can you be up for leading the
second greens and blues into Fall?**

}:Sure, I can be bossy.:{

Jaylene snorted at that. "Reanth says she can boss," she told
K'sedel. Reaching out, she fingers the knots. "Oh, what the heck,
yeah, we'll do it! As you said, it's only temporary for the
moment...so if we're terrible them I can always turn them back in.
Or...the rest of the wing can bring me back in shredded bits to you!"

"I doubt that will happen," K'sedel said with a chuckle. "Congratulations,
Wingthird."

She gathered the knots in her hands and smiled, proud. Wait til she
could see her brothers, and Uetia! And P'veas and M'van! Looking up
at her Weyrleader, she asked, "so what are my new duties, sir?"

"For the moment I want you to sit in with Poelsia as she sorts out her
hidework, you'll get a sense of what needs doing from that. You'll be
invited to Wing briefings daily, and there will be some junior members of
the wing looking to you for guidance."

"Okay, I'll go right now." The women probably needed a bit of help
anyways, with her only being in the first stage of pregnancy.
"Anything else?"

"You'll probably want to see the Headwoman about moving, there is a new weyr
for you and Reanth if you want it."

"Do we want it?" A private bathing pool? Who wouldn't want that!
"Reanth'll probably beat me to it. She's already talking about how
many blue dragons she can fit into a bigger wallow!"

"Enjoy it while you can, there will be a few days before you'll need to lead
the changeover."

She laughed. "True..."

"Go and see Sol now before she gets too busy."

"Okay, okay! I'm there already." The woman laughed and stood up.
That wouldn't take too long and she could catch up with Poelsia as
well. Ah yes, things were looking up!
