Briata

Briata

"How do you enjoy your classes?" Briata paused in her eating, her gaze settling upon the young man across from her. He hadn't been at them that long, but Briata was curious as to how things were going. She hadn't been able to spend as much time with Angshel as she had liked. Their schedules didn't always coincide, and there were times that she was working late on some creation or another. This was particularly true when inspiration struck. There were some days when she hadn't had any sleep, though at least they weren't particularly common. A burst of laughter from a nearby group of men made her glance over. Blue riders and greenriders and a couple of browns were sitting around talking. She had chosen that spot particularly because they were close to them. She glanced back at Angshel and allowed herself a bite of her fish while he answered.

The boy glanced at the distraction as well, before answering her. "I
love them! You just can't believe all the stuff we're studying! And
all the dragons! It's brilliant..I can't thank you enough for helping me
do that." He grinned at her and began separating some choice bits for
Jewel.

Briata shook her head. She didn't need thanks. In truth, there was nothing
to thank her for. Angshel had done the _hard_ part, gone to the
dragonhealer, stood and asked to apprentice. She had encouraged him, but he
had done the work. She was about to say more, but a shadow crossed over her
and she looked up to see the arrival of a rider.

Im're was walking past their table and at first he didn't pay any attention
to them. Just two crafters talking. Then something made him look the boy
more closely and he stopped. "Angshel? Do you have new knots?" he asked.

"Hello Im're!" the boy looked up, startled to see the nice rider. He glanced
over at his own shoulder knots, his pride and joy. "Yes, I'm a dragonhealer
now, can you imagine?" He moved over on his bench in case the blue rider
would like to sit down and join them.

Briata remained silent, eyes drifting between the two. Did Angshel know
him? Obviously. She hadn't realised he'd gotten to know anyone here. She
remembered her promise to Rhosyn and had taken it to heart, but now she was
wondering if there was truly any need. Angshel seemed to greet him heartily
enough.

"That's great news, congratulations!" Im're was sincerely happy for the
drudge boy.

"Cheers. Do you know Briata?" The boy indicated to the girl and her gold
flit across the table from himself.

"Heard of her, but we never actually crossed path's before. Nice to meet you
Briata," Im're replied and smiled at the young woman.

Of course he'd heard of her. Who hadn't? Only those new to the Weyr and
they would probably hear of her in due time. Briata allowed a small glimmer
of a smile to appear briefly on her lips. "Hello Im're. A pleasure to meet
you."

"Hello," Im're said and sat down.

Angshel had watched the exchange with a bit of nervousness. "Oh, and this
is Jewel," he added, pointing to the flit.

"Hello, Jewel. Is she yours?" Im're asked and let the flit sniff his
fingers.

"I wish! No, she's Briata's." The boy gave her his scraps and smiled at the
beautiful creature. He did wish for a gold flit but knew that would
never happen.

"Oh. She's lovely," Im're gave the little queen a gentle scratching.

Jewel crooned happily, pressing her head into the dragonrider's hand.
"Thank you." Briata smiled a little. Jewel did enjoy attention.
"I...didn't realise you had met many people here, Angshel." She commented,
though there was a hint of pleasure. It was good for him to meet others, to
help him heal.

"Yeah, well back when I was still a drudge, I sort of got caught cleaning
Im're's weyr and we just got to talking...and I got to meet Gormth." The boy
grinned and shrugged his shoulders at her. "He's really beautiful, Gormth
is."

"Gormth likes you," Im're said.

"Gormth likes him?" Briata smiled a little, her eyes settling upon Angshel.
"Perhaps that is a sign you should Stand."

"Gormth is no searchdragon," Im're cautioned. "Although Angshel would make a
good rider," he grinned.

The boy looked at the two of them like they were mad. "Me? A Rider? What
have you two been drinking?"

"Angshel, I'm quite serious." Briata's voice was quiet as she spoke to her
friend, but intense in the sincerity it possessed. "I think you should
Stand."

"But..." He stared at her, open mouthed. "But how..what would...do I do
it?"

"You're a resident of the Weyr now." Briata pointed out, eyes holding
Angshel in their precious gaze. "And part of the dragonhealers. All you
must do is ask the Weyrwoman."

"Yeah, but...Me? Are you serious? Do you think she would let me? What do
you think, Im're?" Angshel would so love to Stand but..

"I say go for it. Isn't it required for dragonhealer apprentices to Stand?"
Im're asked.

"Well...yes...but I just assumed I'd go no further than
apprentice level...." The boy looked completely confused. "Me?
Stand?! Do you
think...?" Of course they thought, why else would they have brought it up?
But him? On the sands? His whole body felt like beaming in joy at that one
thought.

Im're thought that if anybody deserved to Impress, it was Angshel. He was so
modest.

"I think you should." Briata stated in way of encouragement. "And I don't
see why the Weyrwoman would refuse you. She's a bit blunt, but nice, so you
needn't fear going to her."

"Yes, she is a kind woman...really? Me?" He'd do it today! His face
threatened to split in half, his smile was so big.

"Yes, you," Im're encouraged him.

"Perhaps you should go tonight." Briata didn't want him to think too
long about the idea. Angshel might start doubting himself if he did
and never ask at all.
"Speak to the Weyrwoman and let her know you wish to stand. The
sooner, the better."

"Okay, I think I will." She was right, do it now. Do it before he
lost the courage to do so.
